Infin - glad to see you starting a sketchbook.
You are already getting known for some fantastic ideas, and for being a unique thinker on this board. OK - so you should be famous and rich in 6 months from now..
Well - not yet my friend! Here's what ya gotta do -
Study drawing - study art - and most importantly - study life.
I don't know if you even have access to a life drawing class, but if you do enroll now! Are you in college or planning to go?
Taking a life-drawing class will help you to develop your craft.
You have a great mind working up on top of those shoulders of yours....with interesting visions (that I feel would be great for a career in conceptual art)- Now you just to communicate these ideas with strong visuals...and that means strong skills.
- Keep this sketchbook going...it'll be your best friend

Hey Infinitum,
:) good start.. I agree with Loomer, he's made some good points. Also what Vigostar suggested elsewhere, study from life apply in your work. :) Grab and pencil and a sketchpad and draw heaps. Also for painting in PS, try to stick to hard edge for the moment.. Air brush look can really stuff things up quickly. Keep going!!
cheers,

Thanks Loomer, that means alot to me. I finished college nearly a year ago now. (thats uk college which goes from 16 to 18. Not sure if it's the same in the US.) It was a two year fine art diploma, and as part of it I did a couple of hour's of life drawing a week. However since then I haven't drawn much from life. I Agree that I need to do more of this. I hope to get some sketching done today, so i'll post what I have later.
Thanks for you're comments too Bumskee. I am trying to improve my ps skills at the moment but I don't have much opportunity to. I don't have a computer at home powerful enough to run photoshop so I can only do these at work. (You can imagine what they think about me using their computers for it, but hey.)
I'll post some more as soon as I can.

Infinitum, good to see you drawing. :) the sunnies look very good. The anatomy needs lot of work, your lines lack confidence, your hands are too small, the gestures too stiff. The one on the bottom is your best, the form reads well. Have you looked at some of loomis books? I am sure you have, it's a good place to start and also keep up with drawing from life too. I guess it's all about drawing and training your eyes to see the important stuff. So keep going!!

Thanks Bumskee. I'm trying to really focus on anatomy at the moment so I should have some more to show soon.
Believe it or not I've never seen a loomis book anywhere. I've heard they are really good but I can't find any.
Also here's an image I meant to post earlier.

These aren't the real, full versions. Someone along the way published some pages from the larger books..but it's cheap and they are still well worth it.Loomis books (http://budplant.com/product.asp?pn=HOWALSET)
Bridgman...I've actually learned more from Bridgman...This book is also a good price for what you get inside.

I like that little environment you posted. The windmill might be a little large if it is receding into the background like that - I dunno...something about it I find very pleasing to look at

I better look into that bridgeman stuff too. :P

Thanks both of you for the Loomis links. I'm going to try and get one of those Bridgeman books. They look good. Some pdf's of Loomis's work would be great Bumskee if you can find them.
I'm glad you like the village picture. It was very peaceful and relaxing to draw. I agree that the perspective is a bit off, but I drew it straight out in biro so I couldn't change it.

infini glad to see your posting some work.. those books those guy reccomended are great.. they will help you immensely.. just be patient... I would give you one crit on the anatomy studies.. when your drawing anatomy try holding your pencil or pen where you cant have a tight grip n the pencil, so that it stays loose in your hands... try not to pick up the pencil or pen very often as well. try making the proper decisions from the beginning... Really anazlyze your subject well.. if you can (if its from a photo I mean).. when your drawing from life you have to work fast so you really dont have much time to think its more hand eye coordination... Keep up the good work.. the glasses look very good.... and the horse looks like its the start of something really nice.. keep at that one.. make it your "im going back to this drawing and work on it lilttle by little.. in between projects and so on....

Thanks Vigostar. I'm going to try your suggestion about holding the pencil loose. I like the horse as well. It was done as a quick demonstration of digital painting to someone. I agree that it could do with a bit of development.

