Britt!!!!
I'm so happy to see the new shit!!! The work is looking sharp bro...
The first two (esp nemo) have such an ambitious sense of unity.... wonderful style...
The little ninja punk is an awesome reconcilliation of analog and digi,,,,you cold crushed that shit. I feel like you could of investigated more ways to diferrentiate the shiny quality of the armoured bits, seeing as how strong reflections in a shiny surface actually affect the air and atmospheric tone all around them and not just stay in the material, like a non reflective texture... sweet..
All the work is great to see because you have a tendency to make the expression of ideas and whimsy/emotion take the primary role of significance,,,an aproach I think is the most admirable....I guess what I mean is that any number of folks could point out obvious conflicts in terms of realistic treatments and proportions, but it would be a moot point in the context of your product..... There is a highly evolved, seemless feel to the way a lot of imaginative info is infused into a picture that ultimately, (due to it's ability to touch the right part of the veiwers brain),,looks real.
Bravo guy...do you oc????
bye for now

These are great, especially the first two. Any time someone has some cool Little Nemo in Slumberland influences, it makes my day. All of these characters would be great in some type of children's book, the kind that is more that the adults get. The one with the girl with the crossbow riding the mollusk thing has a nice eerie atmosphere. Nice.

brtt- finnally an update..u still working on that painting u told me about?.....updates are getting scant these days.
your td looks good, but if were to be nitpicky and crit i would have to say that the top space of the illustration just doesnt seem interesting even if it is occupied by the trees and castle...i would prolly have cropped it in more closer and put more of a focus on the guys doing battle. maybe go with a lower angle shot with the guy on the right enlarged to be in the foreground. and the guy ruushing towards him to be pushed back just to get more depth, since both of them are the same size the composition appears to symmetrical. but im just rambling on ... i really would like to see this one colored.
well thats it my two cents.
keep posting, and if you get a chance check out the other guys sketchbooks in our group lots of good artworks in there.
cheers!

August 13th, 2005, 09:25 AM
This new drawing for the td is ..........
What a beautiful profile,,,what a fantastic balance of classically influenced light and shadow, what a brilliant choice of head proportion, what the fuck!!!
These two mens faces really remind me of Yoshitaka Amato ( the guy who did the character design for Vampire hunter D, Final Fantasy etc...) They have the same Phsycopathic, spiritual sense of calm as his..... The hatchwork is so understated...but it does not lose an ounce of power and intention,,,,, all in all it is a very meditative and knowledgeable drawing, and I am insanely jealous of you for doing it. ha.
I also love how both figure seem lost in their own personal thoughts despite their being locked in what appears to be an (im)mortal struggle,,,, there is something proverbial or analogous about it..a hidden lesson or universal truth buried in the representation......thats what I call art.....
anyways, I hope you know I am completely serious,,( I just read over what I wrote and it sounds like I am waxing like some over-stated fine art critic,,,,{Clemente Greenburgh} ewwwwwwwww.......)
Don't stop now,, you seem to be approaching a zenith of both ability and inference that is like, bhuddist, man.. Just promise you will not forsake drawing and retreat to a mountain cave to practice caligraphy exclusively, okay?
Bye for now,, I am waiting for updates.

nice Britt, painterly stuff.. I envy that look.. :S I could never have balls to paint like that. sort of reminds me of Clogik's stuff too.. textures and details, looking good man. One thing though, the bottom bit of its body is a bit blend? a faint detail like you did in the tail bit would be good I think. Also if there was a hint of light direction from the top, as the top bit is very shiny.. god I am so shit at giving crits.. :< god damn..
Love your work dude, you should POST MORE OFTEN!! :)
:)
chris ocampo
August 16th, 2005, 04:47 AM
BRITT! thats a really cool concept. i think you could punch up the silohuette more and put a glow on the face. maybe try putting some accent light on the tail coming from the top or back light it a bit?. cuz i think that is a really cool part of the design that you can have a lot of fun with. you might think of giving the tail a more angular shape too now that i think of it (to fit with the rest of the design philosophy. try punching up some green saturation on the surrounding water to really pop the red creature. it looks cool as is but it could look even more amazing.
the other drawing i'm diggin is the kid in the costume (nemo?). the only crit on that would be the symmetry on his face. it think it's working right now cuz the viewer participates in the expression because it's so blank. he could be scared or full of wonder or happy excited. but i would try a couple of different expressions to see what happens. remember that assymetry is very powerful for everything, especially expressions.
i see so much improvement in your work. not just technical drawing/painting, but your understanding of movement and shape. your compositions are becoming more dynamic and powerful. keep banging them out, they're getting better and better.
by the way, are you taking that figure throwing class this semester?
i'm about to hit that up.
loomer
August 17th, 2005, 12:32 PM
cool britt - it seems you've gotten more bold with the painter work too..which is good. Maybe it's the addition of really strong lights and darks, but it seems to really pop now. Cheers to my man- always look forward to new stuff from you

