I had been reading the novel a year or two ago and planned on designing the aliens from the story who come out of the cylinders and pilot the Tripod war machines for a while, but I figured I'd wait for the movie to come out and see what the designers/director would come up with.

I love the Tripods, but I wasn't really a fan of the actual Martian design in the new film, so I spent a couple days drawing out what I originally would have liked to have seen.

Here are two designs of my own, followed up by a third, which is essentially exactly how H. G. Wells describes them in the 1898 novel (which is also why is looks insanely cheesy, hah).

very cool stuff. At first I thought the top one was more of a tripod redesign. I at first saw it a little as large towering creature built to terrorize whatever's beneath it.

I like when people aren't afraid to incorporate a little bit of asymmetry into their creatures as well. It seams to be a common fear, as if all real living animals are always symmetrical.

hah, i thought you had totally dissapeared from the face of the earth for a while.

Great to see your stuff again.

Really love these designs. I agree the aliens shown in the film didn't live up to the tripods at all, both of your concepts are much better! Then again, I wish the audience never saw the aliens themselves until the end when one falls out of the cockpit.

Great stuff!

I like how the first one has echoes of the '50s George Pal martians.

All three aliens have a nice abstract quality too them. What makes them even creepier is the fact that I can't tell what I'm looking at, especially the second one. Although, my favorite is the first one. The glowing ribcage is awesome. Go towards the light...wtf, no don't!

cool designs, the first one is defiently my favorite. I haven't read the book yet but I've heard the old radio version thing and heard alot about the book (my boyfriends a big fan) but when I saw the movie it wasnt as good as id hoped :( great drawings though :)

very cool brass,

I do have some minor issues with the 1st one, but its just merely "if-this-had to-walk-around-would-it-be-able-to" kinda way...

Post more :D

I really like these, and I also didn't care much for the actual aliens in the movie. I would have liked to see them like in the book, like your 3rd drawing. Took a peek at your homepage and you have some really cool creatures on it, I also really like the coloring tutorial, maybe you could add some text..

I do have one question though, why do nearly all of your designs have such vestigal hands ? Just something I noticed :)

edit, oh and that little cross on the ground, does that really help or is that more of a, letting it look cool and scientific kinda thingy?

WOW! You definitely create unique and beautiful characters!

The first one is my fave. The colors on it really work well.

cool stuff man! fun to see some work of yours again. its been awhile since i saw anything. I like the first one the most. The second one is alittle too dark i think, its makes it hard to make out. but maybe our screens are calibrated differently. who know. cool stuff anyway! Now give me MORRRREEEE!!!! :rendered:

I wasn't feeling the alien designs in the new movie either. They seemed to cartoony and not alien enough. Now - what you have here feels waaaay more alien like. It would have been interesting to see your designs fleshed out and moving around screen. The first two are wicked!

Very nice. I love your line work. The way that orange melts into the gray on the first image is lovely. Great work.

Nice, Im dissapointed that more War of the Worlds fan art hasnt made it way here after the movie. I have been meaning to read the book for a while, and I had to go pick it up after watching the movie.

Yeah, the design looks cheesy, but I think only because Wells and Lovecrafts designs were so horribly copied over and over since then. Gotta give him credit for that...

And im surprised how scientific Wells gets early on in his book about Mars. I would expect it to not be so considering it was written over a century ago. Another good series that has been cheesified beyond recognition is the original Conan series, written by Robert E Howard. Really good pre Tolkien fantasy reading.

Well damn, it's about time you posted something! I was just talking to someone about you... we were wondering where you've been. Glad to see you're still able to kick mad ass! Always loved your line work. And your colors compliment the lines really really nicely. Now I'm gonna go to your website... Keep rockin' it!

Peace,

I like the 3rd one the best. I know when we think of aliens, we model them after creatures on Earth. Eyes, appendages, brains, mouths, etc. I know that aliens could be something we could never envision, but it's nice to see eyes and mouths.

What I wouldn't give to see that dude in white in a movie, all Cobra Commander stylez. Your uninhibited/stream of consciousness flow, on some of these, is always inspirational. Although that paint-over makes me want to see you try a character that doesn't have lines on it. Yay for you though dirtybirdy.

hey Aaron,

It's always a treat to see new work from you - I really like your design sensibilities! My only crit would be that I would want to see the rendering pushed a little more. I know it's consistent with your graphic style, but sometimes they come off a bit flat, particulary the guy in white. It would be nice to see some of those forms popping off the page a little more. I love the cityscape though - great mood and shapes going on....nice!

Very nice,
I agree the aliens were weak and thier tripod design based on thieir machines has been done before, check out 'The Tripods' an old BBC TV show.
The Aliens had the three legged idea, and bubble wrap for skin(budget constraints i'm afraid)
I like the first design as it moves away from the 2 eyes mouth look.

Cheers.

That gladiator mutant is fucking awesome, only crit is on the white feller, his foot should go out a little more, it looks awfully short right now and it seems like he would fall forward if he tried to walk
