I meant to post this a week ago when he was able to show his images, and more stuff started showing up online.

Anyways, here's many of Johns environment-concepts ---- brilliant stuff ---- and an awesome example of what is expected out of concept-design for Next-Gen games as we evolve.
Many of these were over block-models, I've gotten to see a few when Epic has demoed here at Midway --- The block models, are very much a cube like next to another cube LOL ;) --- and he does an amazing job with phototexture, and some textures supplied by Epic for their game.

John's site (http://www.johnwallin.net/site/main.html)

more stuffs (http://www.shacknews.com/extras/destroyedbeauty/070505_destroyedbeauty_01.x)

This is very much where concept-design is moving towards --- even more detailed than movie-concepts ----- 5 days spent on a well-rendered environment that lands dozens and dozens of concepts at one time.

Now, we just need HawkPrey to upload some of his stuffs!!

Wow, I'll have to add this guy to my list of favorite matte painters. He's pretty darn good.

Those are quite nice. I like the combination of old red bricks and the green metal (whatever it's called). Creates a nice familiar but yet unfamiliar atmosphere.
I also liked how he re-used similar shapes in the architecture, like the tall stretched open beak structures.

Not sure what to think of 'next gen' gaming though... *cough*

Edit: There's something STRANGE doing on with the order of the posts... It's using clientside time to sort the posts maybe?

very, very cool

This must be a pretty high profile game considering the caliber/depth of preproduction art. I saw a few of these at sijun, it's nice to see more.

Are alot of companies getting into the habit of this type of concept work? With the new systems there's so much more visually, I guess that's a good sign for concept artists?

edit: awesome post order.

This dude is awesome. That Gears of War gallery reminds me of HL2. Definitely adding this guy to my favorites list.

I'm enjoying the story they have with this game. Pretty deep compared to most.I hope it will be good.

Really nice stuff.

John Wallin was one of the 4 artists (including Philip Straub and Linda Bergkvist) who were featured in the D'Artiste book. I have that book, and I have to say I wasn't all that taken by his work on display there, but this new work is very awesome. Captures the feel of the world very well, nice style.

The image of the bandstand-ish thing with the pink blossoming trees in the foreground is insane - I couldn't tell if it was a painting or a fully detailed 3d rendering... wow.

The 3d environment artists have also done a great job turning his ideas into game assets, the whole game looks stunning IMHO. A great merging of top-quality art, next-generation technology and a whole lot of effort!

Some of those are amazing. The environments look great. I kinda wish the soldiers looked that good. The soldiers could be from any one of a half-dozen next gen games coming out (why are soldiers in the future so preoccupied with protecting their shoulders?). But his work is downright fantastic.
