Diego!!! Finally man! you had me waiting forever! :D
Some of the images didn't show the first time, I had to hit refresh several times, maybe it's my browser or conection but check your hosting just in case.
I think you are getting a good grasp on form! The expressions are also looking nice. What I think you could do is push the values some more, the darks, darker, and the lights, lighter. What I definatly want to see you try is some tonal compositions too. For example in the first head of the head studies, the bearded guy (5th pic), the construction and anatomy look good. But look at the background, its white, and a large part of the head is also white. I think this makes it look a little flat. Maybe if you made the background a bit darker, there would be more contrast between figure & background, and it would pop the head out more, or you could make the head darker, instead of using the white of the paper for the light, you could use a light grey. That way you would also be using tonal composition. The same for a few other images, try using whites only for extreme highlights or speculars, and the light planes rendered with light gray or any other tone. The idea is to use different tones for the figure than for the background, like if the background is dark grey, use white, light gray and black for the figure. I think using the least amout of tones sometimes can be good. Anyways take all this with a grain of salt please!
I like how you included studies from several things, but also concepts. Good pen studies.
Cheers man I wanna see more stuff!

bRØk3n_sPiRiT / Cheers Martin, thanks for waiting... I aprecciate the crits, you're right about the contrast in my pics, it's poor, the values are not reading well, i will pay attention to that kind of things. Thanks for taking the time. ;)

Hey Diego - this sketchbook is looking really nice so far. I see you are experimenting with different ways to render forms, and that's great. Some work better than others, but you only know by trying.
I'll be back soon!

You're obviously very good at drawing what you see, but your doodles have great anatomy as well. If your not looking at anything for reference when drawing them, that's really impressive. I can't believe you are doing those studies with just a ball point pen. What size of paper are you doing them on? Is that some special pen, or just an old Bic? Great cross-stitching. Keep Posting.

I can tell by your focus and the way that you approach your studies that you will go far <> keep them coming <> think as you drink it in <> why does that contour change shape etc.
<> one thing you will find working from the masters is that they made some anatomical mistakes but their drawings skills are so strong you never really notice unless you are looking for them. Lots of strange proportion things going on as well <> point betng that accuracy is not what makes a great drawing <> to much attention to accuracy can distroy one however so try to keep a balance.

Ramon / how's things going? thanks for checkin'.
Fellah. / Thanks dude. Love your stuf
Medium Pace / Thanks for the comments dude, that's really flattering, about the anatomy i have a really long way to go, my doodles always lacks of dinamics, very static gestures.
Concerning the pen, nothing special or fancy, just a fine point ball-pen i use for taking notes in class. I've tried lots of pens.
Paper-cheap a4 pad and a4 cut in the middle and bounded for my little book.
Mentler / Hey doc, i find very interesting what you're saying, sometimes i find myself listenin some music while drawing and not thinking about what i'm doing, seeing those little details that defines a really good drawing, like how variating the weight of the line you can model the shape.
It's good to have you drop by. Thanks for the comments.
Here's some sketches i did for a sculpture project.

Diego this stuff is really nice, man! You have pretty good line quality ususally, better than me anyhow. The faces and studies are all really great! I like how you draw your faces too, btw. The only crit I really have is that you might want to work on how you render the form. Sometimes it's really rough and it just seems flat. Remember you're sculpting on paper. Try and look at how some of the great artists on this board render, like Wes... try and discover their secrets. >:D Then suck 'em dry! Keep it up, tho! You've got a great start!!

Diego those structures are looking very nice, you're getting better with each new batch of pages. The skulls some pages back looked good too. The faces are looking more expressive.

Gracias por contestar en mi thread!

Good head studies and everything else. For rendering and shading try a blending stump and a kneaded eraser, it really speeds up the process. Graphite looks good with ball point pens too. How did you do/plan out the pen sketches for your sculpture project, is that based on industrial design or something? I have no idea how to do that sort of thing.

Hello, Diego. Was enjoying your book and thinking about your skills. I think you are very observant because some of the portraits have this uninterrupted daily life feeling. That's great because to catch very subtle casual expression of person's face is very hard. So I like it in your work very much. I find your anatomy studies very interesting and useful to me, so I'll be back to you thread again. About this colored drawing which you yourself scolded so harshly - I like very much. It's made in the impressionistic manner (like Edouard Manet. The Fifer).

diego, very good material here. my suggestions: mix it up some more. i see a lot of contour drawings with rendering on top. try different approaches: gesture drawing, creating volume with blunt tools like charcoal, or conte, or pastels. i think the pencil is great, but exploring other media may have you thinking in terms other than cross hatching and line. you may want to try relaxing your line. to me it seems very technical and literal, and limited in expression. look to more than just the academic/figurative art school. too often, your line seems like a means to an end(model, block in values, define form). too much of your reference material is other artwork. try using more photographs and working from life. when you work from drawings, in particular, your job is kind of done for you. you see what it takes to do a similar drawing. with a photo or life model, you have to define that form. good luck.

