View Full Version : DSG 844: Strange Scene: GROUP FINDS SCALEY "UNICORN' AMIDST MISTY FIELD OF EGGS

So... not a typical unicorn at all. "Unicorn" might only be loose description of this creature. I imagine that this could be as much Sci-Fi as it could be Fantasy.
The eggs could be very different from, say, the chicken egg. Maybe they're more like squid eggs, or something insect-like, or maybe something out of that old Dr. Suess book...
And then the group... Well, it might be a wizard and some elves, or it might be some modern-day spelunkers, or perhaps some spacesuit-wearin' folk.

The first humans to visit "Greenhouse" Paul G. Haman and Jean Du-Glacee, their primary objective was to collect tissue from the "unicorns," the largest of that planets living forms. here they can be seen in their rover, next to the lander.
painter, just under an hour I think.

Hey all, I dont know why but I was really inspired by this topic, I'm pretty sure it was the word 'spelunker' that did it. Anyways, waaay longer than my usual time frame, this one was 4 1/2 hours painting in photoshop. I pretty much got an image in my head straight away, so I was able just to paint it without thinking to much. Unfortunantly, while not thinking to much I made it not quite a field of eggs and my mist is pretty sparce. Anyway nice Toipic William B Hand, I had fun!!!

sweet pic matias!
...and i was JUST watchin aliens last night too!
my only crit would be that it could use a little more dynamic lighting
to emphasize the drama (maybe see less of the empty cave space in the top corners?)
of course, this wsa only a sketch...so take my crit lightly :perv:
my pic iz in the works....

Everyones pics look great!
So, I thought... What if the unicorn was in an egg and what if the field was upside down....(an hour and ten minutes)

This thing took me 3 hours. I tried to use photoshop but the lines always seem to end up looking jagged on the curves when you make a quick stroke. I ended up useing Alias Sketchbook Pro 2. It's super responsive but doesn't have any way to do textures which kinda sucks.

goran - Thats a great composition. I like how you framed the unicorn and your use of lighting is superb.
llothcat - Really awesome job. I'm loving the glow in there. Looks like something you would see in a high end comic book

Everybody's really creative with this one.
Props to Matias, Goran, and Trevor.
MattGamer, I'd like to see a fully rendered version!
Awesome stuff everybody!

Trevor: Very nice, great environment work
atomicsushi: Beatiful muted colors, and clean form. Both of them. But wheres the group :P
hsman77: Cool interpretation :)
DavePalumbo: Hah cool another oil painter, nice work :D
Goran: Cool brush work! that texture saves alot of work i bet.
Matias: Awesome. Alienesque :P
was suprised to see another oil painting. I did mine in 2 hours as well. This is my 4th oil painting ever, it was hard to do detail at such a small size. its 6"x6" wet on wet oils on masonite. The reflection on the paint made it hard to photograph :(

Here we go:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a44/Phaethon/Unicorn2.jpg
Remarkably like before, but now completely different.
Also...
Grimlohk: I'm really digging the oil painting. Nice work w/ the impasto, and the brush strokes describe the form of the "unicorn" really well. The guy on the far left bothers me, though. Too hard to read.
Trevor: Awesome. I didn't even notice the guy in the background the first time I looked. The red on the "unicorn" is a nice contrast. I'm not sure if pumping the red up or keeping it more subtle would have helped the piece. Maybe neither :)
Voraz: A bit difficult to read. I kept thinking the enitre animal was an emerging head, and the eggs feel a bit flat. Nice contrast w/ the red people vs. the green eggs, though.
Atomicsushi: I like the "cracked" feel of the creature, and the reflected light works well.
Goran: Wish I knew the name of that scratchy, line thing. It's really cool. Really nice, illustrative image.
Hamsta: Seems rather flat to me. The eggs have really strong highlights that pop right out, while the black creatures lack depth. Actually, the smallest one works the best as a sort of sillhouette in the distance.
SkyWookie: I like the clouds and the flying creatures a lot, but the foreground figures seem stiff.
And machzero, llothcat, matias, DavePalumbo, and hsman- all good pieces.

Phaethon I'm only gonna crit the newer version. I'm not feeling the composition - looks like three mostly unrelated subjects, I'd like to see more interaction (the guy on the right, looking at the unicorn is a start.)
Alot of the shading strokes seem meaningless, a clearer light source would have been better.
Watch your tangents, the mouth overlapping the neck makes some confusing shapes; the hands; the roman guy and the background.
Talking about the BG - I don't get it... trees? fire? ripping paper?
MattGamer I like your borders, although a bit thick, shouldn't have tried to fill them in. The unicorns is well done in general, especially the head, but some details are lost in the shading lines which are too random, and don't really follow form as they should.
The little men have some proprotion and posing problems
