I've almost finished a traditional art-oriented degree, and now it's time to find a job or go to grad school.
Lately I've become interested in game concept art, but most jobs I've seen require more 3D experience than I've got.
So, what should I study? Maya? Studio Max? SoftImage?
Most of my limited experience has been in Lightwave 6.5.

I recomend downloading Maya trial vs for free.. and learning that... Or find a copy of 3ds max.. both have strenghts and weaknesses, but if you learn one, and understand the fundamentals of modeling, you will be able to learn any other software package...
I recomend you practice first with simple things, then start getting more and more advanced..
There are ton of great tutorials out there for help and books as well..
good luck

Thanks for the input!
I hear Maya has a tough learning curve, but that sounds like a good place to start :)

I say - learn them all dude.
even though Maya and Max are the two top 3D modeling packages out there it will make you stand out if your packing a few more packages under your belt. not to mention who knows what package your employer will be using. Not to mention brush up on your photoshop skills (considering you’ll be creating a lot of nifty textures.)
but for sanity sake – try 3D studio max first. Its pretty much straightforward and not as complex as Maya.
maya v.3 was just stupid...and 4 is better but still lacks. Autoback up? Not in maya; however, most of the major packages out there have an auto back up feature.
why maya doesn't have it , its beyond me...guess its like the old British or US? days when automatic rifels was consider a bad thing because the soldiers would waste bullets.
har har.,