Hey. :) nice update. As for pen drawing, I think it's about NOT drawing just as much as drawing all the details. Also take sometime into hatching or cross hatching for shadows, you have some good concepts, don't be sloppy with details take your time and come back if you get bored, like your last landscape drawing.
I really like the armoured bus concept, very boxxy reminds me of the tank in ALIENS. Elephant is looking great!! wish I could do animals like that.. :P
The bike, I think you rushed it too much, the wheels look a bit sloppy. :) Had any luck with anatomy stuff yet? Vigostar will be giving out weekly assignments soon, that will be fun and keep all of us on track. :)
Good going and keep drawing man!! :)

Thanks for the comments Bumskee. They were all a bit rushed apart from the elephant. It's been crazy for me the last few days, so I haven't had much time to do more finished drawings. I'll try and revist these concepts later.
As for anatomy, the same applies really. Not enough time. But I should have some soon. It's something I really want to focus on.
I'm looking forward to the weekly assignments. I think it will make us all focus a bit more and hopefully really bring us forward.

hey, infini- those sketches are relly coming along well.... i like the truck comcepts.. If I were yo would I would check out some of the guys on this forum that sepcialize on thins like cars.. another great guy is CHIP FOOSE.. that guy is amazing.... really teaches you alot about design.. on the anatomy i really like the skeleton stuff.... I would keep it up.. Try not to look so sktchy.. Always remember to try and use the less lines as possible... It seems like your be very sketchy and going over your lines quite alot.... makes it looks messy.... nice fluid curves.. Practice going over the same line without making a new one... controling as mush as possible while staying loose.. its hard i know but with lots of practice you'll get there in no time.... you have a great imagination.. just keep on working hard...

Vigo said some good stuff. Glad to see you are pursuing the anatomy angle. Remember...you don't have to memorize every little name of every muscle strand...remember big parts. The more you know the better (of course),,but learn the essentials.
Your proportions on the 'spiderman' figure drawing are actually pretty good..except his left arm is way longer than his right. When shading...or more importantly...describing form..Look for the big shadow shapes first. Seperate your subject into light and shade...then go back and worry about the midtones.
You are doing everything right man...keep it going bro!

Hello comrad,
Keep on sketching....I'm with loomer on your work habits...just keep going and the necessary skills will come in time. Get that drawing mileage down and you will be rockin'. You might want to spend a little more time on your pieces...seems like most of them need more effort put into them. Keep up the good work.

Hey Infi, Good to see you going to the basics man!! good good, keep it that way for a while.
The second ones, I assume those are the ones you created? the groin is around the middle of the figure, so keep that in mind, the first figure's legs are too short, the arm should sort of just go past groin, it's almost to the knees. Good weight and balance though. the other two as well, watch the proportions and weight distribution. Really good to see you drawing and going for the basics, it's kinda boring but it will pay off real quick! :)
Keep going dude!!

that dagger and the little boy running are very cool indeed.... i think your skeletons need more fluidity.... even though their skeletons... try drawing with a crayon, watercolor, or something thats not as natural to you as pencil... something that make it impossible to erase... keep on going... yur doing great... gonna check in that kitchen comp now!!!

hey nice progress.. what size paper are you using for these??? are you using magazines for ref??? if so i think you should try and defiant from that and use some shots that are closer to the eye so that you can better see whats going on with your model... your lines have improved 10 fold which is awesome.. right now I could say that the first drawing needs some darker darks to give it some pop! the horse is excellent.. very nicely done... other then what scott said about it I dont have any crits... Maybe u could have used a different color for the background and ground.. but thats just personal taste... nice update..!

Loomer - Its gouache (i'm not sure if that's spelled right) I see your point about the leg but I kind of liked the way it looked so I left it as it was.
Bumskee - Thanks for your comments. I got the idea for the Amazon from a second hand book I found about the amazon area. I'm glad you like it.
Vigostar - These are both done on A4 paper. There is no reference for the figure shape on the amazon, but I did use some for the tattoo. I used some reference for the horse. I agree that the amazon could use some darker darks. Its a bit greyed out at the moment.
I'm glad you can all see an improvement. I should have some new updates soon.

hey ian.. glad to see that you have been working hard... you are def. going in the right direction.. the only thing that im going to crit on is that castle structure thingie... when your working out a drawing like this (and I have tons of trouble with drawings like these) you have to remember to think in terms of size (as it relates to its background), structure ( does the structure look like its about to fall and break in two, perspective and 3 diminsionality... this is what makes structures work... even in the most unbelievale structures that you may see certain artist design.. that strucure is usually accomodated with similar structures or background to give it realism... Well... im glad to see that your back in business now... keep on posting

