EDIT: CHANGE IN ORGANIZATION (SO CHECK ONLY FIRST POST IN THE OLDER PAGES)

Decided to change the organization of my sketchbook a little, for the second time (the first one I removed lots of images because the pages were so heavy and took ages to load).
I will now put the stuff I like more from pages 1, 2 and 3 in the first post of each page. So all you'll have to check is the first post in pages 1 to 3, the last page remains the same for now.

(I wanted to do this for a while, so I finally decided myself. Some old things some are some recent experiments.
I love this forum because I think I can learn a lot here, it is very inspiring and seing some of the posts and the quality of the artists in here makes me want to do something.
Critiques are very welcome.)

Hi Voraz. Good start. It took me a couple looks to realize what some of these pictures were of. I suggest working on proportions just a tad more before you get into detail (i know it's the funnest part!! :))

It all depends on what you're going for, as well, to what advice can be given.. What style are you going for?

You are good with colors.

I'll be back! :)

voraz
July 21st, 2005, 03:38 AM
I, thanks for your comments.
Cobi- about the style I am going for I really don't know, I like to paint and in that I like the impressionists, though I don't think my things are impressionist. But what I relly like is comics, and I don't think I haven't done enough to say I have a defined style, I have never really thought about it, I know are I like but are a lot of completelly diferent things :teeth: .

You've got some nice ideas in here, man. But I'm gonna say it because someone is bound to anyhow... there are some pretty bad proportion issues in here at times. Perhaps some more anatomy and in depth study might help you correct those things. For example, in the last one, her head is far too small or her body to big among other things. And some life studies definately wouldn't hurt. Drawing from life and refin' some anatomy is a fool proof way to improve your stuff. Trust me. It'll help! Keep up the great work ethic.

Zebz said it. I see a lot of anatomy issues here and there. But I love the styles you are experimenting with. Keep rockin.

Hi, Voraz ! Hungry about art, he ? There's a lot of good stuff here, I love your oils and your sketches studies a lot ! <3 But when you draw in a "comic book" way, quality seems lower. good job improving the way you do.. as i was browsing your styff, first i was thinking this guy should focus on drawing way more than on painting and as i scrolled down i saw that you actually did, and it paid off! so yay for that!

now, on a c+c side, it's obvious your reffed stuff is way better than your freehand stuff, so try to understand why things look the way they do when doing refs. study the bone structure and muscle system for example, they'll make your made-up stuff look a lot more convincing.

keep it up!

voraz

Hyver, thanks for the comments and the advice.
Actually I draw much more than I paint and I actually enjoy much more drawing than painting. I used to draw much more but since I went to college I never got as much time as I had before (especially in classes).
Now I think I should use more references and finish more pieces instead of just sketching.
That's what I am trying to do now.

First and foremost, thanks for critting my sketchbook,
secondly, when i browse through the pictures it's constantly a feeling of good-excellent,less good, hmm and over again. My guess would be you spend less time or something like that?

For example, compare the eagle's head against the lion's head. One is a very very powerfull drawing while the other just doesn't work for me.

I'd say, see what u did when u were working on the eagle's head and keep doing that hehe :)

Hi, thanks for the replies.
Comixnut- Thanks again. I am very happy with those monkeys too :D !

Melancholie- Thanks for stopping by, and thanks for your comment on my sketchbook. Yes I agree with you some look a lot better than others which I think it is normal, I do spend some more time in some drawings than in others and many of them are made with different mediums and in the most variate ocasions. Even if that didn't change I guess there would always be stuff ending up better than other.
Anyway most of them are just sketches done for fun and learning without any previous studies.

You show a great improvement from your original post. Your animal stuff looks great. I love that first elephant you posted. The human stuff still seems to be hit & miss. The referenced, and life drawings of humans are looking better and better, but the non-referenced stuff sometimes turn into a mix between anime and western charcoal art.

I have the same problem of overly simplifying the humans I draw when I'm not looking at something for reference. But I am now conscious of it, and try to incorporate things I've discovered when drawing from a photograph, into stuff I just conceive by myself without any references. There is still a huge difference between the stuff I can draw when looking at a picture and the stuff I can draw on my own. It looks like you may be in the same boat. But the more you practice both drawing techniques the more the line between them seems to blur.

voraz
April 26th, 2006, 08:27 AM
Hi, thanks for dropping by and taking some time to leave a comment.
You are totally right with what you are saying and I perceive that difference.
Anyway I guess i will probably never use the same technique when drawing from life or photo, then when I draw without a reference, mostly because what I like to draw most are comics, where they are more stylised and more simplified and not exactelly realistic.
I will sure try to be as reallistic as possible in some kind of exercises, when i want to make portraits that look alike, or when practising in some ocasions where I really want to get the shapes as realistic as possible.
Glad you also see some improvement, I have been working more frequently in the last year (and some stuff, especially in the first posts, in my sketchbook are really old, some are from more than 10 years ago).

Hi Voraz, thanks for the tips. You have a good sketchbook. I see some great muscles studies. Although you don't like the model, he sure got some good muscles definition for study. And the little monkey is really adorable.
The latest animals are looking good too. They make me want to draw animals too.

voraz

Hi Xavvaniv, thanks for your nice words.
About the study above I wasn't complaining about the model itself but from the style of the guy whose work I have used as reference, because I don't like it very much (hope you understand this sentence :dur:).
Thanks, I'm very happy with those monkeys and with this last lizzard also, even though they are very rough studies.

