Well, I'm not really new to CA. I'm constantly viewing peoples work on this site for inspiration, and I love the feedback people get from professionals here at CA. I have plenty of old work to post, but my plan is to only post new work. I've attended CCAD (Columbus College of Art & Design) for two years and I'll be a junior in the fall. Well here's some of the sketches from my sketchbook. I've kind of dubbed it my from-the-mind-sketchbook, since I almost always work from life or photographs. CC most certainly welcome.

Great stuff! Lotsa nice rendering! :)

Work more on the shapes as in anatmoy (which is more or less the basic rule here), but this promise good works to come! :)

What pencils and paper are you using?

Yeah, I've been pretty frustrated with how I've been drawing figures lately. What can I do to improve them. I do pretty well whenever I have a model or photo in front of me. To be honest, I rarely work straight from the mind. I'll just keep practicing and post whenever I see improvement.
I'm using a basic strathmore sketchbook, but I colorized the first sketch in photoshop. Thought it needed a little color. Pencils, I used an HB, B, and 2B.

Primarily, I do portraits. Here's a couple I did back at school. All of them are in my sketchbook, except the guy on the bench. That one was done on bristol board with an HB, B, and a 2B. Rendering comes pretty naturally to me; however, I envy those that can paint and draw loosely. Whenever I draw loosely I tend to lose form.

thanks for the post in my thread
the first post is shaded so smoothly
drawing loosely is just to get the basic shapes in
you can always fix the proportions when rendering
the one with the guy on the bench is amazing too

nice stuff, your sense of refinement is nice on the more finished pieces!

work on getting the base form right early on though (i've got the same problem).. you did it well in that small page with the hands, those are great!

keep it up, and welcome to ca.org!!!

dashi: thanks for lookin'! Need lots of feedback from other artists. Sometimes when I spend too much time in my hole I lose direction. Need people to guide me out. :nohope:

blankslatejoe: You are correct sir. I usually don't work out the gesture enough and all of my figures, beasts, and aliens come out looking way too static. Drawing hands gives me something simple to practice on. They came out with energy, but not the other sketches.

Alright, I'm going to post today's sketches, but I don't have a scanner. So I'll spend the next hour taking digital photo's of them. That means check back tomorrow, they'll be more sketches then.

Wow - great renderings. Drawing the figure will come with time and a shitload of hard work. You're at the right place...draw from the live model as much as you can, and study your anatomy.
I think with some more experience and anatomical knowledge your work is going to be tops. You already render beautifully...looking forward to seeing more! :confident

Hey man, thanks for stopping but and dropping some tips in my SB. I really like the guy on the bench. Fantastic work. You have some good studies here, especially the second hand study. I work from photo ref myself and I am trying desperately to do so. Burne Hogarth's books were recommended to me on this forum. I picked up one. It does a fantastic job of defining proportions, muscle groups, form and movements. I think it will be the resource that helps me dray from the mind more. Take a look at those. They may be helpful if you too are looking at getting away from references as a focus.

Ooh, thanks for the tips and comments guys.
Alexx: here's a larger version of the bench guy. This actually isn't in my sketchbook, but I liked it so I posted it.

Alright here's some more sketches, busted out a bic pen today. Going to try to post daily. I'd like feedback from everyone, and I'll do the same for you all. I enjoy your sketchbooks. Actually, I find a spark of creativity after browsing through them. Again, thanks for looking.

Here's some sketches I did this morning. Feel free to chime in and give me some advice, especially with my figurative work. All still done from the mind, with the exception of one figure, in which I did a master copy of one of Raphael Sanzio's drawings. Tomorrow I'm going to try to draw a master copy from another angle (Mentler suggested it on his thread). Been studying lots of anatomy books along with Mentler's thread, Bones, Muscles, and Flesh. Oh yeah, threw in another rendering I did this year too. If you have a comment on my figures, please be specific (i.e. torso is too long, incorrect deltoid shape, etc). You can even take my drawings and mark on them digitally if you'd like. More to come tomorrow.

