Thankyou AndrewLey, Olsen, and FlaskPost, you have no idea how much it means to me that I'm getting feedback.

I decided I need some more work on my characters and humans and all that, so heres a couple pics until I can find my damn digicam and photograph my larger work:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v292/quicksketch/magegegege.jpg
This is my concept for a different kind of mage. Instead of using a staff or wand, he's enchanted these giant bracers/gauntlets.

And some digital work (painted with a mouse...need a friggin tablet...) It's just a close up of his face that I reworked and I hope to color. Still need to finish it

haha yah where's the mallows?! thanks for the comment. i like your all your latest stuff a lot! especially the guy on #12 and inspiration. really thourough. it's tilted about 2 degrees clockwize though.
did you get a tablet or still using a mouse? i thinks the second one is better because it is less sketchy those marks in the first one are too random and don't help to describe the form. the rock on bottom left of the first one is great tho, real strong. i thingk if you put that one on the second pic and toned it down to match the rest in hue and vibrancy. and clean up the left most rock with it's scribbles. those are really good by the way.

Your pen bursting at the seams with everything you love to draw is easily my fave. Loads of great contrasting line values and tone teamed with a real zest of activity.

Although your life drawings are well toned they still seem a bit stiff on the page. I think it might be because when you've drew them you've used an outline and then drew to the outline. The result is that they look a bit cut out and stuck on with nice sharp outlines and varying tonal values everywhere else. This is very familiar to me because I used to do the same thing at school as well! What I suggest doing is using a light pencil to draw a three dimensional representation of your object and then you can build your tonal values across the whole of the object at the same time rather than working your way up/across.

Hope you can post some stuff more regularly in future and I'll look out for it.

Yeah, I'm liking the bust painting with tempra. Its great because you don't seem so concerned with the clearness of the your line. But in after thought There might not even be anything too apparent about the starkness of lines if you put them against something other than a white backdrop.

When you draw a line remember it is definitely going to cause a shadow of some sort somewhere. The shadows give every individual line depth. You're shadows seems a bit clear cut and so your bust is really refreshing because it totally shows what kind of stuff we're going to see you doing in future.

Great progress quick_Sketch!!

What i could say is:
Go on with that still life sketches
do some anatomic studies (you heard of loomis?) if you wanna progress the same way like with you objects

About that apple, the bottom is great but the upper part shows some mistakes in shading (although it is possible that such kind of apple exist)
but do a b/w shot and see the right values!!

Go on, you are on the right way!

Eytan

Thanks for the comment Xaya, I'm pretty sure you're right about that apple, then again it was made outta plastic so who knows. Yes...anatomy is my enemy, but I start taking a figure drawing class on the 6th so I will post all my drawings no doubt.

I got inspired by some of Marko Djurdjevic and Wes' pictures so I sat down and did some heads with some cool costumes, I rather like them:

Oh man I'm really kind of angry with my self.

So I started doing a character every day starting on monday so that I would get used to designing things quickl. That character above was the first one and tonight was guy #2, which started out awesome and then I fucked him up, see for yourself.
the start:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v292/quicksketch/brrrr.jpg
and then i overdid everything and it sucks:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v292/quicksketch/brrrr001.jpg

either way ill be updating tomorrow night with character #3

Your concept work is becoming so much more coherent and readable. Line quality improving similarly. I don't want to seem a Greg but do many more portrait and figure studies from masters or life. Try copying a single portrait a number of times and then reassembling from memory without the reference. Really push yourself to naturalize your forms (I don't know too much about developing as a concept artist but I'd think that you'd have to work to convert any fine arts understanding into stock structural seeing). Experiment with the relationship.

Great improvement Akon. Your forms are becoming really solid. Funny how Otis has you drawing robots before flesh. selfportrait looks like you, too. I feel that watercolor gives you a very good sense of color (as you have to make things work, no correction like oil or plastering like acrylic). Use it for anything (still life and portrait first off, I'd say). However, use it loosely. I prefer quick work but some rendered wash drawings are good foundation (I have to be doing these). I've been painting at home and VAI (you should recognize the sculptures in the last watercolor). Visit.