Thank Prophet. Actually there are much less thing i here now, because I removed lots of old stuff, leaving only the pieces I liked more. I had to relieve the sketchbook, it was really really heavy and took lots of time to load. I think now there is less than 1/3 of what was here before.
This sketchbook has been a very effective way of keeping me working as much as possible and keeping me motivated. Since I haven't studied arts, and that i don't work in arts. This sketchbook and the whole CA has kept my motivation to keep on doing stuff (it has also taken many time that I could have used in drawing in painting to just be around in CA, spending here way much time than I should).
Sometimes it is disappointing because I feel i get few replies but then again I just think I'll have to get better and at some point I'll start having more interesting stuff and will get more replies.
That or I'll just join a SSG! :teeth:

This is a sketch I did last night, didn't have much time, I did it in about 20' in my graphic tablet, the main objective was to try and do some good lines in it, but they still come out very funky. The figure in the left had a little more work.

http://img479.imageshack.us/img479/1695/skt17706001upwz1.jpg
Any time you want to ink, just remember (i guess just like in the pencils) about the form underneath. It makes no difference if you are using aball point pen, or a nib or a brush neither! :) So in the head for example, those lines shouls have followed the 'roundness' of the head to give it form. You kinda did it with the arms though so that's a good start. *S* Keep it up man. It sucks that they kicked your bugs out of the finished section but i am glad to see them in here because they rock. Cheers!

Thanks Dile, yes i have to work more in the proportions, I think it comes out allrigth when I use ref, but most of the time I just don't and it notices and I end up doing the same errors on and on... gotta change that!

See the guy in the middle? he looks like you erased all 'classic noob' feelings from th drawing so that he looks really good, proportions as well as the head shape (big noob area is the head). He looks totally different from the other 2 that are flanking him. Whatever you did with the middle guy keep doing it!

Heya.

Try to draw some more from references. Right now many of your characters have very similar poses and almost everyone seem to be heavy bodybuilders with sixpacks. Try to break out of the pattern :)

Looking good though. Keep it up!

Comixnut- Thanks a lot! :teeth:. i'm thinking of some characters for a story, i've been doing that with my 0,3 mm mechanical pencil. I didn't understand very well what you meant with"(big noob area is the head)"- you mean the head is worse than the rest? desculpa lá mas não percebi muito bem... :teeth:

MorteM- I realy got to do that, but these last guys are all for a story I am writing, they are supposed to look like that. Though I have to admit that all the people I draw are too much like bodybuilders, thats what you get from learning to draw from super-hero comics. So thats a problem that comes all the way since i was a kid! Thanks.

some good work, the oil paintings are very nice.

as for your drawings i reckon you need lighten up on the pencil loosen up on the lines and use longer strokes. and try doing each line once. and only once. its hard.

voraz
August 29th, 2006, 11:40 AM
Thanks Tobin. Yes I know what you mean about the strokes, the problem is that at the sketch level I normaly don't get the line i want at first because I'm not too carefull and then I have to correct it with other strokes. Hopefully its something that is corrected when it is past the sketch level, but I'll be paying more attention to that.

I find my self wondering what it would look like without some of the the lines.

Hi, thanks a lot.
That's just a WIP, the lines are there just to place stuff better (I re-drawed after painting to be shure everything is in the rigth place) but they will surelly be disapear, at leat the most of it.

At the moment I reckon your figures could use some more consistency in form/proportions.

Your traditional stuff is great, the cityscapes(?) are my favs. That last figure from life shows a lot of improvement over your other figure studies. Just keep practicing from reference and you'll see the improvements in what you draw from imagination in no time.
Keep it up!

edit: oh, I forgot, those bats are badass!

Thanks for checking out my book man. I see you sketch kind like I do, a little messy here and there. I'll pass on advice I got here which is to watch the hairy lines, don't let them get too crazy. Keep posting!

Hi thanks for the input, about the lines that's true I make them a little messy that's because I am always trying to fix things in the paper so in some places when I don't like it I'll just go over it and try to fix it, I should use an eraser but never could get myself to use one of those, old habits, anyway since they are sketches I don't mind a lot as long as I get straigth lines when I am doing the final piece. Though that is something I am trying to work on: keep the lines cleaner in my sketches.

YO DUDE! Sorry i have been away a little busy and probs with the comp. But no probs now!

And i have to say that i really like what i am seeing man. And that is that your anatomy is improving a lot! And that is a very good thing. Plus you are putting all of that hard work into some action shots. Nothing better in my book i reckon.

Keep it up, rapaz!

Olá PJ, desculpa não ter escrito antes.
Just seen your message now, been out of here (my SB) for a while.
Thanks, i have been trying to focus on doing more dinamic figures after hearing so much about the stiffness of my drawings, also when possible been looking more at references (still need to work more on that...).

here's a quick sketch:

i like the way youve done these (http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/9177/skt191006001so3.jpg), i think the looseness of the bottom and middle one works quite well
