darkos: hope you don't mind: "Always use the biggest brush possible. Then put it aside and pick the one two sizes bigger." :) Using a brush that's too small (I do it too often..) we're setting ourselves up to loose structure and wasting time dabbling around mindlessly when we should be thinking about what exactly we're trying to get with each brushstroke.
Also - I'm sure by coincidence - it looks as if her hair is about to catch fire :]

stefd - great studies, i specially like the one with red lines at the bottom! expressive..
mark malone - great! maybe the coloring is too "plastic" looking... but it's a good start.
dakros - i love the boldini study... i like the mood and strong contrasts a lot.. I think your whitaker copy has some work to do keep on posting.
dorian - thanks for all those tips!

Copy#1 Kind of old, I posted it about a month ago in my SB, but I'm reposting here so you can check it out & crit if you want. It took me a while to do this one (about 6-7 hours), and didn't do it in one sitting, but in the span of a month.

Copy #2 I did it today, in about 4 hours. Please crit & tell me what you think. If you want to see a bigger version of this one, check out my SB.

All done in PS.

I love copying old masters! Its a great way to learn:)

1 - Sargent study - less than 10 hours i think
2 - Rembrandt - 3-4 hrs
3 - Greuze - 2-3 hrs

I hope you can give me some adivice and crits! :)

Sargent study. The time taken was about 2 hours.
I was trying to treat the face as having planes at first but it was quite hard to see how the shadows described the shape so in the end I just ended up trying to get the tonal relationships right.

The only thing I can see is that her left eye is a bit too small, and the shadow under it is a bit lighter than it is in the ref and the general eye shape could use some tweaks- thats all I see. Great work :]

Thanks Almighty Christ! That left eye gave me a lot of grief. Her nose is too long as well, but I decided not to cut and paste since it's more interesting to note that mistake in the future. :)

Hi guys, I have a Question,

Im looking for da vinci figure drawings, head drawings, anatomical drawings etc... to copy from but i cant seem to find a book (similar to the dover series) that only have the illustrations. The only ones i can find are those thick $60 books with glossy pages and giving emphasis to text. On google, the quality isnt always great.

Can anyone recommend a practical da vinci book to draw from or website?

BTW this is the master drawing i copied in my first year of SVA.

gringo, looks pretty good!
there are some shape issues in the overall gesture (mostly position of hips relative to the rest) although the smaller stuff looks good, shape-wise
also the cast shadow on the wall is quite a bit too wide, I know it's not the main element but I think it's good training to be diligent about every part when doing a copy
values seem decent, a few things are slightly off here and there, lower legs, ground plane, bottom right of bg, hand, bg to the right of chest area, etc.)

for shapes/proportions, I found what really helps is looking for and checking these two things:

big angles (such as shoulder to hip on right outside of the body)
horizontal & vertical alignments

small thing I'd probably change is the very digital smooth look it has right now by just adding some texture with noisy brushes or the noise filter

looking good overall, keep it up! :)

This was a painting I had to do for school, it is the first time I have ever attempted a portrait in anything but oils. It's a Rembrandt study, which I felt I done ok on, but I managed to make some of the colour a little too dark, and a few other things are wrong, but I am happy for a first attempt. Oh well, it's all about learning :)

Hey dorian!
Thanks for the comment.. I wish I had seen it sooner.. it would've helped me a bit in my next copies. I try to be as diligent as possible in my studies, but I also try to make it as fast as possible. I have to find a good balance between the two I guess. About the "digitalness" of it, I try not to hide the appearance of digital too much, so people can see the "medium" I used.

Here are the rest (and last) of the copies I have don ein the past month and a half (so far). It feels fantastic to keep on making them! Next up is a Bonnat study.. color.. a painting of an old man. Digital as well. I'll keep you regulars of this thread informed.

I just finished reading a book about the girl with the pearl earring, and I remembered I had done this a while back. It's close, but not satifactory. The human face can be a bit difficult for me. I think to the contrast is too high in the photo as the end of her nose has washed out and dissappeared.

Ooh, awesome thread. Here are some master copies of mine, all are from the last 3 weeks. The grissailles were much shorter paintings for class, the Velazquez I did on my own. Not entirely pleased with it, I'll have to redo it sometime in the future. The drawings are all copies of plates from the Academie Julian.

Mine? I'd love to, but the best I could do is start again (it was damaged, and I had to cut it down a lot to repair... so I just got rid of it to a relative) - which I could do, but I am working on other things now. I have another master study I am doing that I will be finishing soon though.

