huzzah man, very VERY nice to see you here. good stuff . got one question- most of your stuff (i saw at least) is monsters and people; how are you at other subjects (environments, vehicles, anything)? i'm just curios.
one more place to check every day, damn :xx:

hey lukias your sketches are kick ass I was wondering at what size are those monster drawings. I like those alot.
Lukias
March 26th, 2003, 11:23 PM
Hey Lung_Bug! Well.. I have always been into the organic side of things.. the living as opposed to the constructed. Mecha's, enviroments, perspective stuff is something I have never done.. doesn't interest me, but I wouldn't be surprised if that changed soon. I'm content at the mo with my humans and monsters but yeah having the knowledge of the other side would be sweet. Enviroments I might give some more thought, thats something I would like to add actually.. cos I suck with bg's etc.
Cheers for the comments man:)
2kre8- Everything I do is on A4..(US Letter would be closet). Just the average.
Cheers dude, appreciate your reply.

March 27th, 2003, 06:29 PM
actually, i'm in a pretty same position right now- all my previous work consists of characters, portraits and such with a few exceptions). at one point i got frustrated being limited by my narrow knowledge (or rather got tired of doing characters in front of a blue, black, or the latest, orange background) and started studying various subjects. it's really nice to be able to place a character somewhere, i must say :). anyways, i see you're happy at the moment, i'm just rambling (instead of learning chemistry). perspective stuff i think you should be interested in, having in mind it quite affects drawing the human body? well, one can be able to draw someone without knowing the technical side of it (and even be perfect at it). i'll stop now and get some sleep, have no idea what i just wrote but i hope it makes some sense
and oh, WHERE'S THE UPDATE?! ;)
(added note: look at me, writing like i'm 45. smartass scum, that's what i am)

haha!. very valid comments man and you're fully in the green for saying it.
I agree, having well constucted environments would be spiffy cool, bibbidy whack.. and thats no lie. Nuts.
Heres a couple more I should have posted earlier. Well..whatever.

Painting?. Never heard of him...
Naa I tried a few weeks back, twas amazingly frustrating and I gave up. I'm off traveling soon so before I go I would like to get some sketching in and trying to learn how to paint is too much of an undertaking. Maybe a while from now when I get settled again I'll try picking it up.
I am pretty sure that I would find oils easier, even though its slower I think I would have more patience for it. With digital the results were poor and time consuming.. for me atleast.
Following a tut could make all the difference, by damn I'm lazy.
Thanks for your comment Targete.. always a buzz.

dilation- thanks
Lung_bug- yeah you should start one for sure.
Influences?. Yeah Wes9000, Cos, Tew, Justin Sweet. I enjoy anyone who digs realism(well Tew just has the narliest way with the human figure). I grab pointers from here and there.. as ya do.
sin- I've be drawing since I could(I'm 23).. like most kids I guess.. but have gotten more serious about it over the last 18 months. Really appreciate your comments sin!
davi- cheera again davi
killing.people- Is that like a deep wise voice stating with clarity and knowing "You can paint". Because I got the warm fuzzies just from hearing it that way.
Now I must pray. thankyou

NICE WORK! well man the only thing I have to say is where are the hands? I think try and work the hands in more with your gestures and working on the hands a little more in your more well worked sketches. Hands suck to draw... I should know cause I suck drawing them! :D Well done work nonetheless
Lukias
April 8th, 2003, 09:36 AM
Yeah your right, hands are tough and sometimes I find it easier to try get away with suggested hands.. if you catch my drift. Often trying to render eash digit etc can make smaller elements like that appear over cluttered.
But I will make a point to work on it!
These are from the sketching board.. just thought I'd shove em in here.
Should have some more real soon. Uploading issues at the mo.

holy shit, you are fucking awesome.. . monsters, concepts, life drawings. .everything. i can definitely see the wes9000 influence in your work (hes a huge inluence of mine also).. . .i was also VERY relieved when you said that you are 23.. .i was really hoping that you arent my age (18) because that would mean that you are just WAY better than me. . ..now i have a few years to try and reach your level of total skillage.. .hehe. really really amazing stuff.. .i cant wait to see more. man, i really need to start drawing now. .no more time to waste!

