Hi All!
This is the first time i've gathered the courage to start a sketchbook. What i'm looking for is some good C&C on where i could improve. Thanks in advance!

ah very nice... definately be watching this one. Well done all around, though your hands dont seem to be up to the level of everything else. I especially like the ones where you're added dark and light tones... making me want to get a sketchbook with mid-tone paper. Please, baby, don't stop.

Ferg & Kie: You spotted my little hand problem then? (not that i have little hands, but have a little problem with them.......you know what i mean :bashful: )
It's the same with feet, and i know i should push myself to sketch them more.
xXMizu_NinjaXx: Just paper and pencils, and photoshop for colours. That's going to change hopefully as i've just got my first Wacom. Hard to get used to!

Nice work, love the clean style! Only thing I would have to say is to really pay attention to details in your anatomy, especially the faces. Hands and feet can be somewhat "stylized" but facial anatomy has to be dead on and it seems to be a little off in some of the sketches. But that's what a sketchbook is for, right?!? To work out all that stuff and learn!
Great work though, very nice!

Thanks again for the kind words everyone!
Smeagol71: The hands and feet issue is just laziness on my part to be honest and something i'm hoping that this sketchbook will help me get past.
Anyway, here's one more:

let me know what i can do to improve the colouring as i'm still a bit of a beginner in that respect.

Hiya mull77,
I don't think I'm going against the grain to much here. I just wanted to say nice stuff man. I know you asked for crits but I find it hard to post any judgements on sketchbooks because after all they are the practice pages people are doing to get better. Unless I see a mistake or something like that being done over and over again then I don't feel I should say anything negetive. I don't see that in you sketches. They are quite good. Everything is done well that I can see and I'm always wanting to see more.
I feel more at ease critting stuff in the finished art section. At least there I know it's considered completed.
There are so many talented artists here although I'd like to ,just can't get around to them all.
Your stuff is pretty sweat mull77. I will be peeking in often.

This is a great sketchbook! I love it :) I can see you have good imagination and good skills. I don't think I could be any help since you're way better than me. I could learn a thing or two from a guy like you :)
I'll keep an eye on your sketchbook :bashful:

Thanks for the drop by in my SB,, It lead me here......hehe
It is a great thing that you decided to start an SB,,,,,It really helps you to get a feel for the way your work is received. You will find out a lot of things about your stuff that you yourself were missing, not out of a lack of skill or imagination,,but due to how close you are to your work,,,,,other people see things that can help you because they have the critical distance,,,,with that, you know you are on your way when you take the step to show your work to a community of artists... I have had the best help and support here at ca, so many people have led me to great refference material and inspiration.
About the work you were kind enough to share.
You have loads of imagination and a strong, clean graphic style, I am very fond....... I really like where you have taken the time to tone or color a drawing to a finished polish. You also have a fine sense of taste, which is invaluable, really. Love your draws of mecha and body armour, solid.
I will now attempt to give helpful advice and crits about anything I can think of....
1. Digital coloring and digital painting,,,the big difference. I really like your color work, it is so clean and believable. You may want to experiment more though.... If you were to tackle the idea of color earlier in your creative process, you could do more or less with the graphic kind of linework you utilize without it dictating the picture.....A good way to do that is to use bigger brushes,,,paint entirely on the machine, try to avoid details, and go for a more grounded feel, by that I mean paint everything including the BG and the atmosphere, you know?
2. The drawing,,,,,I think it is rare for a person to be so sure of what they are about to draw as it appears you are. All of the things you depict are so readable, you defineitly see it all in your head before you put most of it down........That is a huge bonus as an artist, believe me,,( I never know what the hell I am doing)
The thing is this,,,If you have this gift you should abuse it in the best way,,,by that I mean really to let your hand fly around... When you are defining forms like you do in the armour, you could get a lot more expedient and less neat and it might only look better for it.. Really consider giving it a try, okay? Draw with the whole arm and try drawing multiple lines to describe a single line or edge.
3. Draw more scenes, fully worked up enviros around your pepe's and really think about getting incredibly comfy with the idea of aligning and balancing full figures on their feet in the kind of poses you want to see. Also, you should think about drawing people from behind and from the rear three quarter view,, it is good practice and it keeps you out of the details in a serious way.....
4. Draw more ethnic varriants, draw some really ugly people draw babies and children,,,,,more animal anatomy etc..
I could go on and on,,,but I will just drop in periodically with smaller bits of commentary,,
cheers!!! keep up the awesome shit.