Jens
February 19th, 2007, 07:38 PM
mayby you should try using more organic shapes for those selfportraits, I mean you're blocking in this geometric structure, and while the head can be simplified in these easy shapes in reality it's more complex. Look in the mirror and try finding one straight line in your face. Just keep those shapes in the back of your head while drawing, and don't draw anything unless you see it.

Of course they mayby teaching it this way at your school :) Then I'll shut up :D

ahh your gestures kill me. they're so nice. and this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=94678&stc=1&d=1171613334) is awesome. for the sp's you have the gesture and proportions and perspective down pat, but you're not getting the actual shape. try getting the gesture down and then draw the contour i mean just the edges. glad you're posting more.

I think that you gave his neck too much texture - too many deep wrinkles, each with the same set of shadows and glowing parts. You should maybe unify parts of it to make other parts pop out :) Anyway - interesting creature and the progress looks good so far :)

Eytan
January 11th, 2008, 02:08 PM
Thanks Thirdeye! I definitely wouldn't have noticed that. Wish I saw your comment sooner. I'll have to fix that for the next update.

Ok firstly...I went from your July, to your Dec. post thinking...is this the same persons work?? haha. in those months you have gotten marginally better.

What did you study mostly at the school your attending? I love the latest characters. One thing thats looking funny to me is the shell - it looks so round, but not attached to his body. Look at how much of his back we can see under his front arm. I wonder if showing how it attaches would look more proper? Nice light sources though. Hmmm I may have also given him a different stomach, different texture/color than the rest of him in some way? now that your back, keep posting sir

Farvus
January 11th, 2008, 06:31 PM
With every update it looks like your level of skill is on another higher step. All the studies definately pay off. I like this alien head sketch.
My only suggestion would be to pay more attention to variety of line thickness in perspective drawings. Thin lines for smaller deitails, lighter/more delicate objects, further objects, light side. Thicker lines for general shapes, heavier and closer objects, shadow side, accents. These all are guidelines but might help in making pic look more 3d and interesting.

Keep it up!

Eytan
January 16th, 2008, 03:05 PM
Heya everybody, sorry for the delay. Some more work on el turtle, sketchbook pages coming soon!

Jakers- thanks for the encouragement, though i hope you know marginally means in the least bit, =D . Yeah your crit said what i was thinking, decided to nix the shell, and add turtle like armor. Hope that works. Right now im a sophomore at Otis College Of Art and Design, studying in the field of digital media which is basically anything needed to make a movie or a game art-wise; concept art (which is what im doing), motion grahics, 3d modeling, 3d & 2d animation, and visual fx. Its an amazing program, and its the sole reason i'm going to otis. I highly recommend it.

Farvus- Thankyou man, thats a great suggestion. I like that alien head too. keep them crits coming!

THINGS TO WORK ON:

Neck wrinkles

Consistent red light source

Fabric on the closer arm

Redesigning the Sword

Hands

Pants

For crits I would sugest you took a look at the reptiles jacket it hangs really strange around his right arm. And also it looks as if it disapears into his armpit the way it folds around his breast muscel. Good luck with the piece!

Woh bloody sweet update! I would say make the closest forearm a bit larger, and give him a bit more emotion in his face - I did a character recently that could have had a lot more presence if he had more expression attention (woh wasnt that catchy!). The way he is holding onto his weapon with his right arm feels quite weak...rotate it more and have more of the fingers visible?

yehuda
April 7th, 2008, 10:47 PM
Hey man,
Sweet ape. Maybe if you tilted his weapon one way or the other a little. Now it looks kind of like he's presenting it to me. Really digging the fur and the face. I'm not about to mess with that monkey.

Really impressive range of stuff here man, youve kinda shown the way a bit and exposed some areas that im seriously lacking in!

In your environments and things how much are you using photo overlays and things? - I ask this more out of curiosity as you get a lot of nice noise going on and thats something I think I could do with in my failed environments. And more of a personal preference when it comes to presentation i think your images would look better if they were say 3/4 their current size... as they do an awesome job of capturing the atmosphere with the forms / shapes but sometimes the actual detail is lacking.

Anyway, less chitter chatter, ive gotta start filling in the blanks and catching the fuck up! Keep rocking out with the good shit.