Good studies! The lines look very clean and defined, the gestures are looking cool and the proportions are good. And you did those while taking notes? You bastard! haha : P Seriously, good lines, mine look really chaotic when I sketch : S
The imaginative stuff is looking good, I especially like the first figure on the second page, with the horn helmet. The proportions look good and the design looks interesting, the only crit is that his hand may be a little too small. Personally I'd like to see that guy in some more poses, some more dynamic.
Also I'd like to see more renders of your imaginative works. You are doing great.

good studies going on here. I can tell youre learning a lot. I think the only thing you should work on is the poses of your imaginative figures. You put a lot of jazzy armor and sci fi widgets on em but they are basically in stiff boring poses. Just work on making some good dynamic figures, once you can do that jazzing them up is easy.

Hi man - the designs looks really cool - even though they are a bit hard too see you make the line work pop in the right places which is not easy. I would love to see a fully rendered foour hour pencil drawing of one of those bots. Hehe i know you think rendering is boring  Always good stuff man and getting sweeter with every post.

Cool updates Diego...Good to see you putting all those anatomical and figure studies to work. That stuff is great to do, but it really pays off when you apply it to some of the more creative stuff..which I see you are doing now!
Suggestion...try doing just ONE character from imagination...but really put some time into it, and render it as you would one of your portrait studies. I'd love to see some of these sketches you've been doing fully rendered with your pencil technique....could be killer!

Diego, I love your drawings man. Keep it up! I understand how hard it is coloring with a mouse. I did 3 or 4 pices with them. Took me 5 to ten hours on them. And still they didn't come linke I wanted them to. At least it was an optical mouse. There no way I could've done it with a tracking ball. Anyways your drawing still rocks.

Hey Diego, your imaginative sketches are looking good and more dynamic, and those last studies of the chair-thing (banquito, I dont know how to say it in english) the lamp and clothing look great, but I want to see the full-rendered piece! ; P hehe.
Also I'd like to see some full-finished pieces.
Keep up the good work, and I mean that!

Hey Diego - if you don't mind me asking..why do you hate these so much?
I feel they are good studies, -moreso the top one. I'm guessing it's just an armor study...and i think it's successful at that. It might help just to have an outline of the shape of the figure that would wear the armor, but otherwise it's a clear sketch.
keep going...you have mad skills... and it's okay to drink and smoke a little..you're a young dude!

I must say that the stuff that stuck out to me were your studies a couple posts back, like the faces and stuff. They're really, really nice. The last one is nice too but I can't quite make out the designs what they are completely, probably because their not completed... but their interesting. Hey, Diego, Very elegant work, as always. I just would like you to add quantity. Quality is superb :)! If it's not too much trouble could you please describe me your process of drawing , how do you start, do you put some marks on paper first to help your orientation. I'm just extremely fond of your manner to draw. And you did the coloring in Photoshop just in line with your style, unpretentious, restrained, delicate and beautiful. I just want you draw like 20 drawings more. Sveta Dudetta

Hey Diego,
Trying to come up with a crit for these last pages is a challenge. These last pages are awesome, and I seriously mean that. The studies show a very good line, and the studies of the figures with clothes look great. Very natural and relaxed poses. Keep up the rendering on the concept, or show us more rendering : )
The only crit that I was gonna make is that the concept figure with the dark background looks a bit tilted to the left. But since the proportions are correct, it doesn't really look like an issue. If it was intentional, maybe you could tilt the shoulders and the hip more, so that it doesn't look too stiff.
Good face studies and of everyday objects.
Cheers and keep it up.

masterpug / Yeah you're right about the joints, i did those without too much thinking. I will do more of these and try to make it work. Thanks for the input
Gloominati / thanks man for the kind words and for the support. Cheers.
sve / hey svetta, thanks for the words. About my way of drawing, nothing complex, sometimes i start from the head, and oval shape, then put the clavicles and add some lines for the torso, then put more lines to give it perspective. Always with soft lines, then when i have a solid block in I choose the lines i like the most. Then add more volume tru the lines. That's all.
I try to work very light because i always tend to smear the page so to avoid that i make some clean lines. Hope it helps. Cheers.

