Hi Everyone, New Stuff In Back.

welcome to the boards, and the sketchbook section :)
That first rendering is awesome! I think you did a great job on it.
Everything is looking pretty neat, then I got down to your watercolor <3 ... just started trying to learn to use them and loved to see what you've done, it gives me somewhere to shoot for, I'd wondered how they lent themselves to portraiture... seen some pretty nice stuff online and love yours here in the sketchbook.
Can't wait to see more from you, especially sketche... seeing the artist mind in process is something I will never take for granted so keep posting :) and welcome.
*edit* oh and i'm so sorry about losing artwork, its something thats unique, special and irreplacable (sp?), I hope you never have to go through that again, good luck

oh question ~!
What are you using to draw first on what you will watercolor? graphite pencil lightly, water color pencil, or something else? or transferring it on? or... I'm interested and curious, they look great.

Hi Marie, thanks for the comments :)
I start my watercolors off with very light (3H) pencil outlines and then build up my colors - transparent to dark and sometimes opaque. Thats it. :) I thought about using watercolor pencils - I may try them out when I start my next painting.

Nice work. I really like the first image and your water colors are looking good. My only comment is that while your anatomy is pretty good on those pieces it is off on your "comic" work. Your comic style seems a little like Rob Liefeld (which isn't great). But it shows promise. Try injecting more of your traditional style into the comic drawings. I think you'll be happier with the results. Otherwise, great stuff. I really dig the half-finished watercolor of the girl that is "squatting" down, I really think it's your strongest piece of all of these. Keep up the good work! :)

Thanks for the crit. I'm trying to define myself artistically. I'm studying more and more traditional anatomy and hopefully I'll begin to become more organic in more approach - if that makes sense. BTW Rob was an early influence, but I'm trying to shake it ;-)

There's some pretty wickedly impressive stuff here. I agree with CRØW's critique on your comic book stuff, although some of it is better than others.
A few words about noses: I don't particularly like the strong convex line to define the side, like you use here:
http://www.edenswordproductionz.com/artwork/TheDestroyer.jpg
Now in that one, it's not too bad because it seems to go with the character's personality. But I think you want to be aware that a bold line like that is more of a character feature than a style feature, if that makes sense. I think it's less appropriate on the woman here, for example: http://www.edenswordproductionz.com/artwork/arabianbeauty.jpg. It conveys a sort of brute force and arrogance that not everyone posesses.
This one's my favorite: http://www.edenswordproductionz.com/artwork/chubw.jpg
Thanks for stopping by my book. Any chance of seeing some religiously drawn transformers here? :)

I'm been having a ball playing around with my wacom. I am now officially hooked on digital painting. I sketched a bunch of doodles for the last couple of days and I decided to take one of those doodles and attempt to paint a complete picture. All total about an 40 mins thus far. I may have to put this aside cause I'm moving down to Sarasota tomorrow and I need to finish packing, but I couldn't stop playing with this thing (wacom):^^: I love art :teeth: This is my first photoshop painting - work in progress :rendered:

dude!! i'm glad i stumpled on this. You have some really nice drawings. Some of your pencil drawings have such a cool photographic realism to them. specifically the drawing of the asian girl. Then you seem to switch it up to a comic like style for the character dudes.
Looks really good. I'll keep my eyes peeled for me updates!

Your stuff is getting better. You aren't lying. I would work on your perspective more in your pages (Don't be hard on yourself, mine is not up to par either.) Do the old school stuff like establishing a vanishing point and draw those lines to the vanishing point.
I am constantly tempted to skip it an go by eye, but it never works for me.
Keep up the good work. I will watch your progress.

Sorry to take so long in responding, I had to move (again). I'm still unpacking, but my computer and sketchpad were the first things out the box :) I'll finish my painting sometime this week, but I'll keep posting progression pics until done.
incolorinred, thanx for the kind words. I'll try to update as much as possible.
Zulle, Thanks you for boosting my confidence in my comic book style :rendered: . I don't look at honest critz given by other artist as haters though. I am and will always be into comics, but I am trying to increase my range and unfortunately lots of folks turn their nose up at comic art - with good reason sometimes. Comic book anatomy tends to be off. I'm trying to find a happy blend of traditional and fantasy. I'm glad you liked my unfinished painting. The sad things is it will never get done. A crazy women ripped it to shreds in an argument - needless to say we aren't together anymore, LOL!
-J-, thanx for big-up, but what ellipses are you referring too???
Metroeast, you are absolutely right about my perspective. I'm working hard to improve on that. I really want to get better.
BTW I checked out all of your sketchbooks and all of them had outstanding work. I'll try to stay on top of checking them out and leaving my 2 cents. :)

