My latest. I did this today after I got my Painter IX upgrade and my Wacom 6D art pen. I had already gotten a new 9X12 Intuos3 a couple weeks ago. This is the first instance where I finally got to sit down for a day and hammer something out. My pants are getting tight just thinking about Painter IX. There's so much kick-ass stuff about each. This was done mostly with Painter's new artist's oil brushes with a few flat variants that I customized for the new wacom pen that took advantage of the bearing control.
I'm not sure if this belongs here in the finished section or not but I figured what the hell. I'd give it a shot. That's not to say that 'helpfull critiques' are anything less than welcome.

I'm okay with the creature but not exactly thrilled with the background. I think you could've probably designed out a more pleasing shape that helps the figure along a little better and helps it stand out. The cave shape you have back there almost fits too conveniently around the creature right now.

I like the brush strokes, but I think the muscles and tendons should have more attention paid to them. Exaggerate them more, and use more contrast.
Other than that, it's a really cool concept creature! I dig the spiny things.

oh nice, stepping out of your exo brush boundries eh, :) I think you need to work on your composition and colours though, like the shape of the bg, and where the limbs intersect is a lil disturbing to the eye. Also i think you can afford to be a lil more adventurous with your colours and really try and set up more contrast with a wider value range and more complimentary colours seperating light and shadow.

Thanks for the feedback. I've since tweaked it a bit. I made the environment a little more coherrent mostly. I'm still a little uneasy when it comes to deviating too far from the color scheme but I agree that the current color schome just doesn't pop the way it should.

I am digging this creature, but to enchance the creature, perhaps you could add a strong secondary light source from behind it to make is stand out more? Just a thought, still this design is very pleasing : )