That has got to be the best (and certainly the longest) crit i have even gotten. And coming from some one as talented as yourself well..... :D
I've decided to take your points one at a time and work on them until i can show some improvement.
1-3. Use bigger brushes, do more scenes.
I suppse you can tell that i like my stuff to be neat and tidy, but they can end up looking a bit stilted and undynamic. I've just started to try and break away from this (but it's HARD!)
The lack of big scenes is part laziness and part fear of screwing up. I can honestly count the number of finished scenes i've done on one hand :[
Ok, so here's my first attempt:
http://www.pawprinthq.com/Gallery/colour/art/waroftw.jpg
As you might be able to tell, it's a little War of the Worlds homage. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out but i'd really appreciate crits about how it could be improved. As i've not done many full peices so the composition is probalbly a bit weak and i'm not sure if it look too washed out.
Oh, and most of the time i don't have a clue what i'm going to draw either so you're not alone there!

You really have some CONCEPTART here!
Everything looks quite unique and has clean design information, if you know what I mean. Everyone of these pieces look like a final concept for 3d model croup to start working on. :P As some others here, I would also throw some crits about facial anatomy, but you have heard that allready haven't you. You handle great variety of subjects on your drawings. Creatures, robots and human characters all look very good.
I really really like your style. Keep up clean work!

This thread is quite nice, man! I really am enjoying all of the digital works you've got here. I blow so hard with my Intuos it's crazy. I think I just lack patience for some reason. I just can't get the results I want out of I suppose. So many people (you included!) make it look so freakin' easy. I hate you. :er: :) Just kiddin'.
I do love your pencil work as well. It's defiantely a style of your own. That much is certain. But I'd like to see you render these out a bit more too! I do really enjoy seeing the variety of subjects in there tho. You've got a bit of everything. From creatures to robots to hot chicks, you name it! Keep it up! I'll be lookin' out for an update!

These are some great character designs. Page after page of unique characters, it's really inspring to see. In particular, I like your humanoid-style aliens, the Star Wars type of creatures, such as the alien with the gas mask. It's all really great. Only crit is the disparity in the quality of the hands vs the rest of your work. Everything else is solid, so keep up the good work and practice those hands.

ZebzFree: Thanks dude. Don't get downhearted about your tablet though. The only reason i'm anywhere near the standard i am (and looking at the rest of these sketchbooks, it ain't so great) is that i've read all of the tutorials and got every scrap of info passed on by the guys way better than me.
Anyway, you've got some good skills!

Sweet designs. Try not to use 100% black in your paintings. Think of your darks ( on a scale from 0 black to 100 light) as 8 or 5 at 30 or 40 saturation. Red cloth would be like 70 or 80 percent saturation in the shadow, and the accents have color in them. Just don't ever use pure black because that creates a black Hole in your pIcture that SUCKsss all possible hope of achieving good readable values. Try using the HSB slider if you use photoshop.

Mull, nice mix of works you have here. The style you've got going is working for you. If I can offer one crit though, I noticed in some of your sketches that you tend to outline things. It flattens the work and takes away from the volume and mass that's actually there. But other then that, good work!

It's a flash animation that i did to help out a friend who goes to uni. The title was 'daredevil'. I've not done a lot of animation, so this was quite a tough project for me and the time limit was very tight.

Great hands, except the middle finger on the middle hand. Looks like it's missing its knuckle.
is that squid thing in love with the woman?

mull,
your improvement is just awesome,,, as if you were not good enough already......... I particularly like the way you are distilling information more and more,,,,, simplifying and stylizing the shadows..... There is more of a feel of design to all your work now, even, (and esp) with the fast bw studies..... keep up the hand studies,,,,,,and the loose bigbrush scenes in color,,, and the graphite work,,,,, sheesh,, you are on with so may approaches....
cheers.

nice work here man. the last picture, the lower arm/hand area needs work, maybe have the angle lower and the wrist bent, in or out depending on the pose you go with; if he's hitching his belt up, bend in. if resting his hand on his hip, bend out. wrists are barely ever straight, as far as ive seen. the kimono lady, its less the shoulders then really the way you drew the collar: one side you gave it texture, but the other side you didnt so it looks really flat and not like she's wearing it, more like its just hanging up in front of her on a wire or something. anyway, keep up the good work, more stuff plz. peace.

