View Full Version : I'm new and awe-struck, but here is my art dump

well, i'll start by saying i'm 17 and have been semi-seriously working on art for about 2 years now. i've always felt somewhat successful and last year won best in show by a juried school show, but i must say that i am absolutely shocked by the abundance of extremely talented and prolific artists. it certainly is humbling. because of my personal discomfort with the quality of my own work, i am posting them here instead of the finished section (if any would be better recieved there, plese let me know), but i still ask that you still be honest and blunt, if necessary, in both your specific critiques and overall impressions. i'm just trying to "keep the quality of the site up," i believe was the phrase.

to get to the point, i'm asking for what you think of both my art (specifically and generally) and of me. anything you have to say would be greatly appreciated. i'm going into my senior year and will be taking airbrush and portfolio prep classes, but after that my future is uncertain. i'd like to go to a four year school (hopefully unc or nyu) but am unclear on whether or not i should pursue my aspirations in art or stick to another one of my "strengths." i've been in close contact with a friend of my great aunt's who is the head of the art prgram at queens college (in charlotte, NC) graduates of rizd and a few other art programs at four year schools, but they have all seemed to flowery to trust on the issue. now, we all know the internet is the best place for brutal honesty, so have at me.

these are the bulk of my better works and are traditionally done in colored pencil, marker, scratchboard, graphite, or charcoal/ conte, and, lastly, acryllic and oil paints, as i'm thoroughly ignorant, unfortunately, of digital mediums. i'll try to present them chronologically in order of completion. sorry the pictures aren't the best.

my first major wholly original work. free from any photo-refs. this won the school art show (about 1000 entries) but i really can't stand it. (the attention was nice, though haha).

the following three pieces are photo ref'd and my first time using markers. i, obviously, focused the series on hands.

and now what we've all been waiting for, the self portraits of super fine me. in all seriousness, i'm not sick, i just color like a moron. this is from real life observation and imagination in colored pencil. supposed to look like my face in water.

my first painting. acryllics, had to illustrate a song so i chose the lonsesome death of hattie carroll.

my second oil painting (first one is a still life of fruit and is currently unavailable if you were wondering). still life.

self-portait number who knows, oil painting number 3. from real life. i know it's derivative; i guess i'm trying to "find myself" by stealing other people's styles.

current WIP a still life of a floral print hat of mine where the flowers (they didn't come out quite right, but i've tested the paper's patience to it's limits) coming to life in the light. in pencil.

i think that's all of them. i bow before the mighty wisdom of the internet. i'll pre-emptively say that i know my current biggest concern is to drastically increase my output of both sketches and finished works.

edit: just to clarify this is the "beginner's helpful critiques" section where those who would not be considerred "intermediate or professional level" should post, correct? i try to read and pay attention to rules, so i hope i did this correctly.

Welcome to conceptart.org!

You have some really strong pieces here. I espescially like that piano marker one.

I dont really have any crits. Most (if not all) of these are finished pieces, and it shows that you spent alot of time and effort on these. It would be completely appropriate to start a thread in the "its finally finished" section of the forums. You dont have to be a professional to post there, just dont post quick scribbles or unfinished pieces.

Keep it up!

if you want a crit...just made your faces as good as your hands and you'll have down two of the most expressive parts of the body
