View Full Version : Book project introduction

After doing various freelance jobs for a while now, I've been itching to start a personal project where I get to control the concept and the content of my images. So I decided to start a picture book project. It would be sort of like the Dinotopia series except the setting is sci-fi (of course!!!) .It might not be much of a story because I'm obviously not a writer.
The story takes place within an urban city in a distant future. It will be about the experiences of a traveler and his journey through this city. The book format will be the compilation of the traveler's diary/sketchbook. There will be over 100 paintings and sketches of this imaginary place in the "diary". Short paragraphs will accompany the images to give meaning and hopefully suggest an underlying story to this journey.
The reason for this lengthy introduction is because I need your help for me to finish it. Like most other artists, I get burst of inspiration to do a project then somewhere along the way, the juices run dry and it never gets done. I NEED a deadline and outside pressure to finish this book so that is where you come in. Please quote me on this :
From now on, I will post at least one new image here bi-weekly on Monday. If I ever miss a deadline, please email me and complain as a client would.
The only way I can finish this book is through guilt and shame :)

Sounds like an awesome project. I know exactly what you mean about inspiration running dry, when you have no real schedule to adhere to and your own stuff can just get dragged on until it's forgotten.
I'm applying myself in the same way, working on a project of my own, and yours sounds very cool.
I like the idea of the character making his own sketchbook based off his own observations. Sort of like a '1st person book'. I really look forward to seeing the bi-weekly entries, so keep at it!

Khang,
Excellent plan, I hope you can pull it off. If you want some help with publishing the book, we should talk. I've got 4 more books going right now with some very talented concept artists. The first of which is almost ready to go to print. It is called Monstruo, the art of Carlos Huante. It is all about creatures and characters. I am really encouraging as many concept artists as I can to do their own projects. The creative control and future benefits of having a block of your own work in a book form will be worth the lack of income and sleep while you put it together.
Best of luck.

I really needed that :) Right after I posted this thread, I though to myself "what the hell did I just do?, Putting another heavyload on my back during Art Center bootcamp?" But I need this pressure to get things done so thanks for all the encouragement and hopefully complaints if I start slacking off.

--- the sketchbook format will give me lots of room for experimentation of different style and layout. I want to make it feel like a scrapbook of a real place that I visited.

cool pics and great idea! can't wait to see more. your art is very inspiring!
i'm trying to do something similar, coming up with storylines to base pics/designs around to keep me inspired to draw more at home. i have tons of ideas, just need to draw more often!
how do you do it—freelance, art center, and now a book project? :)
art center is full time in itself!
keep up the good work.

My eye was drawn to the litte dude in the lower middle part of the pic. Though small I think it really adds to the scene.

these are some of your best works to date. i'm sure the pleasure of being able to work in an entirely unrestricted mindset is glorious. i'm definitely looking forward to the book, and whatever else develops out of it.
i've been a big fan of your work since i discovered digital painting some months ago now. i would be proud to contribute towards the literary element in any way you feel would help, from the interpretation of images into a storyline, through to proofreading. it would be an honour.
contact me at sometypeof101@hotmail.com if you're interested.
keep up the good work

Well... since you want crits so bad:
The 'marketplace' doesn't really seem that busy. I didn't really see any people in the painting, I just saw that big glass bubble. When I think sci-fi marketplace, I think Bladerunner. The chinatown markets in that movie are a good example of a rainy, busy, hot, sweaty, dirty, high-tech, gritty market.
And:
If you want to post a painting bi-weekly, and make about 100 paintings, it's gonna take 200 weeks to finish! That's almost four years! Their might be a flaw in my logic... ma englisj aint dat good.
Kudo's to you for your self-imposed discipline! Judging by your painting you have the skills to do it!

This project that you mention is the sort of format Comics should go to. I get so tired of those 2-3 word sentances inside speech bubbles that mean nothing...small talk. I would much rather see meaningful stories with accompanying illustrations.

Would love to see much more of this. Maybe if you can take a week out of your schedule you should just rep out as many pictures as you can. Get 7 or 8 or even more done. then take a 2 day break and go back to your normal routine. Looks great!

This is a cool concept! I'm really into Artists taking their own worlds and putting them into a cohesive form-- It's like a modern day explorer following in the footsteps of that guy who went in that bathesphere into the deep ocean...
Hm... as long as we're on the subject of artists and their books, what did you all think of Wayne Douglas Barlowe's work Expedition?