Gorgeous use of colour. I'm loving your portrait pictures, especially that one with the 4 heads in a row and the black guy in the middle. Really nice skin tone study. That dark angel one is dead cool too, really eerie! Can't really find much to critique, but it would be nice to see a few more full body poses.

Looking good mate, unmistakably yours in a good way :).
I would however experiment with throwing some reflected or back lighting on some of your subjects and see how you like that, it might help flesh them out just a little. You don't have to go over board, just hint at the form a little maybe?
The one you posted on Dec7th has really great colors, I love it.

It's going to be a little while yet before i can put anything new up. My house is in the proccess of being gutted (new electrics, new heating:$ etc) and my PC's been in bits for the last few months.

OK! As i've mentioned before i've been all over the place for the last couple of months and i've fallen behind on pretty much everthing, especially this sketchbook but i'm looking to put that right starting now!
So...even though there's been a big gap, i won't have improved much (if at all) so it's pretty much back to square one for me so all you your crits and hints would go down a treat as usual.

Digging the off-beat colors as always man, storing your idea's here away for later use. On the first two however - I would have liked to see you tweak the warm and cool a little more, go colder than you might think you should and warmer than perhaps you think you should, I dunno. It seems when you end up near white things feel cold.
Peace dude.

Hey my first time popping in on your sketchbook and very nice stuff here man Really nice stuff going on here. You really like drawing heads which is awesome. Your concepts are good as well. My only crit is keep working, good stuff here. Cannot wait to see some more of your work. One more thing your sketch book is really clean and consistent do you have any gesture type work? Like loose drawings? That would be nice to see.
mull77
April 27th, 2006, 06:21 AM
ashrumm: Dunno why, but i don't do too many quick sketches/gestures. I know it would definately help my stuff, but i always end up overcomplicating them. Basically if something looks unfinished, then i think i should go the whole hog on it before i show anyone. Stupid i know (especially as this is a SKETCHbook).
iolarnula & Heart_x_Slayer: Thanks guys!
Jorge Regula: Hey man, welcome to the forums! Heh, thanks, but my pics are a LONG way from being flawless. Just have a look at some of the other sketchbooks around here and you see what i mean. There are some great artists around here.
Apathy: How you doing fella? Yeh, was on HK for a couple of weeks for a holiday. Just blown away by the place...the buildings, the people, the nightlife, all brilliant. Was there for the New Year as well, so i got to see all of the celebrations.
I know what you mean about the colours though(i bow to you superior colour knowlwdge :) ) ....i seem to always stay in the same middle ground until i've finished a piece and then i have to go back and amend the hue/saturation. I should really sort it all out before i start, but i always seem to go for the muted colours first. Meh.
Those first two are pretty crap anyway.
I've put the following in new media coloring book if you fancy a blast.

Asoir: Thanks for dropping by. Well the inked ones are fairly old, so hopefully i should be doing better stuff now. Most of the latest stuff i've done isn't exactly polished though...just quick sketches.
Decided i was going to try to do some enviroments last night, cos i'm crap at them basically. I have trouble on a couple of things, mainly the focus and perspective. Anyway, i saw a thread the other day (i can't remember whos unfortunatley) that some one had done, and they'd mapped out a rough perspective outline in 3d before they started. The final peice looked really nice, so i thought i'd give it a try.
381634
It's not finished yet, but i'm pretty happy with it so far. I'm probably going to have some zombies or something coming out of the fog, or being partialy obscured by it.
I'm not sure about the colour though. Too much blue maybe??
I'd appreciate any help on this one :)

