View Full Version : DSG 832: Surreal Scene: FISH SWIM THROUGH THE AIR, ATTRACTING INTEREST OF CATS

I think this is nice...

fish are cool, swimming through air is fascinating, and cats being interested in those air-swimming fish is both amusing and truthful.

Surreal Scene: FISH SWIM THROUGH THE AIR, ATTRACTING INTEREST OF CATS

[sorry for late... so tired tonight... fell asleep unexpectedly...]
.
[awoke from dream where I couldn't understand how it was that I'd just walked through the walls of my house, and Tom Cruise was there saying:"Exceptions! It's the exceptions that we usually ignore!" and I had to agree with him that this walking through walls recquired an acknowledgement that might unseat some fundamental suppositions I had about the universe.]
.
[of course... now I understand it's just because I was dreaming...
... but he had me goin' there for a minute.]
.
[...and, 'though I'm doubtful that the crazed ramblings of a goofy old sci-fi author have much to do with revealing some hitherto unknown history of human experience, I have to say there was something haunting about the dream.]
.
[So, think of these air-swimming fish as just such an "exception".]
.
[That way, this convenient (if slightly forced) tie-in to my bizarre nocturnal ramblings will make them seem almost pertinent.]
.
[Danke]

Real quick sketch in painter, felt like keeping it very simple and using all that implied garbage. The topic is a lovely concept, I will probably redoodle it again and again and again...

Just goes to show: even being a talking kitty with a cool bell-hat and a best friend who's a flying/semi-mechanical whale-fish thing can get boring.
... say, isn't that an old Chinese Proberb? Well, it oughta be.

Good topic. On a side note, I hope I can keep up with this for more than a couple days this time..

It's been 3 years since the aerial migration started, and people started getting used to the idea that every year fish will start flying through their streets from the ocean to their river breeding grounds.
The cats however, are still confused about the prospect and most prefer to watch from safety.
painter, 45ish I'm guessing, refs used

asbestoshazard ~ that is very interesting. i like it a lot. that would really look good put on canvas and on a wall.

Ads ~ Cool character you have there. Im not sure if i like it taken so literally. Those are still swimming fish, not flying ;)

Dookymobile 3000 ~ haha this is pretty sweet. i like how it really is a sketch. It looks quick like u need to get the idea down. the fish is really cool lookin.

Hamsta ~ good to see your still at it. Your getting better !! i can totally tell your practicing is paying off.

Tunguska ~ The fish are like air bombers! i like the curious cats.

hellqvist ~ using references is great, you get better. but you have so much detail on the 2 subjects but no background :x

goran ~ cat looks pissed!

SirSushi ~ Cool concept, this could so be used in a kids book.

DV8 ~ this made me think of wings. you should give the fish big ass wings.

Nottingham - neet style. is that illustrator?

Kaylon - no that isnt something you see everyday :D cool pic

I'm way too sleepy to be drawing...pencil, about 1 hr 15 min while watching TV, started to dose off once I got to the cat.

3 difference kitty reactions... first one: the cat jumps to attack the fishies, the second one: the cats just kind of watch wondering what on earth is going on, and the third: a cat got in way over his head trying to attack a fish and ended up going on a scary ride through town!

I really like your idea sirsushi, wish I would've thought of that! That's definitely what cat pirates would go after! ;)

Sunny - Just wanted to say that I think that the masscrit-thing you do is great. Everyone really appreciates getting something said about their images, especially us rather new members of the DSG. So please keep that up! =)

As for my image I want to blame it on my teachers, I study informative illustration.. they have pounded the emphasis of focusing on the important elements in an image =). Actally considered using a background but couldnt come up with anything good.. any ideas?

joemomma95 This looks like you used magic wand to color a pencil sketch - not something you'd want. Looks like you only used ref for the goldfish lineart, but slacked on the colors. At least you didn't use a gradient fill on the bg ;)
The cat to our left looks more like a big cat (tiger, lion) as opposed to the house cat on our right.

I also started with two days in a row :D this topic makes 333 days in a row (minus 2-3 days when I had no net, but I made up for it)
I still have the horrors of those days to look back to, you will to if you keep going.

Sunny Very nice, lot's of style to this one (and a little cheese :) )
I looks familiar in a way, style wise, most likely it can be traced back to your influence, but don't let me worry you about that.
Tiger looks a little too skinny to me, the tiger's tail looks like a leash for the cat, I'd move it and the "mustaches" on the fish bother me.
I think the pink highlights on the tiger are too much, composition works well enough, and I'm sorry that my crits are so scattered :P

Hamsta, let me start out by saying thanks for the crit, my first one and it will be remembered. I don't quite know what you mean by used the magic wand to color? I sketched it out, scanned it and used the airbrush(in PS) to color in the lines...although I didn't look at the reference pic in order to color, I just went with what looks right, and now that I look at it again, the colors don't look right, to dark and bland.

And yes I used reference on the cats too but I see what you mean on the size difference.....I guess I'll start my learning here and keep trying. I really do want to keep up with these it'll get me back into the practice that I so desperately need, I'm gonna try to quit smoking today and I think this is a great alternative to when I start getting those cravings, so look foward to more from me, hopefully every day.

Thanks again for the crit!!