rubygen- thanks!
Oblio- haha Did you here that Ruby, oblio thinks you two are a couple!!!! ;) thanks man, much appreciated.
Barnabasgrey- No you must strive to be much better I say!!!
Cheers mate!
killing.people- Arg I would love to say "Gosh darn you guys saw right through me, yes I can paint with decent results". But alas, I runny turd sloshed in a bucket of afterbirth would be more visually appealing than one my my painted works.
Well maybe not that bad... I got carried away trying to think of something really gross.
Thanks for caring though man!!!. There will always be a warmth between us.
metalwinds- Stoked you like my work man... but you make me age paranoid!!. God damn it, I feel like I was 18 yesterday... you'll feel that too and sooner than you think!!.
Not trying to blow my trumpet here but it's the last 18 months that have been serious for me(seems to get progressivley more so) the other years were spent smoking weed, skating, and doing jack shit. I drew maybe once a fortnight. So I reckon I could be ALOT better than I am now if i'd put time aside for my art.
Which means theres no excuse for you not to be alot better than I am now when you reach this age!!!.
GET BUSY BOY, BEFORE YOU FIND GREY HAIRS ON YAR CHIN!
:)
jester- Girl??. Oops maybe I didn't get that one accross right. Heh glad you like it anyway!
Rusty- Hey man, visa versa. Your work pushes my eyes out with excitment... and that can be unhealthy.
What?. Your work comes accross just as finished as this.... besides technically when is a piece finished?. I think all of these could have alot more time put into them... but yeah it gets boring quick I know!.

yeah dude, i know what youre saying about the drawing thing.. . throughout high school i didnt draw anything on my own time.. and i would spend the entire summer without doing a single drawing.. . thats definitely changed now though. this last post is really nice.. .. the monsters are really cool, but at a first glance, i thought they were just 2 designs for monsters. . .i didnt even know they were interacting. they seem very seperated from each other (other than the stabbing). ..and honestly the composition is a little boring. . .2 figures almost standing side by side in the middle of the page. i like their gestures though. .very lifelike. hope this helps some. ..not sure if what ive said is valid or not.. .
Lukias
April 26th, 2003, 09:21 AM
Lung- Cheers mate
Hardcore- yeah?? To be honest 3D is something that doesn't interest me.. though one can never really know untill they have experienced it.
Thanks
metalwinds- No man, what you said is completley valid. I agree too. I do think that a bg for that would have made the pic 100% better, because alone as they are its pretty lifeless.
Appreciate the crits alot!

My first attempt on coloured paper. This was looking really good to begin with.. then it got a little worse. The scan is shocking and no matter how I tried the details won't show and it look ultra flat and shite.
http://www.flipmark.com/lukias/images/various%209%20colour%20paper%202.jpg
I scored these wash pencils and used them on the next 4 pages here. Just like standard but one can wash over them with water.. you can even rub out(to a degree) over the wash after its dried and penciling over the wash again creates a real dark, almost pen like quality depending on how dry it is. It dries fast.. use thick paper or it'll warp alot. Think watercolours.
http://www.flipmark.com/lukias/images/various%208.jpg
I really just wanted to test these wash pencils here so did I really shabby sketch job.. hence the lameness. The right hand figure is super gay. I do like the dwarf char though, I think he turned out sweet.

This goes back weeks.. I was going wip this and ask for idea's.. but now I think its too late. This came about cos I was bored and couldn't think of what to sketch. I sometimes used to sketch mutants and the like because you don't have to conform to anything so this allows alot of freedom. This is the result of that. The initial sketch was done really fast, non-stop sketching. The lust for it has gone though I was hoping to put something snazzy on the left. Any idea's??. Plus do you think the babies head should be glowing or not??.

Im here in Germnay.. off to Berlin this Thursday i think.. then to the Netherlands.. I think. Heh.
a collection of doodles I did back in NZ, done when waiting for things to scan or web pages to load.
The slightly larger ones are the actual size of all of them.

!! I had been holding off a reply because I've been wanting to add all my new stuff when doing so.. but so far I have been unable to hook up a scanner + PC that will allow me to get a decent scan with decent adjustments.
(I'm currently backpacking around Europe and getting hold of scanners etc has been difficult)
so no updates, which is annoying but I'll suss something as soon as poss.