Looking very good man, some great thoughts on using color. I do think perhaps, you might enjoy with pushing that so much further. Having everything near in value works rather well for these - which is odd because value is usually so vital. Some good thoughts in here dude, making me think. This is actually where a lot of my thoughts have been lately, very cool to actually see them :)
Anyways, because a picture is worth a thousand words, this is what I mean by pushing it a little. I.e. let your "shallow" value scale yet extremely detailed and well colored style accent a contrasting high value focus perhaps? (Words are horrible!, pictures now)

I do try and play with the values and the saturation of the stuff i'm doing, but i find it hard to get the balance i want.
I've something to upload tomorrow that i did last night (forgot to upload it today) that i had a fair bit of trouble with.......i'll need you to cast your colour-attuned eyes over it!
Like the 2 versions you did.....the second one especially. The first is a little over-saturated for my tastes....but is it over-saturated, or is it just me??? Arrgghh! :(
Now i need a lie down :)
[edit] Had a little play with the last one.....i don't have my tablet with me at the moment so i can't get into the details, but do you think it looks any better?
Idiot Apathy
June 6th, 2006, 04:54 PM
Yeah, looks good. My edits were pretty cheap things, no substitute for actually painting them. I think to restate my point on these is, that with your well detailed and great feeling backgrounds etc, you can really really make your subject pop with just a little contrast. You know what I mean? Can't wait to see more mate. Cheers.

I may still have to up the values on this one.....it looks totally different on my monitor at home...maybe that's the root of the problem! I'll blame my tools! :)

Going for a higher contrast look straight away on this one. It's not even half done yet, but i think it's going in the right direction.

Hey man, nice to see some talent up in the Northeast, I'm liking your characters and your droids/mechs are nicely designed and proportioned. I recon you could apply some of that design sense on an enviromental level.;)
My advice would be to focus on getting a solid hold on perspective. It will give all your design work more depth. The use of 3D to lay it out is a good tool but its far better if you can set it up yourself. I would generally only use 3D if I was attempting an extreme 3 point which can be really tough to eyeball.
Great work though, keep it up

Icaro: Cheers man! Yeh the North East's pretty cool for most things but i do feel a little stranded up here sometimes when everyone else is meeting up in london.
I've always had a bit of trouble with enviroments.....dunno why but i can't seem to visualise before i start, so they always end up looking a bit flat. I know the 3d is a bit of a route to nowhere, but i was just clutching at straws. I've always loved figure drawing, and the enviroment came secondary to that for me. It's defiatley something i need to work on though...even if it's just starting off with small thumbs and working my way up.
enthombed: Thanks dude! Come back soon :D
I've had a lot of trouble lately with saturation and values on the stuff i've been doing, and like any good workman i blamed my tools (ie, my monitor) but it turns out that it was knackered! So i've changed quite a few of the old pics that i did on it and re-uploaded them so hopefully some of the stuff that previously looked washed out now looks ok.

Awesome, these last few paintings are shithot, the Blue bot duder and the wome n with that red stuff on her forehead are my favorites, that monster thing rocks hard too!
I wouldnt say no to seeing some brighter neon blues behind the women though but thats just me, works as is! I really like that bot, his pose is great... and like thats such a dull comment but i cant think of anything else to say.
That last environment seems to be working but its a bit straight on (meaning er, you dont get much chance to see the other goins on like you did in those 3d ones.. i make so little sense), if anything... are you pleased with it? looks nice either way.
Those last quickies, did you do them all digitally or are they inked scans from your sketchbook, theyre ... "nice", fucks sake, ill go learn or something so i can say something more constructive.
Keep at it~

381715
Glad you liked the other two. The blue bot i'm mostly happy with, but the enviroment is flat and crap...and the other enviroment is pretty awful as well, but i'm trying to get into the habit of using different textured brushes like Apathy (http://www.pawprinthq.com/Gallery/pencil/art/sketches13.jpg) does.
I want to start doing more enviromnets but i'm getting happier with the way some of the colour work i've done with figure is turning out and i want to keep at it while i'm motivated.

Gorgeous! Bloody gorgeous. I'm facinated at how you made these work so well and so vibrantly with just a few colors, and even with a pure white enviroment. Very cool, and giving me a few ideas for sure. Other than that the texture on them is really great.
Speedy enviroment has some nice things going for it, good colors and textures for sure. Composition is a bit static perhaps - maybe try off centering things a bit? Seems to be divided into almost perfect thirds.

