First post! Yay!

I'm not really happy with it, but whatever. It's my idea of what would happen if birds could live underwater. I figure they could swim with their wings, and breathe through their ears (where the orange part is).
Machzero - ours are both specimen A :dur:

Nice!
machzero- nice use of perspective, 3 point even! and nice story telling too
Sheridan- nice simple layout and great idea. Allthough i feel a bit sad for the dead bird-fish. lol
Edit: finished work early and did more to it :D

BaronVonWink, I love the expression on that guy and the variety of types of feet he has.
Sheridan, I like the extra detail of the scales scattered on the dish. I also think the shiny feathery/scaly look is quite beautiful. I think the flatness of the background, though, overwhelms some of the detail within the fish bird. I think if you were to vary up some of the tones within the green (even just slightly) the piece as a whole would really come together.
Machzero, I agree with BaronVonWink in that you have a great story going on there.
Here's mine. I decided to go more with a cookie-tray than petrie dish. It took about 20 minutes to do. It could really use some sort of ground, I know. If I get some time, I may go back and noodle one in.

hi, I join the group
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/croes/parikar.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/croes/parasit.jpg
its a parasite that enters the human body through the anus. after that, it drains the body from its powers.
maybe not very inventive, but scary enough. think of it when you take a swim outside. oh, I see now that a tray is more like a flat container than a tank. I apologise my step away from the concept :x

This strange squid has evolved to look like a fish that has been cut open by humans - it even sprays a blood like ink. Small fish which come to eat this "corpse" are soon eaten themselves. How it avoids bigger fish is unknown.
painter hourish I think, more concentrated on drawing fish guts, which is why the story is lame ;)

Blast! Seems I had a similar idea, l.e.b! I like your colors, though.

Orm- Eugh... but the paint looks cool, at any rate.
Doyoobi Wrangler- "It's what's for dinner" Nice drawing, though I see you're having the same sort of scanner issues I am.
Sheridan- Actually, penguins swim using the same wing motions as their airborne relatives. They "fly" through the water. I like the bird a lot, though I second doyoobi about the background.
Nice work so far!

well, a couple random ones off my bookshelf-
One Million Tomorrows cover (Leo and Diane Dillon) (http://www.rocknrolljackets.com/cover2.jpg)
Tomorrow Times Seven cover (Robert Foster) (http://www.rocknrolljackets.com/cover1.jpg)
but the man for the psychadelic 60s cover illustrations is Richard Powers (http://www.strangewords.com/archive/ballantine2.html)

Sheridan - "A" just sounds about right, doesn't it? "specimen X464" loses some kick... heheh. As for specimen B, that's what the large attack submersible is for.
BaronVonWink - noted right after I posted that the 3rd point wasn't used for anything other than the trolley/tray. Thankfully, I kept most of the vertical lines on a seperate layer.
doyoobi wrangler - there's a story somewhere there... but i've no idea what it is. Just threw a bunch of cliches into it. heheh. Some designs were from an earlier DSG though.
l.e.b - rambo?? heheh... had the brain spasm to include a M60E on one of the background characters at one point. Stopped myself.

Pretty much skimped out on the shadow and tray, and didn't include the liquid I intended to have it floating in...

Hand! that is both revolting and compelling, it took me a minute to notice the human like face in the head area. so real looking....
how did you do that? what did you use? is it all digital? i am going to have nightmares from that one :) i happen to like nightmares, so its all good.
H!

William, that things is gorgeously revolting. Damn nice, the human head is very subtle, love how there seem to be human bones inside the jelly arms.

August 23rd, 2005, 03:47 PM
William, that's freakin' awesome! How long did you spend on it?
William b. Hand
August 23rd, 2005, 11:08 PM
BaronVonWink - Thanks! Yes, it is all digital... specifically all Photoshop. I used the airbrush tool with a hard edge and opacity in the 35% range... then some erasing... some shifts in colour... played around a bit with colour dodge and multiply... and, finally, wrapped things up with a little dodgey highlighting. :D
Floris Didden - :) Danké! Despite feeling shaky and confused about so many techniques and their practiceable application, I'm pretty comfortable with making things look gelatinous, he he... Glad you dig it!
Asoir - Thank you!
The Magnum - Thanks! I easily spent 3 hrs. on it... Definitely more time than i wanted to spend. I got hung up a lot trying to decide whether to use linear dodge vs. colour dodge... stuff like that, where you go back and forth for a moment... but that "moment" quickly turns into 10 min. here and 15 min. there. :nohope:
I'm shocked this one seems to have hit a chord with so many people... Thanks guys, the kudos are appreciated!

im working slowly on mine.
( digital noob )
is there deadlines for these ones?
i remmber seeing this topic beign new a couple of days ago and i guess it turned out ppl have to turn in entries in 1 day or something
William b. Hand
August 29th, 2005, 12:42 AM
manslaughter - Yup. This topic is one week old already.
The idea is to work on the current day's topic. If you are unable to post an image that day, it's fine to post it a little late...
... but try to hit it on that day, please.
Today's topic number was 853, and within three hours from now, it will be topic 854.
I'm glad when anyone's inspired to do a topic, but this random picking and choosing from old posts (and it's happening frequently) is driving me bonkers. ;)
As for your comment about working on yours slowly... well...
The idea here is to spend roughly 1 or 2 hours on each topic, and do it on the day of the topic. Ideally, it keeps you on your toes and nudges you to keep thinking and painting regularly. Although sometimes some of us get carried away and work a little longer, this isn't supposed to be some major project that you work on for days.

Sorry to hear about the file problems, manslaughter...
If you've already created the pic (and you get it working) you should go ahead and post it. Just apply my rant to future works, is all. ;)