You have very strong rendering skills <> they will take you a long way professionally <> do not confuse these skills with drawing however <> as far as drawing is concerned you have a way to go <> and I see is in your renderings <> not to worry 99.9% of viewers won't notice so you are relative safe <> number one you should avoid working from photograghs <> the camera sees less than you do >< you have two eyes the camera only has one >< we see totally different that a camera ><>< hold your hand out with one finger up and one eye closed >< now open that eye up and close the other eye >< note how it moves <> this is the equilient of about inches in relation to and object in the distance <> professionals can always tell if something is drawn or painted from a photo <> in my book you cheat yourself out of the little extra dimensional reality that we have>

Jump over to SoFA <> that is where I usually give these kind of crits <>

awesome rendering skills..i need to go back to practice my rendering sucks ..yeap ditch photos (use then only as reference) rendering from them might be good practice but it does not teach you "feeling"..you need to feel diferent textures..weight..movement..air ..living things..the need to experience life will help you to become more sensitive. Mentler is the man..follow his advice..hehe..well everybody here does..

thanx again everyone

Deez: I use hot press (plate) bristol board with an HB, B, and 2B pencil.
In terms of time it takes to complete, the first one with the guy on the bench took about 8-10 hours. It's only 11 x 14 inches. The one of the girl took around 25-30 hours! It's around 35 x 26 inches.

Mentler: Thanks for criting. Yeah, rendering is an entirely different discipline then drawing. I've discovered that drawing from the mind is far more difficult and takes alot more concentration then drawing from life and photos. Don't mistake though, I work from life 75% of the time. Photo's do leave out alot. Anyway, I'll be posting more of my non-reference figures soon as well.

Hey man, cool lip studies. They have that Jim Carey in the Mask kinda feel to them. Also, the one face does as well. Very nice rendering on the portrait. Rendering is obviously a very strong point for you. Let's see more.

Go after the planes they are a very important key <> do pages and pages and pages of features <> drawing is the important thing <> you do not become a great pianist by thinking about your piano <> the art is in the doing <> the activity itself is the product <> not what other people say <> the reward is the feeling you have while doing it

Dashi: thanx man, I appreciate your enthusiasm!

hylandr2: Yeah, I figured exaggeration was the best way to go to learn expressions. I'll tone it down a little once I get better overall at drawing facial features.

Mentler: thanks for the words of wisdom :}. It's been difficult to apply all of the knowledge I've abtained from your threads, from my classes, and from numerous anatomy books I've read. Proving that you are absolutely correct; the art is in doing.

hmm...well, I've been super frustrated lately with my drawing. I've realized that all I am capable of achieving is a sour, static realism. Anyway, I've said this before and I believe this to be true, as artists, we make the biggest jumps in our game when we are struggling the most. So, I'm hoping I make some big gains in the near future, :nohope: . Anyway, here's some more sketches.

Well, It's been a couple weeks since I've posted, but I finally found my way back to the drawing table. I've been undergoing RA traing at CCAD (Columbus College of Art and Design). I drew these four creatures fairly quickly. Each one took roughly one hour. They were alot of fun to draw and it's given me some great ideas for painting this semester. I appreciate criticism as much as I appreciate compliments people, so don't be shy. Comment away. More posts on the way (a shitload more, thanks to my schedule this semester).

One more thought, if anyone is interested. My website is up and running, www.EricSpray.com. Most of the work in my online portfolio is from my sophomore year. I hope to get better and post some progress pieces soon. Let me know what you guys think of the site! It's pretty goofy, but if you knew me you'd find it to be fitting. Thanx people. Eric

One of my favorite s/b threads so far, mind blowing!
I can see you're doing lots of monsters and strange people, but maybe some extremer surrealism would look fantastic from you.