Well then!!.. first of all, cheers I.was.ink and metaphysiks, thanks for the comments!
OK so finally and many thanks to Windowlicker(an Eatpoo forum member who I hooked up with here in Stockholm while on my travels) I have got my latest scanned and uploaded.
The scanner I used doesn't pick up all the levels correctly and all the images are over contrasted. In order to even get some of the lighter tones to show I had to beef up the darks therefore resulting on the darks becoming almost ink black(which looks good in some places) and the light shades becoming midtones. It all looks sweet, but I would like you to keep in mind that there's larger tonal ranges on the originals.
Plus only now have i realised that I have made them all too small.. but they arn't too small.. I hope.. well they probably are for you high res users.
I'll show the boring stuff first...
ref sketches:
Pieces from mags that were lying around the place where I was sleeping in the lounge in London.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-ref-1.jpg
We had a spare 15 mins at work(in London), so I sketched one of the lads over a cuppa & a ciggy.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-ref-2.jpg
Did these while waiting for my lift from Berlin to Amsterdam(done a few weeks before the above ones)
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-ref-3.jpg
These were done ages ago I think.. back in Auckland NZ at the zoo... except they don't have horses at the zoo... which is weird
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-ref-4.jpg
These I sketches at the famous Zoo in Berlin.. the Lioness was getting frustrated and went a bit ape shit.. no doubt because of the insane boredom that comes from being in a tiny cage. She gave me a quick head on pose.. I think she was giving me the eye.. the evil eye "What the fuck are you lookin at?"
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-ref-5.jpg
These were sketched at a lake in Frankfurt(before Berlin).. where there was naked Germans roaming with their pink bits all exposed.. oo err naughty. I didn't sketch any tackle though.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-ref-6.jpg
These I did yesterday along side Windowlicker at a park in Stockholm(I really have managed to place these out of order haven't I)
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-ref-7.jpg
PORTRAITS:
I was seriously considering doing street sketching, portraits.. maybe still but i don't think so.. I would have to really get all the stuff necessary and persue it wholeheartedly. Plus I would like to be better before getting comfortable selling any of it.
This was the first serious one i did.. its of my best mates Dave's girlfriend in Frankfurt, Germany. 1 hour.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-portrait-1.jpg
I then sketch her best friend Anni.. she was my special friend for the brief two weeks I was there. 1n half hours.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-portrait-2.jpg
Now I was taking far too long on them and If I wanted to get down to the 30mins required for a portrait artist then I was have to get busy getting faster. So these next two were done in 12 mins(why twelve? just happened that way).
Both were done outside London's National gallery.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-portrait-3.jpg
I got on form after doing the above one, which as you can see doesn't have the same confidence as this one..
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-portrait-4.jpg
I wasn't feeling on form when I did this and the likeness wasn't very good
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-portrait-5.jpg
UNFINISHED
These are unfinished pieces that won't get any more time.
This is one of those ones where I have nothing particular to sketch so just event some random strange shit and let it evolve. A brain fart as some say.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-unfin-1.jpg
Now this actually I wouldn't mind coming back to. I was happy with how it was coming but left it alone. I really like the face, although the tones don't appear right cos of the scanner.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-unfin-2.jpg
The original idea was for some people on a train.. some freaky man thing lazily touching the women next to him and having her head tilted back with her soul exiting via her mouth. Yes all very pleasant I know. But somewhere into it it turned into a scene which appeard to have some strangers indulging in subway intimacy. Like they're all on Extasy and just about to get jiggy on the carriage floor.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-unfin-3.jpg
Heres your classic bare chested man with head bowed, eyes all shrouded and riding a crazy beast.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/sketch-pad-unfin-4.jpg
... OK I've run out of time, I'm being very unsocialable, gotta watch a movie with Frida.
Will post more(quite a bit) with info re each sometime very soon I hope.
Hope you like this.. although I'd like to think that my unposted stuff is alot better.

Great stuff Lukias, I like reading the little commentary by you above the images. The life drawing balanced with the freestyle is great.
What type of work do you do that your able to travel so much? just curious because I think an artist needs to travel and be abLe to see the world and observe, something I really need to do.

