View Full Version : DSG 845: Sci-Fi: ROMAN GLADIATOR-INSPIRED ROBOTS DO BATTLE IN THE DIRT

[Well...]
[You don't really need a blurb for this one...]
[Do some Googley research (or pop in Ridley Scott's kickass movie) for some good reference, and really study some of this stuff...]
[Some fascinating designs they had.]
[Work improves with knowledge.]
[So, you got a blurb after all.]
[Now go draw!]

I really like the idea of the DSG, brilliant!
Here's my first, of hopefully many DSGs.. I kinda got lazy 1/2 way through and changed my style, so here it is!

Thought to be a great idea at the time, gladiator bots were built to provide safe entertainment for the masses. Unfortunetly, the masses prefer blood and illegal sports.
painter, pretty quick, I think 30ish

Maybe shading, later? Am I violating some unwritten rule by going back and finishing these? I worry about messing things up w/ shading.

great entries today
I kinda mind-blanked on the do battle and went for an after battle kind of thing.
I was going to make it alot dirtier and grittier and rustier, and I wanted so much dust to have settled on them that grass and flowers were growing on them
I failed. :(
oh well, next time. I did get good pose practice at least

charge - Nice dynamic perspective... great arm.
BaronVonWink - That is so friggin great. Love the dead battery one.
goran - Beautiful treatment on the upper, left side, bot. exactly what I was imagining when I penned the topic.
csteingart - number two! Hooray! :D
I'm in a weird funk wherein I'm constantly stymied about how i want to approach anything. Ugh.
I'll struggle through, and post, regardless.

My sincerest apologies for beeing so late ( I blame timezones). I had a lot of fun painting this one, but I learned a lot about how not to plan a scene like this. I just started drawing the big guy, no idea about the surrounding whatsoever. Ended up throwing a lot of dust around and doing one of the quickest (read: sloppiest) colour jobs ever. Like, 2,5 hrs.

Floris: It may have been quick, but it looks fantastic. Its difficult to tell about the composition though; its just slightly too big to get a view of the whole piece.
William: The foreground blurring is a nice touch. Very cool overall. I'm not so sure about the stars, though.
Grimlohk: The limbs in between the two robots get a little confused, but the overall idea still reads well. I like the clean robot design.
Antilight: I like the designs a lot, but the shading bothers me. I'm not entirely sure why- maybe not enough contrast, or not enough values represented on each part?
Csteingart: Great sense of motion in both of yours.
Simmi: Cool designs. I like the red bot's taunt.
Norringham: I really like the way you did the robots with sculpted plates of armor.
Mysterian: Looks great, though the nature of the speared robot's head sort of confuses me.
Goran: I like the second one best. Its more dynamic and I like the colors better (but that's just a matter of personal preference)
Myself: The front leg is too short, I think. The angle of the large 'mech might also be a little weird (gr argh)
BaronVonWink: Neat! The bisque tone works well.
Hamsta: Great movement in this one!

I've just spent the afternoon on the beach and came up with this.
I'm still working on it but I wanted to get it posted.
Great topic, most inspiring.

Sorry for posting late again, I finished the piece, but I didn't have web access. About 1 hr 15 min. Pencil drawing, inked, then colored in Photoshop. I would have liked to render in fully w/color, but I only had time to block out base colors. Plus a few FX were used.

Great job everybody! Floris...wow!

Phaethon The front leg is too short, I think. The angle of the large 'mech might also be a little weird (gr argh) :P
Pretty good use of variable line width in most places, but some wierdness in various areas - her right shoulder, her breast, right leg.
I think I told you this before - the composition is wierd, the two figures don't really interact with each other, and the chick bot dosen't interact with the background, might change with a shading attempt.