bumskee Those are awsome points bumskee... I totally agree with you. Thanks a lot for your thoughts and time. :rendered:
chris ocampo Thankyou so much Chris...I really appreciate your crit. The assemetry of the face idea is genious and I plan on using it accordingly from now on..
As for the figure throwing class...I haven't even heard of a class like that...sounds kind of funny, but I will be taking figure painting. Looking foward to experimenting with some stuff there. Should be fun.
loomer Thanks man..I do feel more comfortable with digital painting now and hope to be using more color in my pieces as a result of my practice. :rendered: :tihi:

August 18th, 2005, 11:48 AM
Your works have a very enchanting feel to them, your rendering is great, your digital painting has a beautiful understated tone to them - if I had to give a crit about some of them its that you need to blend some of the sketchy lines more to solidify them.
Your tonal work is also excellent, but you may want to invest in some prosmacolor pencils or a graphite box set to imrpove the range to take ti to another level.
I will say that the last piece doesn't really tickle my fancy however, I think a large part is that those glowing arm blade or whathever they are just don't sit right visually.
Kepp up the good work.

how awsome is the foreground! :confident good going Britt, underground scenery is so damn hard, you make it look easy man. the hint of pink is working well, though I think the right side could use some definition.. even if it's kinda hazy.. it seems to blend right into background. Sort of losing the depth.. Also maybe the claws are too short? it looks menacing but a bit short to see any threat. :P but what do I know.. hehe
Love the textures on the shell.. what is that black thing in the front?
clogik
August 23rd, 2005, 02:58 AM
looking good, im enjoying the saturated blues in this scheme. the values seem to be working well..some crits: i think there should be more reflected pink light on the left claw(our right) of the sea creature, and maybe soften the other side.
the foreground shape looks visually interesting, but i ithink it could use one more extra large solid object just kind of peeking into the composition from the left side... maybe a larger coral. i dunno. also i think the bottom right corner is begging for maybe some smaller rocks just to fill space up...you could do a trail of shells and rocks receding towards the back.. maybe a trail that the creatures are folowing. my two cents.
is this photoshop?

that color study is looking great man. You should blow that puppy up and just start working on it from there. What is that black thing on the front? Looks like it could be a rider of sorts...?
- I do see some of clogik's points. A little added pink light would give it something. Just don't go crazy with the pink..less is more sometimes, ya know?
looking forward to seeing these piece done man!

I like the update for the guy with the hands. For some reason, I really like the background in the upper left corner. It has an appropriate atmosphere, I can't really say why.
The color study looks great, too. Plus, I like seeing the prelim sketches. I'm guessing that that is some type of rider in the front dangling a lure of some type; kind of like putting the carrot before the horse type thing. Nice.

I bet you guys are really badass dressers...always lookin real sharp, and hip...and your $8 dollar t-shirts look like $50 designer Tees....ok, I'm off somewhere.
I'm liking this guy...even if his sword is difficult to get too..he probably just points at his sword and it materializes in his hand.

thanks a lot for the great post over in my SB..... Man you are not kidding about how much speed would help us all attain our artistic ambitions,,,,there is so much good art on this site,, it is simultaneously stimulating and wretchedly depressing,,,all at the same time!!!!! There are just too many things to be good at all at the same time, you know????
anyhoo,, lovin' that new sketch with the black prismacolor,,,,,,It was funny cuz' I was thinking,," If the outlet for that hooka on 'is back is above the mouthpeice wherever it is,,,,wouldn't that start a siphon????" Sure enough,, your brilliant analytical mind had that pegged from the start and you drew the second kid displaying this scientific marvel....Great costume design, by the way.....keep it up man ,,,and listen to the nagging voice in your head that tells you to draw when you should be asleep, operating machinery, drinking, eating, meeting girls, fraternizing etc. You got the skills, the imagination, and the signature style.