Mate this update hasn't finished, theres more stuff coming, even some art purely influenced by one of my inspirations.. Rusty is his name.
(Yeah the only reasons I can justify Zoo's is so people can gain an awarness and appreciation for animals, thereby supporting them in their natural enviroments)

This should have gone up with the other ref pieces..
Twas the day I left home(NZ) the plane was delayed 45mins so what better oportunity than to sketch at the departure lounge. All ref'd except for the girl at top left, thats made up.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-1.jpg
CONCEPT STUFF:
OK these are in almost in exact order of appearance
Various page(the girl was inspired by the ref sketching at the airport)
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-2.jpg
Really wish all these sketches were larger, the definition and detail is lost, especially on the large fella's face.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-3.jpg
Probably one of, if not my favorite face to date(the girl), again, tis a pitty its not larger.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-4.jpg
One of the pieces I do when I want to get expressive, often trying to get accross moody nastyness.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-5.jpg
Playing with heads.. and the occasional mutant.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-6.jpg
MY FIRST REAL CARTOON ATTEMPTS!!
Rusty's work had inspired me, so I thought I try doing something at the other end of the spectrum. The first two were the most fluent(mid top and bottom left) and I sketched both in under 5 mins each(plus a couple more mins for darks and tightening). Cartoons can be fun yaa!
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-7.jpg
These ones are pretty shabby and god that girl head is shite.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-8.jpg
Another Rusty inspired piece, I used my finger to smudge it, then got hold of a smudge stick and worked over it, though my sticky finger had made some bad gradients unrectifiable.

I have several more pages but again I have to go, someones waiting for me, got another movie to watch...

TARGETE- Yeah right now my life is top shelf, best 2 months of my life since I left New Zealand and I consider myself lucky(as should all other artists) to have something I can do with a couple of basic tools. Its a hell of a handy hobby/gift.
Thanks man, hope you dig the different styles I've got coming.
metalwinds- Hey cheers mate, always a pleasure to hear from you
Spacey- My hair... why.. why thank you. Maybe its the aloe based conditioner that I use. It really gives great volume and bounce.

(I damn forgot to write it on the actual page.. well do next time I'm at a scanner eh)
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-10.jpg
WARHAMMER 40,000 influences:
While staying out in West London, there was about 8 people living there, one of the guys turns out to be a Warhammer 40,000 player. You know little hand painted figurines etc..
He has these manuals and what not.. about 25 of them. All n all theres some OK artists but there was about 3-4 stand out guys, some of the work was damn amazing. A couple of the styles had that really hurried, messy energetic style with some overlays of darker defining lines to give it a nice tight balance.
Anyway these next few pages are my attempt in that style. Was a interesting experience, tis nice to go for something a bit different from my norm.

http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-12.jpg
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-13.jpg
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-14.jpg
JSWEET influences:
Jsweets thread got resurfaced and a good thing it did cos the inspiration flowed straight away. I started with the line sketch of the girl(top left) which is in the vein of the work he was posting. I then kinda stuck in that mode though some sketches seem to develop into slightly different styles as I go.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-15.jpg
This page(except for the birds eye of the girl) was all done with a 2H, its interesting and quite different when working in pure light tones. Though because the tones wern't picked up in the orginal scan I had to up the contrast so it appears in a midtone.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-16.jpg
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-17.jpg
One of my first attempts a getting some technical gadgetry into a pic(I remember Lung Bug asking me whether I had done any before), it wasn't pre planned but it evolved this way. I left it pretty messy.. as you can see.
http://biphost.spray.se/windowlicker/Luke/Sketch-pad-18.jpg
Caution.. naughtyness!!!!!! The naked girl was more a test of position/perspective.. she just happens to be starkers.

Rusty- Neh.. but one day I would like to have work that says 'Hire me even though I have no experience'. Yeah I heard ol Peter was doing King Kong, pitty that movie doesn't have tons of trippy monsters in it.. otherwise I'd fly home and get me some work!. Maybe I'll try do a large ape.. but then its just a large ape...
Carrie.. haw! ..or a wife at a dinner party who'd husband is making rude remarks about her in front of the guests for a laugh, shes thinking "One more time darling and I'll cut your penis off"
Cheers bro, Al, falla, Bolsch, Bae ...(insert other NZ slang)
metaphsyics- Wow if you think that these are the best you've seen, then you really need to look around more!!. Some of the best I have seen are the b/w ink pieces on jsweets site.. imagine them in pencil... it makes me moist(and I'm a guy).
Plus I would like to be alot better than this. obviously. I will try make this work look average within a year.
Lung_bug- Great man, best news is to no that I can be an inspiration(and that you save my work). Stoked you like the tech page.. thought of you when doing it.

