this is a 67x92 inch oil on canvas painting i've been working on this week. i finished the block in this morning. it took six days to complete. it was kind of daunting as i've never attempted a stretched canvas painting of this scale, but it was a fun exercise in the end. i didi the composite in photoshop, the lettering was done by hand, then laid on top in ps. i then printed it, projected it (safety net), and painted it true to the reference. i wanted to post this so maybe i could get some feedback before its completion. i probably have a week of dry time ahead of me, so i'll be steady tweaking it before i lay the final glazes down. hope you like...-c36

MADNESS!! :-)
The surrealism really "sings." I'm too much of a sucker for immediacy in my media, so getting that level of realism in the grafitti guy in a week is quite a feat in my eyes!
Gorgeous work, El Coro!

Dude, that is f'cking great!!!
Not to be the only one with a crit here, but a small one if you don't mind: The slivers of blue and white you're using to crop his face with seem a little harsh. It makes his face a little difficult for me to look at. But that could just be me!
Thanks for sharing; you just lit a fire under my ass to pick up my brushes again. :)

thanks everybody. it feels really good to get this kind of positive feedback. this was definitely not an easy one, and i'm glad its been well recieved. this forum is a great test audience, and i feel alot better about this one now.
Keyth/Manley/cucaracha: thanks guys. your opinions mean alot to me...
Atomik: i too usually require immediacy, thats what made this one so hard for me, i think. it was frustrating, because it seemed no matter how hard i attacked it, there seemed to be 10 times the blank space...the grafitti guy i did this morning, probably 2-3 hours...
lono: i work toward tie off points. it goes against the basic rules of blocking in, but i find it much easier to work this way. i just hook up my painting machine and....:)
Deth jester: thanks. i had to sit atop a six foot ladder for 3 days to do the top. not fun at all. well kind of fun.
Tedsuo: i'm planning on running a glazed band of color around the figure to better rest him into the piece. really subtle, but it makes a big difference. i deliberated on the color around the face, but ultimately decided brighter was better. hopefully i can resolve it during the glazing stage...
Garden_Gnome! Wake up! and thank you.
Coma/ davi/ speeDFX: thank you guys. i'm glad you like it...
Foster: coming from you, shit, i'm speechless :)

man...
that is so great.
when seeing the scale photo, i imagine this piece hanging in a quite coldly designed living room. white, high walls. no round things, everything's sterile and edgy. black leather sofa, acrylic glass table and a big window front spanning across one or two entire walls of the room.
all walls are clear of things, just this painting in the middle of the largest spot of blank white.
that'd be it.

Damn dude great piece man, excellent idea execution and colors. A technical question do you project or use grid, or are you so skilled you can free hand that shiot bro? no matter sweet.

Great piece! What I like even more than the execution of the picture - that is amazing as most of the stuff I know from you - I really like this surrealistic idea, the mixture of townscape and mural. You´re breathing this, don´t you?
Thanks for showing the progress!

Wow. I've been impressed by your work for a while now, and this piece only proves that your kung-fu is strong indeed. I went to this poshy art show last night and was sickened at how much crap can spew out of people's mouths when you have enough bad paintings hanging on the walls, and expensive wine being handed out. I'd rather be looking at stuff like this.

March 29th, 2003, 11:05 AM
wow, thats really out of this world. I love the realism that you capture so well! great job coro!!!!
I am working in acrylics right now, but want to do oils. I guess I am just afraid to try, cuz I don't know what brand is good for oils.
a week drying time? did u use any drying medium?
and what do you prime your canvas with? that brown color I mean.
el coro
March 29th, 2003, 01:55 PM
thanks again everybody.
Targete: thanks man. i projected this one though. i probably could have winged it on the background and character, but there's no way i could have done the lettering. i was way too intimidated to attempt that without a safety net. big canvases scare me.
eli: holbein, gamblin and old holannd all the way...no dry medium, usually after a week, they are dry to the touch and glazes can be applied. i usually use galkyd for glazing. the under painting is part gesso, part modeling paste, part acrylic paint, applied with a coarse bristle brush for some surface texture...
i'm stoked to get such a response from this... i think i'll be showing this piece at a group show in may at 111 minna gallery in SF. anyone out in the bay area should come chack it out. it promises to be a pretty good show, 17 artists in all, some of the other artists that will be showing are: Ron English, Sam Flores, Nate Van Dyke, and others... kind of a juxtapozie crowd, but i dont show too much these days(real job), and i look forward to showing with some old friends....