I know its a little late to say it, but I looked at the cloth.jpg again and the lamp looks a bit asymmetrical at the base, the curves that form it are not the same the left and right.
The rest of the images are looking cool, the anatomies especially, and the faces too. I like the lighting on them.
I don't know if you've tried this, if not, give it a try. Draw something on paper, lines and tones, until you finish it and have a grayscale image. After you scan that, in photoshop set the brush mode to "color", and paint the color on the same layer as the tonal drawing (remember to set the mode to RGB). You can duplicate the layer and hide it, so you have an unaltered version just in case. Apparently, what it does is add color to the drawing without altering the tones, its a quick way to paint something in photoshop using a mouse, if you have the tones established. Anyway, see if it works out or not.
Looking forward for more stuff.
EDIT: here is what I was talking about with the color brush thing, I tried making a quick painting of one of the faces. Nevermind the crappy painting... its just to show that you can paint something quickly without altering the tones underneath. Well, in this case, I did alter some stuff, darkening and such. But I used mainly multiply, soft light, color, and normal modes, and thats it. You just have to experiment.

Hope it helps at least for showing what I was talking about.

Wow Diego, these last charachters are awesome!!!!
But its not the layer mode set to color, its the brush mode, and the values in grey have to be more or less established, and you paint the colors on the same layer as the grey values (though it probably gives similar results using a color layer instead of brush). You have to use the other modes too depending on what you want, normal, multiply, soft light, etc.
Keep it up man this last batch is awesome!!

Here's some crits for the last one: the two hands are not grasping the objects convincingly. The bottom of the pole in her right hand looks like it should be swung to the right, because that's the way her fingers are positioned right now. For the left arm just think what it would be like to carry that huge object over your shoulder, you would want the elbow pointing forward and the hand in more of a fist, so there would be a gap between her hand and the shoulder ( should roughly make a triangle).
Diego
October 14th, 2005, 02:51 PM
Yeah man, you're abosolutly right, i'm not confident doing hands at the moment so i did what i could to try to solve that.
About the left arm, it was no my intention that the left hand carries the big gun, i wanted that the gun was like a backpack or something like that.and she was only grabbing the leaves or whatever it is called... I don't know if that makes sense or not.
Cheers, and thanks for the crit. :)

I think one of the best things that helps me do poses is to physically get up and emulate what I want to draw. It really helps you figure out the extremes of body movement. For instance, can you actually touch your wrist on your shoulder? :)

Oh My God, Diego, You are on a roll. So productive and such a beautiful drawings, one after another. And a very new manner to draw too. Those different bumps, circles, dots add so much interest :). It's great for to see you delivering so much and so tasty art. I'm very happy for you! :) My favorites are a grave digger (or robber) and the monster. I like his heavy paws and the strange snout of his :). Actually I like your design for sketch trade too. Royal lines, once again :).Now I would like to see some strange woman coming from your pen :). May I? :bashful:

Hello, Diego :)!
Very nice update, I especially like those Siamese twins.
They are drawn in very loose manner and have a very good illusion of movement. You know, like they need to swing a little and start from the right foot both together :). Funny idea and very nice performance.
The whole page with them looks great. Where are their women and children and strange pets, and strange houses? Do you want to give them fur or hair? They look so naked :)
I look with a pleasure at your computer and backpack. It's just an outline, but they have a volume and weight, because the perspective in there. Lovely nude studies. Are they from a reference or an imagination?

Diego, good stuff, good hands and animals. The hands with the shading look really good, keep doing more of that.
Some crits, or not really crits, just things you can try out. I'm starting to do them as well:
You do a lot of studies of daily objects. Instead of doing the drawings of each object separatly, try to organize them all into a composition, and draw the whole compostion.
Same thing with your figure studies, try to organize a few figures into a compostion.
Your lines are clean and very good, you have a good grasp of form. Try to vary your line weight more now, make it thicker at certain areas, and thinner at others. See what happens.
If you're not practicing traditional paint right now, you could do some of that too.
Good to see you joining the community activities, they are really fun and you can learn alot.
Cheers man, en serio estas produciendo muy buenas cosas y vas muy bien, segui dibujando y haciendo!

Oh, Diego this update is different from what you did before, again you art is changing, it's adding new more complex touch. Those beautiful lines and rendering create illusion of flowing of one shape into another. Maybe it helps that poses are not static too. So general feeling those three are alive and up to something.
Now, where are the promised freaky women?

wow! Nice figure studies. You should try loosening up your digital painting style, think of your coloring in a traditional fashion. Use a series of washes and glazes(multiply layers), then build upon the values with some higher-lower opacity layers (Normal layers). keep it up! You can always refine the edges later, try to block in the planes of a figure.