StephenC- Thanks bud, yep anything done in pencil can pretty much be done in pen, thought if you'r getting tight then pen, as you know, doesn't allow for mistakes. Draw something in pencil.. can ya, I wanna see what results you get?
Jeff Gran- thanks, I will when I can.

I was attacked by mother swan when sketching this, she bit me on the leg twice and hissed at me cos her offspring had gotten too close. I sat my ground mind you... I dont take shit from birds, even if it was remarkably massive. HAW! (you can see some quick baby swan sketches here)

I have checked this thread numerous times in the past but have neglected to ever respond. Your drawings have gotten so much better from the first ones you posted to the newest ones. And I liked the early ones to begin with anyhow. I havent been drawing much recently due to frustration of being at a plateau for what i believe has been a few years now. However, i realize NOT drawing is a surefire way to NOT get any better. Your progress and your drawings inspire me to keep pushing. Thanks for sharing your art with us.

Jnorish - Thankyou
Kaoki- Hey man I know the feeling, when I first encountered these online forums a few years back I suddenly felt pathetic as an artist and nearly gave up. But I didnt an I'm glad for it... so draw harder and fight any urges to give it a rest.
metaphysiks- Cheers bud, alawys nice to have your input
endregan- Hey you noticed my perserverance.. though the amount of work might be a dead give away. Thanks alot
Lung_bug- Groovy man, inspiring others is a real kick, hope you know you do the same for me!
Iiori- Thanks... yeah every now and again its nice to do something a little cute... a breif break from the ugly and twisted.. but only breif.
rubygenesis- Much appreciation Ruby... share the luv:)
Rusty- Best news is to hear that you see improvement.. sweet as al. The horror one was inspired by a horror festival that I went to in Sweden... 8 hours of chainsaws, knifes, screams and breasts. 70's breasts.
Naa I smoke very little weed these days.. it took my 10 years to realise that the buds made me antisocial and afraid of public places. "Why is everyone looking at me.."
Its does however compliment a good dose of playstation. I find the graphics suddenly become way cooler.
TheBlasianOne- Man thanks a whole lot, is a really nice thing to hear words like that... its the sort of thing I need to put on my CV. You make me feel wondrerfull person.... if only;)
I will push my work harder and hope this causes you to do the same.
foster- wickedness... more than I pleasure to have you drop in Jon(Ooo first name basis).
Ouch? Does this mean you will draw even harder an provide pages more of your deliscious sketches?
I hope so!
xia- I shall have more.. I have 40 more pages with me now, though when Ill get a chance to use a scanner and up load Im not sure.
I am in Lyon France but hopefully this week I will be starting life anew in Franfurt, Germany... beginning as a freelance illustrator!!! Fockin aye!

Nope, never heard of him.. just checked some of his work though.. !!! Damn man he¡'s pretty amazing. I¡'m not really sure how you figure any similarities.. but cool none-the-less.

Capt.Harlock ¡V No, thank you:)
Ant4d- Thankyou.. looking over my work, sometimes I'm not sure where the idea¡'s come from either.. I try not to pre-think things, just start with a line and build on it. Maybe that¡'s the key?.
Metaphysics- Damn buddy, stoked you love em so much and believe me, the pleasure really is all mine. Of course drawing is about personal satisfaction but I have to admit, giving others a buzz through it is primo.