How can I have missed this thread?! Learning from the masters is something I just loove.
Am currently working on a Rembrandt study in color pencil. Will of course join in as soon as it's finished. :)

Any particular strategies you guys use to make master studies as valuable as possible by the way?

EDIT: Just remembered - can always post my latest Frazetta study meanwhile. Done in pencil some weeks ago, main purpose to learn more about male anatomy and how he applies shade:

I already posted this in my sketchbook, but hadn't found this thread yet. I've been told for years that I needed to loosen my work up, and have had real trouble with it. I figure it doesn't get much looser than Frazetta. The end result could use work, but is still a vast improvement, IMO.

I have a very long string of progress images, but I'm not sure what the etiquette for posting them is, as this isn't a thread of my own. Is it acceptable to post something that's going to take up most of a page? Greg: Very interesting process with the grids. Thanks for sharing all the steps!

at all: I hope to see more master copies which are "reduced to pencil". Mastering the form in pencil is in my humble opinion much harder / more difficult than describing shapes and shadows with different colours. I did also some Frazetta pieces in my Sketchbook, but I am levels away and I'm looking forward to achieve your's in a few ... (?) years. :) Keep on posting, guys and girls!

Interesting - my trouble is in doing it in color and with light and shade - line is far easier, as is black and white.

This study of Courbet is about 2 years old, just before a hiatus from studying under Jon Lockard, a portrait painter and muralist who had mentored me for 5 years previous. For our final semester he assigned me to to work on this master copy for the month remaining to the class. I'd never worked so concentrated for so long on one painting, an amazing experience. I worked soft pastel on velvet grey Strathmore charcoal paper, 19"x25".

I guess I should come and ask you if you meet the requirements? They will hire you, like any other job would be based on your skills if you meet the requirements and are able to do the job. It is impossible to know how much you want a competition unless you ask the company itself. I always assume that competition is huge it motivates me to do my best.

Hey Ator,

Great to see you are copying from the same source material as myself. Good try on the Gericault foreshortening one as its a difficult study, but it looks like some angles are off. I would check that left arm again and try to match it with Gericault's. I do however get a good underlying sense of the structure in all these drawings, which I needed more of in my messy Pontormo study. I'm learning more and more that you have to be a real natzi with perspective and structure in order to draw like a Renaissance artist

By the way, where does that last study come from? Is it a Rubens?

Ator
December 26th, 2010, 10:19 PM
thanks Spivak! I liked your pontormo copy, it possessed the movement and vibrancy of the original, and the form looked great. and hey, Pontormo strikes me as a pretty messy draftsman himself! I just found a nice pontormo that I'm copying as I write this, Its proving tough but enjoyable...the figure has about six nipples because he corrected the forms so many times! i will double check the gericault. I'd actually like to try it again, i feel there is probably a lot more I could have accomplished with it. The last copy is one I just started this afternoon, it is a Rubens, his copy after the Laocoon. My first copies were really slow, but I find that I'm beginning to hammer through them more and more rapidly with some new techniques. I'll try to update here regularly.

I found that Cennini quotation in the book Artists on Art. much of the selections there from his writings struck me as timelessly pertinent and attractively objective, very much a mainspring of artistic practice. I'll be on the look out for the complete book.

@mcarmbk, that looks very good. Only thing I notice is around the bust it seems to have gotten darker than the original. Keep it up.

Wow, what a beautiful thread!
QT_Melon: your Sargent is just perfection itself. I wish I had a 'Sargent brush', you don't seem to need one!

Here are some of the studies I did recently. Incredibly insightful!

A Bouguereau - 'Êtude Tete de Jeune Fille', a J. S. Sargent - 'Tramp', and a Winterhalter - ' 'Princess of Wales' (which I am still working on), [UPDATE] and a Roka (not sure what the name is, he did a lot of these)

Best of luck and inspiration to all of you,

Ana

This is my first master copy attempt and first post here. I've been lurking for awhile. I'm not done, just wanted to get some feedback since I've done the face and I'm not totally happy with it, but not sure why.

In case you dont know it masters studies week. There are a lot of studies being posted in this thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=3429051&postcount=3714). Come on and try.
Here are two studies I completed in the past few months. Both are copies of Abram Arkhipovs works.

So here's my latest master copy. It's after Edouard Manet's "The Balcony" (detail), 1868-69, Oil on canvas, Musee d'Orsay.

I used pastel and then a bit of acrylic to blue out the background. I was also interested in Betty Edwards' color assignment that has you using only complementary colors plus black/white. So I tried using mostly green and red for that reason.

Crits? Comments?

PS: can someone help me figure out how to resize my attachment? sryz...
