Heya!

How is the exhibit going? Did you get nice responses from people?
I'm really admiring how you make a project (painting) for yourself and stick with it until you spent quite a lot of time on it.. Should do that more myself.

I think you're doing great! figures have improved tremendously, the surfer girl looks hot, and I LOVE the elephant painting ^^

On the last painting my only crit is I think that the water on the top of the image looks too textured, and inconsistent. It's nicely painted around the castle though.. It would be nice if you spent a little more time on the water on the top of the image as well I think. But really nice painting anyways!

Keep it up, and sorry for not stopping by here for so damn long.

Hi Marleen, thanks for passing by and for the usual great critiques :teeth:
Thanks, I think part of the improvement has to due with me trying to use more reference latelly.
About the sea not being as well worked in the top it was intentional, and I do like it that way, but maybe it could be better if it were more worked... I don't know, but the idea was that the center of attention should be the stronghold!

Anyway here's another WIP:

Heya :)
If it was intentional then It's all good ofcourse! ^^
On this last one; looking nice!! I really like how the folds in the jeans are with lines only, and the upper body is more painted.. Maybe it is your intention to paint the pants also, but I kinda like it like this ^^
On the torso: Maybe try to do a little more colour blocking in before starting? It looks like your highlights are a little all over the place on the torso. Nice shape and form though!
I think the left hand might be a tiny bit too small, not sure though, it might just be further away than the rest. Face is looking nice, and arms as well!

Marleen

Hi Marleen, I have considered some of the points you have addressed, especially, the size of his left hand, I also think it may be too small, not very sure, because it is suposed to be further away from the point of view and also slightly tilted... but I will surelly try to fix it until it looks better.
About the jeans I am not sure how I will leave it, I also like the way it is now, but I might experiment a little more on it.
About the painting on the torso, I am also experimenting, I have to say that this pic looks more saturated and contrasted than the original, I am seing that now, so I think that may be affecting the predominance of the highlights.
Thanks again for al the usefull crits :teeth:

#506: Wow this is looking great so far! Really nice skintones on the legs.. Her right calf might be a little too thin though, but I'm not sure, but I guess you might want to recheck that area. ^^ About the top she's wearing: maybe you could draw out the folds and make the darker areas a little darker so it doesn't become too flat in the image?.. Well it's looking completely lovely already :teeth:

#507; Great muscles ^^ Nice drawings, look well proportioned. My only crit: on the face of the lowest guy: the mouth and chin are maybe drawn a little too much towards the left.

#508: Wow! Another exhibition huh? That's a good sign I think? Sketches are looking good too. Good of you to practice faces, I think that is a thing you're having problems with often I think? They turned out quite well, especially the two sideviews I think. Be careful to not make the eyes too big, it is something I see come back often in your sketches, also you sometimes tend to put the mouth slightly too low, but the place of the mouth varies a lot from person to person as well, so it's much less prominent.
On the second sketch (of the woman standing) I think you made the stomach area slightly too short, otherwise a really nice sketch!

Great improvement man :) and congrats again on the exhibitions.
Love
Marleen.

Holy wow! That is an awesome space to exhibit in man! Beautiful!!
The exhibit in the record store looks nice as well, but this is just awesome ^^

The record store is a weird sight for me because it looks so homey and comfy and cosy :) I'm used to record stores being very commercial and busy and full with records everywhere you go. Kinda nice to see such a difference :)

About the latest update: Very nice drawings from life! Well done proportion wise. It looks like you made the forehead a bit short (or area of chin to eyebrows a bit too big), but it seems like you did this consistently so it's probably that her eyes are this high up in the face? :)
On the left (standing) figure I think you made her legs slightly too short compared to the upper body, but also this can be her proportions, so you are the only one who knows how her proportions should be.
I really like how you handled the folds on her jacket and the highlights in the hair.. Nice pencil work!!

Love
Marleen.

Marleen- Hi, thanks it is really a great room. i am very happy, and it is also in a great place at Lisbon, rigth downtown in the city center.
The record store was close to there too 85 minute walk), and yes it is a very calm and relaxed record store, like I said it only sells classical music and fado.
As always good eye, with the critiques, there is some forehead missing of course, also the legs are a little short (not too much though...), I was reaching the end of the paper... :teeth:

Davio- Thanks, I am allready happy that I get to make a exhibit there! To be really great I just need to sell something! :teeth:

Lovely sketchbook, lot of work too! Which is great!
There's still a bit of stiffness in your figures, I think you should work some fast gesture drawings, like 1-2 minute long ones. That would really help the "stiff figure" issue.
by the way, your ink drawings are very beautiful, those are mostly my favorites.
Keep it up! :D

Hey Fil try to keep your eye out for any stylistic leanings you may have when doing your life art (one of the hardest things to do i've found). For me i think i can see 'you' in those faces, which my teachers would probably say that you are being 'lazy'. That is because, i think, you (or me or whomever does this) think you know what is there and draw something that you feel comfortable with already. SO you have to try to really draw what is there.

did that make sense? Good work! ;)

voraz

Anyway, thanks for that list. Some of those are not strange to me, but I didn't knew they were Portuguese. Thanks.