Aidan- Thanks alot bud:)
Rusty- Al, the native warrior comes back!. super saiyan¡.. Me no understand you Jas bro. But re you being any less of an artist.. don't be a clown al!! Your trippen if you think so my friend, honestly.
Have you been slacking?. Wheres your goods falla? Produce!!
OK, I got a sepia toned pad(Daler Rowney..sp?) and I like it alot. On my travels I saw the same brand and bought two more, it was always slightly sepia, although each pad is slightly different in grain and thickness. Bummer thing is I cant say I've seen it anywhere else and I'm on my last page. Stink buzz.
. Frezzato, who btw is damn amazing. I went to these art/graphic novel places in France, man they have hundreds of these graphic novels, theres nothing like that here in NZ. Anyway, Frezzato is hands down the best artist I saw after looking through tons of books.. imo. Anyway, yif your familiar with him you'll see some influences through here.
This page got a little smudged.. rubbing against the cover, its a little messy. Frezzato creates really pudgy, eye friendly chars.. so I thought I'd have a go here.

SWEEETTT! I like it when you work in your own style because your better then many people your actually inspired by..but thats my opinion and my 2 cent your stuff is still sweet no matter the style or technique.
You've begun unifying your cast shadows a bit more creating more realism and depth around your form, this awareness is a sign of growth, something we all strive for and your obviously doing.
If I had a huge studio and lots of funds, you would be one of those guys I'd consider hiring as an artist and thats a short list my friend.
PS thanks for the kind comments on my "3 sisters thread" havent had a chance to reply.

Metapysiks- Hey man, honestly thanks a lot for the kind words. Hey the only expensive thing about NZ is getting here, it’ll cost you half the price to do anything else.. so instead of going to Aussie, like a lot of people do.. skip that desert and come here!. I have a site underway.. its been underway for about a year or more!! The guy was.. is .. doing it for free.. not sure whats happening anymore. I want one.. would build it myself but I just don’t have the patience to learn it. Putting time aside for sketching can be hard enough let alone making something that bores the shit out of me. I here they are bloody expensive if you get someone to do it though.
MindCandyMan- Thanks buddy
Endregan- Great to here you making progress and more importantly that your happy abut it. Keep going hard mate. Cheers!
I.Was.Ink- I'm *sure* I wrote about the paper I was using(hint hint). Its slightly sepia, the scanner picks it all and can exsagerate it nicely depending on the scanner levels.. and PS levels.
Cheers man:)
metalwinds- Hey dude:). Yeah I'm playing around with things alittle more, trying not to stick to any one thing and trying not to go crazy on the rendering.. just save that for pics that feel right instead of forcing it. Getting a little messy and discovering new things is what keeps it fun. Robots?. Hmm maybe, but pure mechanical things don't turn me on, I love organic things.. I have started incorporating technical/mechanical stuff into my work a little more(next update has some stuff) .. maybe later as I progress my interest for that will change. We'll see!.
Shalom
jester- Thankyou:)
dilation- Cheers:)
daarken- Thanks alot man.. as you know your painting skills kust blow me away. It has been you who I've been thinking of when I'm doing my first oils.. admittadly you make me feel bad about my abilitys! But it inspires me to get better:)
Main Loop- The only site is this www.flipmark.com/lukias/images
Maybe one day it'll be finished. Maybe. Right here is the best place to view my work. There is an older thread you could dig up if you wanted.. it was about half the size of this current one. Thanks
roger- I can't say I enjoy them either.. cos they're in French!. I wike da pretty picters, which is why I have his sketchbook. Blows me away, great to open up for inspiration.
Cheers:)
TARGETE- Woot! Damn mate, if you ever do run into a hefty sum of money and a studio revamp be sure to remember that comment!. I'd be there in a flash all wide eyed and with a twitching pencil finger. So theres some cast shadow unification??. I like that way that sounds..
"Say buddy.. have you seen my latest cast shadow unification studies?"
No worries re my comments on your paintings, I just wish I could offer something more insightfull. I have just started oil painting, traditional wise. Is frustrating but often fun and rewarding(says I who didn't even finish one in March and will finish one tommorrow). I will upload them when I can.. hope to have your input, yesiree. Cheers mate.
nil- Hey like your "organic" comment.. I like that word(and organics re food.. GE FREE NZ(I did the Auckland march)) and thats something I aim for. Great to see another NZ'r here, they are few and far between.
Art school?. Naa, I'm not aware of anything that sounds really good. To be honest I have never heard of seen anything come out of NZ.. except for Martin Fucking Edmonds, who is known internationally. Want to meet him. Though when I got back from my OE my mum had clipped an article out of the paper about a particular comic artist who stuff is popular with the Japenese. He's in Auckland.. really close to where I used to live, I'm thinking of paying him a visit, he knows the low down on the underground comic scene in NZ(which I didn't know existed untill he mentioned it in the article)
Anyway back to art schools. I can't offer any help there mate, but I never studied in any schools.. I really feel that the guys on these boards know a darn site more than any flakey art teacher would know. If you want to be a good sketch artist, sketch alot.. ref/life etc. Anything you want to know about techniques or advice can be gotten off the web.. having a human teacher of course would be more helpfull when communicating information and physically demonstrating things.. depending on the teacher though. I'm half contemplating getting lessons on painting from a friend of a family friend whos supposed to be really good, though after being whitness to the artwork around here chances are I wont be overly impressed(Cant say I have ever seen a decent, realistic traditional painter in NZ)I think the best thing about art schools as that it gives you an enviroment to to study and learn. But if your happy with having a day job doing something else.. like I did and practising in your free time then do it that way. I saved lots of cash and spent quality time on improving my skills. I didn't have to pay some tertiary institution to learn something I could have by myself. Plus when it comes to art, have a qualification(a piece of paper) shouldn't mean jack.. the proof is in the pudding I say. But dont let that put you off, I have no regrets having not been to one but It probably would have been really cool and I bet if I had done it, I wouldn't have regrets about getting schooling either.
Rusty might know more about school, he's got an animation background.. studied in Auckland I think. Ask him.
Ant4d- No shit?. Your the 2nd person to say they use some of these as desktop images.. that buzzes me out. Honestly, the painting going down on these boards are amazing, If I were you I'd be using those. But hey that stokes me for sure:)