Ian - glad to have ya back. Shit..I'm glad to be back too...been sick, then away from my computer for 4 days.
First..your work is always improving..and you seem to be going in the right direction. I must admit, I'm a little surprised to hear you are putting a portfolio together to get freelance work. Not that it's a bad idea...I just assumed you were going to concentrate on refining your skills and craft. Of course...any artist ..professional or not..always tries to improve.
From what little experience I have (and this concerns Illustration portfolios..not conceptual art portfolios) and art director would rather see 8 amazing pieces than 20 mediocre images. Really put some blood an sweat into this portfolio. Time isn't everything, but keep a mental note.." How many hours did I put into this...? 4...20..40?" The work will show. Worry about speed and production later...it's all about quality now. Good luck man..can't wait to see what you post next

September 28th, 2005, 01:51 PM
Hi Loomer, I'm sorry to hear you've been sick. I hope your ok now.
I'm glad you like my work and think it's improving.
About the freelancing, I have been working as a designer for the last six months and wasn't intending to go freelance for a while yet (though it's always been my ultimate aim and dream). However events at work kind of speeded things up a bit. I just had to leave, I couldn't stand being told what to do. I can work with people no problem, but working FOR someone is something else.
I'm always trying to improve my skills though. I know that my skills need alot of work. However I do believe that I can do this. I just hope that I am good enough to get started and then I think I will learn things very quickly. But like I said this has all happened faster than I planned, but I think it is a change for the better none the less.
Thanks for your advice on my portfolio. I need all the help I can get so it is much apprieciated. I'm going to work really hard over the next few weeks to get some work that is of really high quality. I will post them here so crits will as always be very welcome.
Thanks again.

Cool Ian - I didn't mean it as a swipe at you or anything..don't get me wrong. I think you are really talented, and your brain is full with sick ideas. I have no doubt you will succeed...
of course even the pros on here need to improve...we all do
I just know you are so young and I thought, "if this guy has his youth maybe he can buy some time and just work on his craft for a bit"
But you gotta do what you gotta do - and sometimes that pressure is the best motivator.
just to clear that up - I know you'll be fine!
Infinitum
September 28th, 2005, 02:18 PM
Thanks Loomer. I didn't think you meant anything bad, but thanks for clarifying it anyway. I'm glad you think I can do it. I was intending to use my job to buy me some time, but thinks just didn't work out. However i've used the money I made from that to pay for setting up freelance so it was worth it from that point of view. And also I wouldn't of met you guy's if I hadn't used their internet, and knowing you guys is great!
As for the pressure, it is definitly the best motivator. When you look at your bank account and see only money going out it really gets you to work more.
I have got one job lined up though, and its fairly long running. But if you know of any good places apart from here to find any freelance work I'd be grateful to know about them.
Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Hey Ian. :) sup dude nice set of updates, those characters are coming along nicely, nice job with Vigo's character. love the pose and the shiney pants. :)
Some crits? your pencil makrs are getting a little messy, when rendering a form, it's all about finding the planes and keeping those values. try and draw with clean simple lines, zagged lines can make things messy very quickly.
Good going with the train sketches!! :)

Bumskee is right with the pencil marks...But what I think would help is taking a look at some anatomy UNDER the skin...muscular system and skeletal system. If you can, get a good anatomy book (there are 1,000 posts on this site about which is best) or visit sites with good anatomy: www.saveloomis.com, or www.fineart.dk ....

Bumskee - Thanks for the nice comments. I see what you mean about the lines. Vigostar said something similar a while back, "Thunderlines" he called them. I am going to work on those to clean up my drawings.
I'm glad you like the train sketches. I don't often get the chance to draw people like that. And the woman reading the book really did look that grumpy.
Loomer - I'm glad you are seeing an impovement. I was pleased with how these characters came out. Good point about the anatomy. I have been drawing from alot of ref for the recent ones. I think I will have to go back to looking at the muscle structure like you suggest. I've got a commplete set of loomis books that Min found for me so I will go through them.
Thanks again both of you.