artmessiah...I'd like to see your portfolio that you sent in to Ringling. Maybe we can pinpoint what went wrong and we can fix that so that you're prepared the next time around. I know that Ringling doesn't like to see comic book sytes in there(unless you're like Alex Ross). They want to see your own style rather than you trying to imitate another. They also seem to frown on drawings that are drawn from photos.
Don't get discouraged though. I got rejected from SVA a year before I came to Ringling. Rejection only made me want to try harder. I improved and I applied to Ringling(since they're actually better than SVA and it's harder to get in) Now, I'm here in Ringling typing this out. Rejection is just a hurdle, you gotta get up and jump the next.

Great pencils! Really tight. Lovin' the sketch of the asian girl in your first update. Was that from life? I find that it is more dynamic than your later sketches of the self portrait and the baby. I guess because the later were based on actual photographs (which does diminish depth a great deal). Update more goodies, hope to see some more in color as well. Cheers!

The sketch of the boot looks great, as are the fruits. Theguy feeding the birds is good, but the gesture seems rather stiff, perhaps because of the shortened neck. My favourite out of the chain of updates has to be the old shaman woman though. Lots of character. Good stuff, dude.

Hey! Thanks for dropping by my SB! Lots of strong work in here. Your rendering is very very good! One crit though: When you're doing characters and most noteably faces, you have a tendency to skew them a bit... the far side isn't following form around the head. The old "flip the image" trick might do you wonders :)

Whoa, nice handling of light/shadow values, especially in your life sketches and watercolors. Good stuff with the details too.
One thing I'd like to mention is that the body and facial proportions of your characters in your first post stand out as rather inconsistent. artmessiah,
First, I like your work. There is a strength in your drawings that demonstrates that you're likely going to do lots of really great things in your future.
Be prepared. I'm going to be blunt, because I assume you wish to get work as a professional, and the only way to get there is to have direct criticism. Also, your work seems to be touching certain Quality Standard Buttons in me. So here goes...
There is a great contrast from your comics work to your life drawing work. I believe you greatly need to infuse as much of your life drawing sensibilities into your comics work as you possibly can. Your life drawings have a very nice fluid quality to them, in the sense that the figures (especially your gestures) feel more 'natural', or 'believable', because of this fluidity.
Your comics work, however, looks as if you've totally clenched your whole body (from head to toe) while you've been holding your pencil. It also looks as if you apply your pencil lines while holding your pencils with the Kung Fu Grip Of Death. Most every single thing you've drawn in your comics pages looks as if you've leaned your body weight into each line.
Part of the reason why, it seems, is that your stuff looks like you're trying to draw things like Rob Liefeld. This is a terrible idea. Rob Liefeld makes his living as someone who swipes from so many other people's compositions, outright tracing other people's work. His drawing is constantly re-hashed crap. He's been in the right place at the right time more often than not during his career, so he's been more lucky with his success, instead of getting by on solid good quality drawing ability.
Rob Liefeld simply cannot draw the paper bag that he can't draw his way out of, unless Arthur Adams drew it first.
I make this point to let you know that I can see that you're better than that. I can tell this because of your life drawings. You have the ability to actually DRAW, rather than simply to put a bunch of things that you've seen from various others' drawings into your own.
I see your influences in your drawings, and I see you have a good eye for what's strong and powerful. But, if you make every single thing (hair, skin, every part of a person's physique) into the MOST TAUT, MOST TENSE-LOOKING thing, then EVERYTHING will have this same look. Just like your comics work currently does.
You're applying the same TAUT TENSE sensibilities to skin, same as you do the stone floor in the 6th pic of post #1, which has the SAME HARSH sensibilites as the metal gun, as the body armor, as... well, the hair you draw has as many steroids in them as your figures seem to do.
Well, you get my point. You really need to vary up your application of line. Let soft and flowing hair LOOK like it's soft and flowing, as contrasted by the sharp treatment of slick body armor, as contrasted by the erratic texturing of a stone wall, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
Also, you REALLY need to start doing more and more complex perspective shots for your environments. In Rob Liefeld's whole career, you can still likely count on one hand the number of actual backgrounds that he's put into his comics panels. This does NOT include the basic first-grade level, diagramatically underdeveloped horizontal/vertical lines that he uses to "simulate" a background. This does not ALSO include the simplistic cookie-cutter way he draws scraggly triangles, trying to present them as (terribly drawn) mountains and/or trees. It's amazing how he's spent a whole career avoiding doing any actual quality drawing.
This is a very low standard to shoot for. You're much better than that.
I hope you try to pick and choose where you apply your more harsh unforgiving linework, and where you apply your more sensitive linework that makes the sexy things sexy, the powerful things powerful, and the variously textured items that actually LOOK like those various textures. Overall, your comics linework looks like all the same harsh line, making everything look very plastic. There's nothing really convincing in your comics work, as there is in your life drawing work.
And, I sincerely hope you put actual environments into your work. Not the Liefeld-like simple flat-on-flat walls that I'm seeing.
I know you can read this criticism as nothing but harsh, but it IS NOT. I promise you, Liefeld is one of so very few people who have been lucky enough to get away with such lazy crap work... please don't think you'll beat the odds to do the same.
If you don't change your drawing priorities now, this is where you're heading.