very inspiring.
i like the monster biting on an arm, the alien in the bag, the little cute creature wondering if he can outrun its stalker. i like your interesting line quality, and your very interesting rendering. you convey a mood very well, outside of the obvious content, i can tell if you are drawing to make me laugh or frighten me.
you are very creative and come up with very unique ideas in your sketches, though i request yet again, will undoubtably steal from this depth of expression, i still wonder:
please paint? :p
greak work you have accomplished.

Killing.people- Really appreciate the great feedback man, intrigues me to hear what people take away from these. Ahh the painting question arises. Well, after two attempts at PS I have decided to learn how to paint with oils first, get alteast a basic grasp of things, feel comfortable with the foundations and then apply it to digital. I have finished an oil piece today.. portrait, hope to post it soon. Come back in a while to check up on it:) Seeing as your interested, I'm interested to know what you think. Cheers:)

Lung_bug- Good to hear it mate. I should try the powder again.. like the water graphite pencils I got hold of, I use them a few time and then seem to go back to standard pencils again. Cheers man
nil- White Trash?. Can't say I have seem any work outside of the Illicite label and a few other popular pieces(like an oldschool Shihad poster). Know of any cool links???.
Thanks:)
stephen- No worries you FILTHY .
;)
endregan- A2 is the paper size. A4 is standard.. like printing paper though I think in the US its Letter, which is standard. Anyway, A2 is 4x A4.
I've been drawing since I can remember.. like most I suppose. Been drawing seriously for the last two years.
Thanks alot:)
stormeffex- Cheers :chug:

Yeah I have to start playing with envioments.. thing is I never learnt how to do perspective drawing.. but I'll have to I suppose. hey lukias those are very nice and very advanced in a special way, BUT maybe i´m missing something but to me they all seem like doodles. u sure are getting better at it but i´m not really seing any sort of direction. u are without any doubt talented, but heck i´d hate to see that talent wasted.
to be honest i think u need a mentor or anybody u respect to kick your ass and make you stop doodling around.
doodling and concentrated practicing ain´t the same.
i´ve read several post from you where you gave others very valid and insightful advice. now i´ll try to do that for u.
ask yourself some questions like: "what do i want with my art?", "what things would help my art?"....
well try to avoid routine, what you don´t force won´t happen!
get your ass up and take the world by storm! you can do it! NOW! make real images and post them in "finally finished".
make a dozen. get on the ca frontpage. paint bigass images and have exhibitions worldwide, get a job at massive black or whatever... but don´t hide behind 2875684578 doodles. your to good to do that!
respectfully
daniel.

ever experimented with ethnicities? (that's the closest i could get to a constructive comment)
i agree with dan... these are all nice, but you could focus on something (a project or something). do you work or freelance? if that's the case, just ignore this :)

i think the thing i like most about your sketches is that you use shading more than lines to describe your forms. its a lot more subtle that way.
oh, if you go to the illicit clothing site (www.illicit.co.nz) and look at Martin Emonds profile theres a few covers/pages from his White Trash stuff. its pretty cool, quite Simon Bisley-ish.