Hey, Diego, you kept your promise. I got myself a woman :). I was imagining her better dressed though. :)
I like your figure studies. I wish I had your ability to control the drawing. You so punctual and precise.that's great1 I wonder about your helping lines. My quess you are using a ruler. I'm just putting very approximate lines to show the direction of a movement. Hmmm, that's something to think about for me. How do you use proportion measurements on forthshortening pose? I thought they useless in this case? Am I wrong?
Thank you very much for sharing
Sveta Dudetta
Diego
November 3rd, 2005, 04:36 PM
vigo / thnx man, yes, i really need to do that...
SVEtta / "Hey, Diego, you kept your promise. I got myself a woman . I was imagining her better dressed though." LOL.
dude, i'm really lazy when comes to drawing, i don't use erasers, no rulers. I really like to sit and draw, no too much movement, because i think i lose the impulse while erasing or doing anything else. So i block my figure in, throw some lines and axis and then start roughin' with basic shapes, the head, the clavicles, torso, arms and legs, then some details.
I never use the ruler while drawing, the last time i used a rules was about 3 years ago...and about the measurements and foreshortenin', i use some basic shapes in perspective and measure according the scale of the drawing...just using my eyes... i don't use sight size method, because i don't know how to do it.
Hope it helps.
Cheers and thanks for comments.

Good stuff, I love the figure studies. The only crit is watch the proportions on the faces, sometimes a few features look a bit asymetrical, like the bling.jpg, the nose is a bit tilted from the center (running a line through the middle of the face, from the hair tip to the base of the chin), and the right eyebrow is bigger than the left one. Other than than, your images are looking great! I love the crest-hair head in the page with three heads, and the one inspired by Fellah.

Cheers, amigo !

hey dude, now that i see that sketch i really don't like that much the design so, maybe i leave it as it is. I'll do more of it, maybe i should do some thumbs to try to find out some interesting designs and try to avoid what i always do.
Cheers buddy.

Diego, you are producing a lot of beautiful drawings and very fast. Hope you will squeeze a version of my character for sketchling in between. Yeah, I know, killed all the fun :). I like that guy in sunglasses a lot. He is so-o-o cool.

Oh, this sketch is the most beautiful, her foot is strangely small, and beneath her waist her pose is not clear, but overall it's pleasure to look. Very homey and nice mood too.

Wow, using a mouse! get a wacom!!! You are too skilled to be restricting yourself with a mouse. However, using a mouse can force you to learn techniques and to learn the painting programs. I painted with a mouse for about a year before I got a wacom.. It was a lot easier transition to digital painting because I was forced to learn techniques to make up for my lack of control with the mouse. In other words, if you struggle through painting with a mouse, and really devote yourself to it until you do get a wacom, it won't be wasted effort.. Anyway, your figure studies continue to impress me... keep it up!

Think of the chair and the figure as one <> John Raynes in one of his books gives the example of a space traveler how has never seen a human before and drew the chair legs as though they were attached to the person <> the point is to treat them as one <> the foot does not seem in scale to me <> perhaps it is foreshortened <> if so I am not really it <> a quick proportional reference is foot to head <> they should be about the same size and if they are wearing shoes slightly larger.

sve / thanks dude, my mother didn't want me to draw her, so she put her back in front of me and didn't stop moving. It was done fast, so i think i didn't get it right. :)
Mr.Blonde / thanks dude for the comments, i'm thinking about getting a wacom soon, maybe a small one, like 6 x 8 or something.
Flaskpost / thanks man, i'll do a lot, a lot more. Definitely. :)
Bojee / LOL, funny comment, my mother likes to paint landscapes and still lifes, she's not into getting colors right, or perspective, she takes it like a therapy or something, but she does it very well. :)
That fat kid / thanks buddy. Cheers
Alday.J / thanks fot checkin' my Sb dude, really aprecciate. :)
shyamshriram / yours are better, way better. :)
Mentler / great comment man, i'll think about it. Thanks man for droppin' by.
Ok, i'm been doing a lot of stuff besides drawing, sculpting, reading, listenin' music,, watchin' some movies, doing some stuff for school, very time consumin' stuff, so i'll start drawing more seriously when i get this things in order. I need to get better, i want it so bad, i need to get rid of senseless stuff in my life and get my ass to draw.

Diego, The nude studies are very beautiful, and rendering too. Maybe it would be even better if lines of silhouette were not that straight, there is always some curves here and there, small muscles, they want to be in picture too, you know :). BTW, What about the challenge from other sketch group, aren't you afraid we will lose without you???!!!!!. Check your PM and do the right thing!!!!!