Hello, Infinitum :). You are posting rarer than other artists but from your work here I can see very beautiful style already and maybe I wrong but I feel you already know what you want to do in art and what are your preferences. You do a lot working in many different directions at same time. So I think you have very organized mind and unusual artististic vision.
The most appealing work for me are:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/New5.jpg I like the colours, washed up effect, gentle textures, the whole delicate mood. The horse has very soft obedient eyes. I feel for it.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/Image10.jpg
Looks like a little fantasy ( fairy tale) village in peaceful time.. Kind of strangely quiet without its residents though :).
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/Elephant1.jpg
It has a weight and calm mood. Besides after loomer's elephant swing I have a thing to elephants :).
All your cars are a pleasure to look, great construction and perspective. Wish you would add colors and shining.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/WomanPortrait1.jpg
I like this portrait a lot, very truthful face expression, like she heard some very much needed information and is getting deeply involved. like just getting in there, not totally excited yet. So it's a very rare catch, very fine hard to nail emotion. Tells a lot about your talent.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/RockCity1.jpg
Very airy, pleasant to look.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/PostApocalyptic1.jpg
I just like it, soft watercolor effect.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/Annihilator.jpg
That's a very much alive painting. It has illusion of weight, motion and sounds of his heavy feet.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/GoldenMonk2.jpg
That's the very first example of your own original style. Your own choice of bright, very definite, clear colors, very definite, clear lines and characters, very reserved, introvert kind of people with strong independent nature. That goes for all characters for sketchling group, except lommer's guy. He is strange and different, totally misfit and very confused poor soul :). Or maybe he didn't drink anybodies blolod for much to long. I feel for him too. :)
Entry for last CHOW is great, I like him a lot. Very strong personality who can be very angry and intimidating sometimes. Strong colors help a lot to establish this character. He is his own man. Very nicely executed and pleasant to look fantasy costume.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/Damagedmech1.jpg
This is my favorite The pose is very natural, even though he is a robot. I like coloring, textures and smooth manner to draw. He has a mood too. I think he is kind of lost too. May I take him with me?
Ship concept is great too and entry for the thunderdome challenge.
So thank you, Infinitum,
Sveta Dudetta

Sve - I've been posting rarer because i've been really busy trying to get going as a freelance. Yes you are right that I do broadly know what I want to do and what my artistic preferences are. The hard part is doing them and getting somewhere. I'm working on lots of different things because I am trying to build up a balanced portfolio. If you could see my room you wouldn't think I had an organized mind, but thank you for saying I have unusual artistic vision. I appreciate that, even if it is probably higher praise than I deserve yet.
I love your insights into the images. You always look very deep into the pictures and see so much. Sometimes you see just what I intended and sometimes even more. You often make me think of things that I hadn't thouhgt about before, so thank you.
I'm glad you like the robot. You are free to take him with you as long as my name goes with it. I think he would like a change of scenery.
Thanks for stopping by Sve and thanks for your comments.
By the way have you had a chance to look at my portfolio yet. I could do with the feedback.
Thanks.
Loomer - Thanks Loomer. I'm glad you like the Brewery bot. It's for a thunderdome challenge but it's all gone quiet there so I don't know whats happening. Thanks for your comments as always.

Oooh nice elephant, long stuff like that can really develop your pencil skills. Stick with the loomis studies and taking all the information from his books.
I prefer the charectors with interesting backgrounds, to the plain. Even try grey out.

Hazamataz - Thanks for looking through my sketchbook. I,m pleased you like the elephant.
I agree about the Loomis books In the new year i'm planing to print them out and work right through them.
Loomer said the same about the characters needing backgrounds. I've changed the ones on my portfolio page but it is something I need to work on more I think.
I'm glad you like my name. Your's is pretty cool as well.
I've finally found time to update. It's been really busy in the run up to christmas, but I wanted to get this update in before the new year.

Hello, Ian! Was great to wake up today and see your thread with new update. I enjoyed it very much. These ones I think especially appealing:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/Soldier3Medium.jpg I especially like the combination with this dark red ( I would call it the color of dried up blood, and exactly this association adds something to the character. He looks bloodthirsty. And in the same time he looks funny and not a big trouble to deal with. I can tell why. Because I see those things on his shoulder as some trusting him bird or handful monkey. Yeah, I know, it's probably just a part of his armor, but I saw it the other way from the first moment. I kind of with you refine him more, with many little details, I like his pose and figure very much.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/sketch2copyMedium.jpg
I like this strange portrait. For me it's like modern version of old masters work. The hairdo is weird and I like to observe it.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/FearofthedarkcopyMedium.jpg
I love this piece, I think it's great. I'm kind of surprised after our discussion about the theme, but I love how you did this one, Very, very precise emotion, great shadow from the window, fear in his eyes, and the idea that we, viewers don't see what cause all this. And I like that the child is in the middle of the darkness, sitting alert in his bed, like on the island, surrounded with fear. Such a great catch of the emotion. And I can relate a lot, I was afraid of the creature, who has been emerging every night from the silhouettes on the rug near my bed. Never told my parents, couldve been saved long time ago :).
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/CreatureSketch1copyMedium.jpg that's a beautiful image. From an imagination? I like the pose and these red glowing hair.