Hey Britt! *waves*
This is the first time I've peeked into your sketchbook, so forgive me :)
Cute idea with the Brain Sucker; would be kinda neat if when you exhaled, its eyes bulged out and it inflated. I dunno if you want to do toy design, but it'd be good to see a couple drawings showing how it worked (maybe a bug-eyed inflated pic!) ;)
Your armor studies are also very nice, I like seeing how armor is broken up and how it works, same with the spiffy apple slicer!
As far as areas to work on go, some of your poses feel a bit stiff (yeah, I know they're stuck in suits of bulky armor) but even your Brownie-Squire could use some fluidity in his pose. His codpiece is awesome, btw :)

But who cares, here is a Bubble Fan. What the HELL is that? Basiclly bubbles are generated in the ring and propelled by the wonderful fan and there you go.

that's a great fuckn' idea man. they make all these bubble blowers, that really suck, but if you could devise some apparatus that attached to a regular fan that would be the sweetest. I only know so much, cause my kid loves bubbles, and we tried one of those shitty blowers. I'd buy yours!

i like this one. i think you could still milk it though. his gesture looks a little non threatening. it's a stationary pose. try putting him off balance or have his limbs moving forward. i always try to think "what was he doing before? and what is he doing after the pose?" could try lowering the eye level, it might pump the drama up more. the painting is good. keep it up, i see lots of progress.
and I'm still working on this one

Awsome update, love the little boy, but waitress is stunning, she's absolutely HOT! nice pose, I would buy that, did you use a ref? That shell thing is turning out nicely.. nice depth, you love under water scenery huh? :) all good, something I would be too scared to paint..show us more dude!!

It is like you are kind of a genius or something,,,,
I love it when you post,, It means I get to write something...
The waitress went straight in to my favorites folder, thank you very much....I am loving the beautiful children you have been painting lately with the faint mongolian eye flaps,,,I love the planar construction with the very stylized subject.... bra-vo
bubble fan, apple slayer, I love...You are a rennaisance man, you know?
the line work on the fan schematics looks like some of the trippy stuff that old italian cubo-futurist used to do,, a little wobbly but accurate,, it is a charming combo....oh well bye

Brainsucker rocks out man!!! freaking cool.. you should have submitted it for the COW brainstealer project...! cool shit.. that large buggy thing in the little city is working out nicely.. I would suggest maybe adding some light in the tower like you did in the background buildings... Also.. i would make your canvas size larger... and not so closely cropped to the top on the creature... extend it upwards a bit... give the drawing more depth.. looks good..

the brainsucker returns! I totally agree with bumskee . that waitress is a FOXXX ! I'd eat whatever she's serving..
that underwater piece is coming great...I love it. I would have to disagree with chris (no offense man) - the pose doesn't bother me at all. Looks pretty natural for a giant hermit crab looking freak!
can't wait to see it finished

chris ocampo Thanks Chris. Those are some great ideas and I agree with many of them. The eye level would definitely make for a more dramatic scheme, especially if 3 point perspective were a factor.
bumskee Hows is goin' man? Ya, I like the underwater stuff, its a good challenge. The atmospheric perspective is tough to nail down.
Oh ya, No ref on the girl...just having fun displaying a product and displaying mood.
codakromek Thanks Codak. I'm honored by your complement. Italian futuristic clubs sound very cool. I will have to look at them for inspiration. I drew this one according to some clubs I use to go to. Sometimes I would take my sketchbook draw what I saw to build up the good ole' memory reference. I think it helps a lot to just step back from those interesting places and absorb their harmony. After that you jump in and see what all the fun is about.
Kittywolf13 Thankyou so much. :cheerleader: *starts dancing like a fool cause he doesn't know how*
Vigostar Good calls on the crit..Thanks for the crit man, I appreciate it very much. Next time you see this piece it will be adjusted accordingly.
loomer Thanks dude... I will probably keep the pose the same. Only because I am too lazy to fix it.hehe. And careful of the waitress...she has 4 kids and a load of credit debt.