Looking good, dude. These figure drawings remind me that I need to go and take figure drawing classes again. @ Magnut,
Thank you for such an impassioned and honest critique of my work. Although the early Image Comics boys such as Rob Liefield, Jim Lee, and Todd McFarlene has had an influence on my comic style - trust me I am totally NOT going to forget my recent and better understanding of anatomy. I was, and perhaps still am a tiny fan of Liefield's grimmacing faces and aggressive lines - tho that comparison you showed me lets me know were his integrity lies. IMVHO I'm a better artist now than he was then, but I truly respect everyone’s art and vision; even his. I agree with you, my comic style can sometimes get stiff or static (to many unnecessary lines :) ). I'm experimenting now and trying to infuse my gesture energy and motion into my personal work as you said. It is really important for animation art to have life. I am slowly improving. Again thank you such an honest critique - I appreciate it.
@ lukavi,
Thanks for stopping by. I'm drawing perhaps more than I've done in a minute - mostly life stuff, but a ton of drawings and I think this is helping me relinquish control of my death grip ;) on my pencil and search for a more sensible line. BTW take a class or two, it's always good.

very impressive life drawings .. especially the one with the vase, perfume bottle and what looks like a can of hair spray, did a wonderful job of rendering the glass and reflective surfaces. As for comic art, John Buscema, Neal Adams, and Gil Kane are the ones to imitate :)
magnut
September 21st, 2006, 10:27 PM
OldNoobie is RIGHT!
Okay, maybe not imitate so much, but certainly to learn from.
Also good to learn from:
- Burne Hogarth (his Tarzan work is amazing, along with all his art books)
- Michael W. Kaluta
- Klaus Janson!! His work is among the most passionate there is. Klaus can get very eggagerated, and yet simultaneously show the most powerful things along with the most supple.
- Alex Toth: amazing use of graphic values!
- Jose Luis Garcia Lopez: One of the most underrated people of all time, yet he can draw rings around most people!
- Doug Braithwaite: consummate detail work on amazingly well drawn figures and environments!
I'm so very happy you're not one of the Liefeldian zombies. I look forward to your future work!
Good luck!

Beelow - thanks, I'll keep posting them.
Jeri - I think you are right - I might even try to do away with the lines all together with my next value study. That should help me define more constrast between light and shadow.
Magnut - I think you Oldnoobie and I are kindred spirits ;) I have all the Hogarth books as well as the Bridgman stuff - I learned a lot from both artist. Klaus Janson, Alex Toth, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez (who I like alot - his "Voodoo" comic series was tight), and Doug Braithwaite are artist I'm familiar with. They influence me as does Frank Frazzetta, Jae Lee, and Brom. I'll keep postin man and try new things artistically.
OldNoobie - You know my art teacher hated that drawing for whatever reason - he said it looked too flashy and artificial :( I now feel vindicated :teeth: Thanks for the advice bout the artist - If I would emulate anyone, the ones you mentioned would be the ones I'd go for. Thank you and take care.

I think the comic stuff is coming along, but it is a huge leap from your life-drawings to the comics you seem to love to do. I noticed in a lot of your earlier works the woman's breasts were spread WAY apart, though that seems to be coming away. I would like to address one specific (I don't mean to prattle), I think you need to work on hands. There are certain hand poses that look very convincing and powerful, and those that don't. Just try drawing your own hands in different poses to get it. Also, on the comic character, the hands seem small. Just a basic physiology thing is that to the human eye, large hands are more acceptable than small ones. If you don't believe me, look at Final Fantasy IX, Mikey Mouse, or even the WoW characters (dwarves have huge hands). I also suggest doing a lot of reading. Scott McCloud is a must, but there are a lot of books that show the conventions. And you need to know those so you can tell when you should/can break them.
Still, very cool work and I hope you stick with it. I graduated college and am still trying to break into the market. Takes a lot of dedication and time, but I am sure you know that already! See you around!