Now i have no excuse (damn it)
Lord Dubu: Thanks dude. I'm using the 3d as a bit of crutch at the minute, but i'm hoping to get past needing it for perspective. I read somewhere that it's usually pretty difficult for someone who's used to doing figure drawings to make the switch to landscapes and that's defo the case with me.

Cruising through your SB. Really good stuff. Your design sense is obviously well developed. There is only thing I can say that would strengthen your work (because your work IS strong). I think it would benefit your already fine work to study up on human anatomy. I'm wanting to see the planes of the faces on your humans more clearly defined. They have definate types and character but your drawings will be much more powerful when you can build the form from the inside out. The creatures and mechs have solid structures built into there fun designs and sit in solid space, so this dosn't seem a big step for you. Just that in comparison the figures are needing the same kind of attention IMO. Your design skills and imagination are impressive. I will be looking forward to future posts of your creations. I really really love the critters.

Been lax again with this sketchbook, but i've got a bit of free time at the mo, so hopefully i'll be able to update pretty regularly.
AztcFireFlower : Thanks dude....you're right about my figures and faces, and you're not the first to say it either, so i should have sorted it by now!
Apathy: Cheers tom...mechs arent really streching myself though. Gonna have to apply some of the stuff i've learn recently to these.

I came in here the other day to see if i had missed any activity, alas i hadnt missed much. However its nice to see youre about again!
(I normally only reply when you/sb person has replied recently, otherwise i feel like it might get missed ;( )
Anyway, hi2u, i love the material youve got going on in that bot thats in your last update, it looks really sort of liquidy/shiney/rubbery... tis nice.
Not quiet so keen on this update though, the highlights around the face are looking a bit bland and it all just seems a bit flat. That being said it looks like a WIP so youre probably aware of that :P
Looking forward to more!

The knight was a learning experience for me....just speedpainting really and i was going for a sillouetted effect with very little front light, but if you think it's too dark then i'll amend it.

Sweet sketches and concepts, mostly ace stuff, but there are some rare technical issues that are difficult to crit because of their subtlety, like the weirdness of that chicks face you mentioned. One thing I can point out is that flatness occurs sometimes http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21131&d=1157761218, the way his feet are flat against the ground like there's no perspective. Other than that, good work.

your stuff looks better and better.Professionan presentation, nice ideas, good use of reference and all but it misses smething imho. Some dirt probably, everything looks very clean. For example, the first in post 187 looks great, nice comp, nice subject. But maybe it needs some more texture, some more realistic feel about material. And, it misses IMHO a strong focal point, that could have been there if there was a stonger contrast (any kind of contrast) and maybe a stronger feel of light, that would have helped a lot to give a stronger feeling of volume. The figure is backli it seems, but it doesn't look as if it is.You should work more on that illo, looks very good IMHO.
To cut it short, imho your work needs more textures, more graphic elements, stonger contrast, stronger light. But you could add al this very easily IMHO, so keep it up!

you have very nice work here !
but i notice something that carries through in nearly all of it - there is an unnaturalness (is that a word? lol) to some of the figures, and i'm just going to attribute it to some of the weird outlining and lack of reference/studies

Very cool TD piece too...could have used a more xtreme worm eye's view perspective to really give the sense of scale, but at least you've added the building so that should work alright.Nice colour contast, but maybe the snake /trident dude could have a more dynamc snake body...just random thouhts ;)
hehehe i'm sure the baby will enjoy the giraffe too :D
keep sharing!

Awesome sketches lately. That Thunderdome pic will take you far in the competition. I'm not a big fan of outlines but your sketches are making me change my mind. I can only agree what Dan wrote :) Good job!
What's the old man to the left doing in this picture? http://www.pawprinthq.com/gallery/colour/art/market(1.5).jpg

Haha, yeh, he's nicking oranges. For some reason that's what people seem to pick up on with that pic. That and the ninja anyway :)

Awesome! You're like George Perez with the 20+ faces on one page!
I love the picture with the fight in what looks like a Turkish market. Was the reference Istanbul?
