Hey all. I have some zombie related stuff I've done. This is actually part of a series of images in which my friends and I survive a zombie onslaught. I'm actually going to animate a 3 minute short cartoon in this style.

Frog, meanwhile, in search of gams
To stitch to his behind
Gnaws away at Hedgehog's hams
Which he thinks quite a find.

Stinky Bird, who once loved trees
Like juniper and pine
Now lingers in their fragrant breeze
To peck at Froggie's spine.

Shrew, he craves some rotten eggs
And will not be denied
He shoves his head 'tween Birdie's legs
To get at what's inside.

They eat until their bellies pop
And then they eat some more,
Until, stuffed full at last, they flop
Upon the forest floor.

In the pumpkins' orange glow
The ground begins to shake
And something rises from below
With mud and graveworms caked.

First a head, and then a hand
Emerges from the deep
And soon enough, a figure stands
And croaks "It's time to sleep."

One by one, she scoops them up
As quiet as the dead
And as the living world wakes up
She takes them home to bed.

What do you use, Matt, and how did you get the splatter-effect?Photoshop for everything, Zerg - but almost all my painting is done with custom brushes. The spatter is simply some scanned mess made with ink and a few faithful old toothbrushes, cropped and made into a new brush tip. Make a few different versions to avoid any repetition in the marks.

So it IS possible... :) I never thought one could get that ..."painty" look with photoshop. I won't ask you to reveal any of your other secrets.
I like the idea of scanning in a brush-stroke (or spatter) and using it as a digital brush. Never thought of that - I'll test it.

I know it's all about practice and practice - but maybe you professionals wouldn't mind putting on a step-by-step work? That might inspire and help other artists a bit, cause I always find myself stuck behind the screen with my tablet after one hour thinking.. ok... so... what next? It usually ends up as a mess cause I add too much.

But then again, time is money, so if you don't have any, don't do it. :)

Interesting that lighting compostion, really.
Some things in the drawing with the bed look so real (mattress against the wall, stains on the wall) but something takes the whole feel out of it. I don't really know what, might be the fact that I can't see the whole picture on my screen and I have to scroll.

I guess if you made every page look like that cover and you have a good story, you might get lots of money for that book. I'd say: give it time! Even if ou spent a whole year on it, the result will be there and you'll get your reward.

thanks for the advice on the page zergaloth. I think you're right. to much texture in the background can take away from the characters. And I know what you mean about taking time to do things nice and detailed. but unfortunately, time isn't something i have when it comes to submitting to distributors and stuff. It's all about being able to deliver before deadlines. goodtimes right?

The Micron cm-sb is iwata's best I think. I looove this airbrush. the lines can be so fine, you can literally sign a check with it.