wow, thanks coro man!!!! I spoke to you before and you said to peep you out next time I am in sf, and I was just there last friday and didnt call, now I wish that I did... ah well, I am definetly going to that show in may... do you have a date for it yet? let us all know... I will surely be there and I would love to meet up with you next time I am in sf... I am there a lot but have just not wanted to bother you.
thanks again... I think I will make that transition to oils soon... I am getting frustrated with acrylics.. they are cool, but I just want to get into oils, they look so much better.
awesome work, awesome responses thanks!!!

Oh man, don't temp us poor art students to spend our rent money on a trip to SF to see your incredible skills. That is going to be one hell of a show. Maybe I'll come across alot of money and be able to go.
That painting is so fantastic. I can't even express it’s greatness in words.

mr kaufman-
I am stoked because your subject and execution is fresh, and it encourages me to really explore a finer side of copmuter graphic art. I studied art history very little while at school, and I begin to kick myself more and more as my artistic mind grows. This is a refreshing piece, and I think you should paint more of them, especially with this size of canvas. Please use us as test audience, we are all eager to see things of this magnitude.
thnx for sharing, and I hope the peeps in SanFran take it in such a positive manner we do here. I bet the actual peice speaks bigger in person than it does here in this "minature- web-pic" state.

wow. awesome. pretty good eye direction with the graffiti shapes. flows well around the canvas
one crit is that the green arrow on the lower left, the way it is now.... leads the eye out of the canvas especially since it is already in a corner.
you might want to redirect it somewhere else...or mute it down.

thanks again y'all.
jaymz: yeah, one of these days, eh...what about you?
WerxOne: i started bombing back in 91-92, back in el paso, texas. i started pieceing in 93, with CTS crew, and i've done it off and on ever since. you cant ever forget where you came from, you know? i still try to get out at least once a month, but i only do legals now. i'm pushing 30, and it gets embarassing explaining yourself to a cop as to why you have a desk job and still find the need to go deface public property..but if i'm drunk in public and have a marker or something, i'll still get down. i paint with ICP crew outta frisco now.
Jekki: you know i thought about that, but i just had to put an arrow in there somewhere. i'll probably glaze it back a bit... thanks.
and to everyone else, thanks! any doubts i had about showing this thing are now gone, i think...you always hate your own work, in a way, i guess.-c36

Just wanted to contgratulate you man! that is a really nice piece. I started about a monthe ago working with oils, and even though it's fun, it is really hard. well, just like anything new I guess!:p
Any tips you could send this way would be highly appreciated, I'm currently painting in my figure painting class. any suggestions for at home projects?
Other than that! Excellent job! The different perspectives you gave to the roof remind me of M.C Esher's work.
Truly inspiring!

This is so amazing. In the detail I love the mark you have on the cars especially. I usually do the figure first in a painting while you saved it for last, was there a reason for that? well great great work.

I am not worthy.
It's.... it's... painfull and... marvelous. I just came home, had a couple of beers, logged on to conceptart.org and clicked. I think I studied your photo's for twenty minutes or somethin'. Is the guy in the painting the picture or the painter? Does the artist paint the picture or does the picture paint the artist?
It shows that you put a lot of yourself in the painting. I could never do that.
Damn.
el coro
April 4th, 2003, 04:53 PM
thanks again...
Cannibal80: deep. the title is "and let the world be your canvas", i think theres a symbiosis between picture and painter...thank you for your kind words. its hard to put alot of yourself in a painting, but sometimes you've got to take that chance. that keeps it interesting.
balo: i saved the figure for last the same way you eat dessert at the end of a meal...its always better to get your licks on and establish a direction before you paint the figure, although i'm guilty of the opposite alot as well. i think another contributer was that i almost always work from top left to bottom right. i'm getting quirky in my old age...
Don Wilkinson: i had to paint in patches. i treated it as six mini paintings as opposed to one big one. again, with age comes idiosyncrocities... :)
JOSHUATHEJAMES: thanks
Lost: i'll show you HUGE....i'll be up to your office later...(oops i meant to private message that) :)