Hi Sve, I'm glad I gave you a good start to the day. Thanks for your comments. Very deep and incitefull as always.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/Soldier3Medium.jpg I see what you mean about this one. I was just playing around really, trying a new ps brush. I like the idea of the monkey or bird on his shoulder. They are supposed to be sort of fuel tanks or something at the moment but I might change them to a monkey now. I think I will refine him when I get the chance. I've only spent about 15 minutes on him so far so I think he could use some more time.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/sketch2copyMedium.jpg I'm glad you like this one. I was just doodling last night in photoshop and I kind of liked how it came out.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/FearofthedarkcopyMedium.jpg I'm finding the fear challenge really hard to get into and I have gone through many ideas. I've finally settled on my first one now. So don't worry i'm still doing the one we talked about. I this one is a theme quite a lot of people can relate to, most children have a fear of the dark. Most adults as well in certain situations. But like thay say, "a problem shared is a problem halved".
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Infinitum1/CreatureSketch1copyMedium.jpg Yes this one was totally from my imagination, just a quick 15 minute sketch in photoshop that I was kind of pleased with. I'm glad you like it.
Thanks again for your comments. I apprieciate them.

Hi everyone. Here is my entry for the chow one month challenge, Puppet Master & Puppet.

Some time in the early 23rd century robots finally became advanced enough to allow battles to be fought remotely. The pilots of these robots became known as the Puppet Masters, and their robots the Puppets.

Good work anyway !!

As for the colab it is an evolving thing. With all of us working on it it makes it difficult to get things unified. But as it goes along hopfully we will get a more focused dirrection for it.
Thanks for droping by.

Hello, Ian :). Happy to see your back, Hope you and your family are feeling better.
I wrote about our shared image, I like some of the effects, contrast and silhouettes far out. But really think it's a crazy image already. Make me giggle imagining Min sitting and looking what to do with it. I was extra restless doing it. :).
Love the both vehicles, they are done in two different styles. The first is very realistic one. Wonderful 3D illusion and and textures and lines. Awesome image. As a note I would add that the white outlines in the shadowed plane look a bit too light and making this side of the vehicle looks a little flat. I got this comment in my thread, that the lightest value (even a reflection light) in the shadow area of the object should always be darker then darkest value in the lighted area. Shortly put the values in the shade are always darker than in highlights. Now in your image they look a bit to light, and, in my opinion, it is confusing to eyes. But it's not a big confusion. The image looks great and very interesting for viewer, because of the textures and lines, I think. Good volume too.
The race car looks very nice, love the colors and the highlight, how you did it, very nice. I just wish you added the core shadow too, the darkest shadow on the image, besides cast shadows, where the form is turning. It will make the image even more protruding from the picture, I think. Right now the part with highlight looks awesomely 3D, but the shaded one looks a bit flat.
I repeat, the golden highlight is beautiful, very clever use of colors, in my opinion.
Good to see you.

Hey, Ian, very beautiful stylish work. Interesting, you did them all in one style, was it on purpose? There is definitely some story which combines all the characters.
My favorite are the knife from the page 3, very nice smooth figure and textures, outfit, armor are beautiful. I like the next to it portrait, although the face is very simplified. The expression is nice, deep in thoughts.
And I like the following character a lot, beautiful face and figure and very expressive pose and eyes, like she is tense and ready to act. the hiding hand, well it could be foreshortening, but it does look a little short.
Overall, great characters and style.

hey, ian.. looking great here.. i really like that angel piece... I would either make the bg darker or lighter from the character to bring her out and make more of an impact... Remember that when you work in B&W all you have in your tool box is contrast, and range of tones... also, create some more darker areas where your character sits... maybe its on the ledge or some areas around the body.... keep up the great work..