Love the variety in your stuff, and the brainsucker :D
About your crabshellmonsterthingy, don't forget his castshadow of the monster. He could have a bit more irregularities in his shell, mayby give the shell itself a less typical shape. You also migth consider changing the cropping of the picture. I see you got other crab monsters behind it but it's not showing very well. A bit more water to make it more obvious it's taking place in the sea.
Don't forget to post more :)

Good update, Britt. The brain sucker is cool, but isn't what that kid is doing with that straw self-canibalization? Then again, maybe it's just starving, that kid doesn't look to bright.
The waitress is nice and what everybody said before is true. Tck-tck. She looks like the style of Glenn Barr.
The shellcrabthing doesn't have that underwater feel to it, almost like a hazy night. I could be wrong. It has happened before.
Keep up the great posts, I really admire your work.

Hello, Britt, I'm deeply impressed with you work. I have just one note, I wanted to see more, I want to see your work in different moods of yours - when you at ease, when you're down, when you laughing. You actually already did, but I just left with a feeling I want to see more of it. You are a storyteller like a madplanet. Tell us more stories, please.

Hello, Britt. Charming cartoons. I like that they are rough (not polished as in most cartoon drawings). Little mole is so much fun. He is as individual as Grimm in Sunday newspaper. I looked again through your book and enjoyed so much. And reading was fun too. I like your personality and your friends here.
The most memorable in your work for me are the first and the fifth drawings in first post. Actually this fish eater is my absolute favorite. I love his greedy eyes and his dedication. The pose, fancy hairdo (well, that's a clever idea! :) Who whispered it to your ear, Karl Lagerfeld? :)), his costume, his little meaty feet. He's eerie and adorable at the same time.
Of course, I like the brain sucker dearly. Expression of his face very believable. He has a charm. He looks like a more simple-minded relative of the fish eater, but not that passionate about what he does :). It's nothing new for him. Acute excitement of first sensation is gone :). Not for the fish eater though.
And I like sweet couple of the warrior and his Sancho Panso a lot.
So great, thought provoking, laugh inducing, ass kicking work :yayca:.
Wow, read about you hobby, that's something new, shaving armpits! You are probably dying inside until hair grow up again :)

Andrew_Ley Thanks man. Do you like to animate? I would think so since your an animator. I did 2d in school, but absolutely hated the tedious process of redrawing hundreds of pages to make something look right. Things may be different today with 3d, but Im new to the whole thing.

sup britt!,
the bubble fan turned out nice. having concept work to finished 3d will look great in your portfolio.
one thing about your figure paintings: try and paint on toned ground. painting on white background has only been around since the last century. up until then, everyone painted on toned ground. and when i say everyone, i mean all the masters...it makes it easier to establish your 3 value system. paint your dark value shadow shapes on your toned ground. get your shadow edges exactly right. then pop in your highlights, still paying attention to the edges (which are usually sharper than shadow edges.) it's easier to establish value relationships this way. you can "key" your painting with the darkest dark and your lightest light, because you have a middle value to judge it by (the same you did your b+w rendering in clapp's class). john clapp put it to me like this- in musical terms, if you played the note "g" all by itself, then i could not guess what note it was. but if you hit "middle c" then played "g" after, i could guess the note you played because of relationship between them. how much higher/lighter or lower/darker they are to each other. i hope this helps.
some of those mole drawing have really nice shapes and personality. i wish i made it to that class to see what everyone did...cool assignment.
you keep on getting better britt!

Like the update. the second one has a model railroad feel to it. That's given as a compliment. My grandfather was huge into model railroading and as an artist, I was always amazed at the amount of creativity that he put into his craft. It was a work of art in itself, so this reminds me a bit of that. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Britt, you captured the light, I'd say, but I don't know about that rug thing. the hand looks like it is floating above it instead of resting on it. Was this intentional? The rug actually has the effect of movement, like it is flowing. Nice to see the experimentation.