O.k. Back with Ink Gestures. Some are done with inkwash, some are done on plexiglass and the line ones are india ink on a twig - all were lotz of fun.

hehe cool to see an artist who knows how to use watercolour , the coloure dportrait of the woman with the girl and tlc girls are dope! about your minddrawings.. it´s good you have choosen to draw more from life , i would suggest after everylife drawing make even a small one of the same pose from your mind to really LEARN something "more" from it ;)
cheers buddy i liek your work

the first two images from your last post are GREAT. run that direction full speed. they're just haphazard and messy in all the right ways.
a lot of your comic work is pretty well done. snazzy neck tendons- that's always important. magnut pretty much covered anything else i'd say, i'm sure. heh.
looking forward to see where this thread goes.

Great life drawnings man! I don´t know why, but i like very much from the that boot in the first page. Would critique some things in the comics style like position of the head and anatomy, but i guess that magnut said it all.
Keep posting!
Cheers man!-

@ Zoio - Thanks for stopping by. I'll work on the comicbook stuff - I like my style, I just want to get a little looser with it.
@ sourgasm - Yeah I like working with this method. I have no control of the way the ink rolls on the plastic plate and the tools I use to draw on it are a mid size roller, mineral spirits, my fingers and a rag. There is no real control like I would have with a brush or pencil. I love the spontaneity of everything.
@ bradley - Thanks, I plan to.
@ GOBLINSHARK - Thanks for checking my stuff out. I haven't had time to really do a watercolor like I want to, but I plan of posting a few more. I draw stuff from my mind all the time - but most times it's too tight or compressed which is a result of learning to draw from comics first instead of life - Jim lee was a big influence, but even his stuff now is a lot looser. I'm taking life classes to loosen up so hopefully when I work on my own projects the lessons learned now will be carried over. Love you work man, I'll keep checking your development and direction.
@ OldNoobie - Yep still hard at work and loving it :)

Here's some more ink work. I really enjoy doing these - they give me such freedom. I like the quickness and fierce contrast. I will apply this method of dramatic contrasting light and shadows to my own imaginary stuff. These will be the last pieces like this for awhile cause my class is moving to the next method of figure drawing which is sculpting (woohoo!) :)

yo lookin at th elast ones i like your brushes i know u will be great with colours only by judging this! my crits for better development would be , well this would i do , .. first draw the lines of the bdies ( everybodygot its own FLOW, try to catch it witch lines wich would be coing out great for your minddrawings, and then after this i would put in the shadow. i hope you get wha ti mean trough my bad english. i´ll be coming more often cuz i see much potential here but u gotta work hard now!

Your latest stuff is looking really great! I envy that you can take full semester life drawing classes. I'd have taken them myself, but I'm unfortunately not 18 quite yet. :P Almost, but not within the right time period to pick up the class.
At any rate, all of your figure work is looking phenominal. Those twenty minute gestures up at the top of the page really blow me away. You're going to have an awesome body of work to choose from when it comes down to deciding your Ringling portfolio. Best of luck to you!

Alrighty here it is, my Ringling send off. I drew a lot more stuff than I'm posting here but I had to narrow it down. The other stuff I drew was more fantasy than observational so in the end I tossed them out. I hope this portfolio gets me through the doors.

Hey artmessiah (Bruce), I'm a total idiot for not visiting your sketchbook when you invited me a year ago - you were so gracious with your comments. I've missed out on a lot here. Going through it now I realize your talents will go a long way and I want to wish you well on your way to Ringlings. I have to admit your life drawing skills are fine and fluid, much of the comments regarding this are spot on. This piece here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=76215&stc=1&d=1168588830) seems out of place in the over grouping and to me doesn't reflect your best work. With composition and anatomy adjustments it could be a quite fine bit of art
And OldNoobie has a point - John Buscema, Neal Adams, and Gil Kane are great inspirations - they happen to mine.
Again sorry for the long delay in making this visit, it was a joy and I hope to see more soon. Man, I'm such an idiot!
Best,
Yeti (Tom)

Hey man, some real nice stuff here. About the proportion issues I mentioned earlier, I think you often make the lower leg too small. Like in these...

I don't know - I've always used just pencil and watcolors for traditional colored work, but the possibilities of digital work really intrigue me. Plus there is plenty inspiration here for me to try and get better at it