And keep up the good work :)

nice sketching going on. your figures seems in place and emotive. i feel they have a mix of line art and cell shading to them. why not go over to complete mass drawing for a change - see what that could add to your drawing?

September 7th, 2008, 05:50 PM
I really like those last two! Your drawings are really improving with each life drawing session - keep it up! The last drawing especially seems a lot more alive - I think because the way you've applied your tones is a lot more sparse and considered - the drawing just before it doesn't seem to have the same thought to it. The actual contours aren't as tight as your other drawings but the tones bring it to life. For me anyway!

Hi, thanks for all the comments!

Pantless wanderer- Thanks! the list is updated!

Eparts- Thanks a lot! Could yu be more specific about the ones you feel have been coloured by cell sahding? I don't normally use that technique...

Thek- Thank you very much for the nice comment! Actually I have been trying to keep stuff a little thighter than I would usually do, most of them were drawn with a 0,5 mm mechanical pencil. These last ones though I tried to keep it loose, especially the last one that was done with charcoal. Actually with that medium it would be impossible to keep things very tight.

here are some more drawings from those sessions:

A lot of the heads are too big! Adults are usually about 6-7.5 heads tall, and the shoulders are normally 3 heads wide. Nice drapery in the last picture though. Also, try loosening up and drawing people in hundreds of different poses. You don't want them to be too static!

voraz
December 27th, 2008, 05:55 AM
Hi, eminkey, thanks for the critiques, the static poses are recurrent, also that thing about the heads being to big I have been doing that a lot latelly, have to be more carefull! this last page is full of big heads!

Studies studies studies! Use posemaniacs or anything else to train yourself to draw dynamic poses, fill pages with little 2 mn figures, before thinking to make complex clothes etc. You think too much about rendering and details before the basics shapes to be solid!
Of course you can continue to sketch some characters of yours, but you wil improve so very much faster if you make some studies and train your hand to draw natural poses and correct anatomy!
Don't give up! :)

You are improving my good fellow.

I really like the drawing from life i higly recommend you go along with those has much has you can they are never enough, focus more on gesture drawings more than actually rendering you details like clothes face etc.

Start at the basics and only when you have them tamed and understood you can move onto something more complex.

Nice stuff, keep on going.

Haven't had much time to be around CA latelly, excpet for posting, actaully haven't had much time to draw and paint at all, except for the sketches done during classes that I have been posting.

This has to do with haveing my spare time occupied in the preparation of a comic, together with other local artists.
So basically I have started this project and have been organizing it. I have called it Zona, and the first issue Zona Zero (means Zero Zone) is out.
It was launched here at Portugal for now, but maybe I'll do an international number in the future using a POD system.

You can check some information about it at:
ZONA (http://zonabd.blogspot.com/)

Though it is in Portuguese...

Anyway here is the cover wich was done by me:

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude, there has been some serious improvement since last time I was here! (I'm still subscribed, but I haven't been in here for way too long.)

Your faces and human figures look so much more natural and confident now. I like that "hard" pen style you've got going some places. And the pencilwork in #645 is nice. Zona cover looking brilliant. The background in particular is gorgeous. Lot of praise for you here, not so many crits. But you deserve it, you've obviously been working hard!

What's the comic about?

comixnut
June 24th, 2009, 06:34 PM
yeah that cover is pretty cool! I was impressed by the comic book scene in portugal last time i went there and it looks like you are adding to it Fil! Keep it up man. Experiment with the type of line you use for your finished and sketches work as well.

voraz

Hi Hai, thank you very much for the nice words. Actually to tell you the truth I have been working very little and as I said in the posts, except for the cover, those are mostly sketches done in classes...
The difference is that with the stuff done for the witty rpg online game, in which I have worked more carefully, using a rubber, correcting some lines, try to build it better from start, sometimes doing more than one sketch, but yeh they're still sketches done more carefully.
My free time as been more taken up on producing the Zona Zero (http://zonabd.blogspot.com/) book, it does not have a specific theme and includes work from several authors, illustration and comics. maybe in the future I'll do a English version and put it a POD site...

I am preparing a new one though, in which the theme is TERROR. At the moment I'm looking for illustrations and comics to include there.

Comixnut- Thanks a lot, I do hope this will add something to the scene in Portugal. Good luck with your 365 challenge, I check you thread once in a while but haven't had much time lattely to post here in CA, I mostly try to keep my sketchbook running...