Dan v.D-
hey lukias those are very nice and very advanced in a special way, BUT maybe i´m missing something but to me they all seem like doodles. u sure are getting better at it but i´m not really seing any sort of direction
Direction?. Well I was aiming to get better.. better at anatomy, posing etc etc etc, monsters etc.. bit by bit sussing out... bits and pieces.
u are without any doubt talented, but heck i´d hate to see that talent wasted.
Talent wasted?. This is my talent.. I thought.
to be honest i think u need a mentor or anybody u respect to kick your ass and make you stop doodling around.
Well for starters I was never going to get into pro illustration or painting it was something I just wanted to get good at, just because(need there be a reason?). .. and I reckon doodling(as you call it) is practising, aside from ref study its the best practise imo. The reason there is progression is 60% due to conceptualising as opposed to ref work I think.
ask yourself some questions like: "what do i want with my art?", "what things would help my art?"....
Exactly.. I have and do ask myself and now that I have decided that I will try doing freelance work I need to expand. Now I'm teaching myself water colours, oils, perspective drawing, etc
get your ass up and take the world by storm! you can do it! NOW! make real images and post them in "finally finished".
Hey man, honestly nothing I say is meant to sound snappy, because I think its cool that you took the time to write some constructive things. Anyway, I like sketching, alot and up untill only a few weeks ago had I decided that digital was something I was going to look into. I consider sketches 'real' images not a means to an end. If I knew I could get by sketching then I dont think I would ever go digi. I prefer sketch work over colour work 95% of the time. I guess that'll come accross as bias but I still remember being really young and much prefering the b/w Conan comics over anything else(and the artists had better anatomy knowledge I think).
Thanks alot for the feedback and the encouragement, great to see it!. I will post different stuff soon but first there will be more work to post... same as usual.
Lung- Hey man.. yeah I took your advice and have dl'd some ethnic photo's. Will do some study on those. Project??. Maybe.. right now I am painting and sketching, exploring different things so theres alot of new brain food going on. Things are changing.
I want to be freelancing. Just have to get a job!.
CHeers mate.
Ruby- Thanks:) (read above)
endregan- Should have some more traditional painting work sometime to show. Gotta get MUCh better at it though. Its like starting sketching all over again. Thanks man:)
nil- Kiora bro!;) Hey thanks for the link man and yeah Edmonds is obviously a huge Bisley fan unless its just a massive coincidence;)
Thanks:)

Hi Lukias,
time to say once again how much I enjoy your sketchbook. You´ve got a unique style and some of your ideas are simply fantastic. Anyway I would like to see how your experiments with other media are - I can imagine that you´re getting really good at them if you practise.
"I prefer sketch work over colour work 95% of the time. I guess that'll come accross as bias but I still remember being really young and much prefering the b/w Conan comics over anything else(and the artists had better anatomy knowledge I think). "
Amen to that ! I fel like this, too (even if I would substitute Conan by Harold Foster ;))
I really enjoy this sketchbook threads here on CA because I personally think they say more about the persons who are doing them than most finished and refined art I see.
Hope to see more of you and your inspirational work, mate!

nah that didn´t sound snappy cuz tho i absolutely didn´t ment to insult you in any way i kinda expected worse.
its just that my thoughts are usually like three steps ahead of what i see (and more important ahead of what i myself am - maybe the curse of beeing pisces...).
so keep it rocking ur way and don´t let my impatience bug you.

big time admierer,
very great stuff lukias, how do you get your pages to look so aged and the pencil as well??
love the gestural sketch lines that eventually make up your figures, you've got the makings of a master in you, and the work is definatly the cats pajamas...
