Turning 17 huh? Planning on going to art school? You seem to have a pretty decent foundation - pro instruction could mold that into some formidable skill.

Looking good. My suggestion would be to slow down on softer shadows sometimes. It seems like you use fast, hatchy marks for all the shadows in some images and it's good to mix it up.

I can tell you are alot more comfortable and more trained at drawing from observation. Your skull drawings and some of your portraits are done very well; however, your figure drawings done without reference are flat and show difficulties with anatomy. I'm only guessing you didn't use reference, because problems are showing up where you usually don't have problems. I would spend more time working with anatomy. When you get that down I'm sure you'll be capable of making some pretty sweet art. Actually, I'm struggling to learn anatomy right now myself; check out my sketchbook and critique it. Just because I'm critiquing your work doesn't mean my work isn't at all flawless either. Anyway, you got potential, just make sure you apply what you know from observation and translate it over to your sketches w/out reference.

Oh man, you're only 16? Well then your right where you need to be. Since your in high school, do as much observational work as you can, but stay alert to your subjects. When I was in high school everybody sat at their post drilling out the same old flat, well-rendered pieces (rendering is not the ultimate discipline). There's a difference between drawing by what you see and what you understand. If you want to put yourself miles ahead of your peers do lots of studies from life (don't just sit and render). haha, that sounds really cheesey, but seriously it's true. Are you a senior, and have you been putting together a portfolio? If so, post it and we can give you some advice on what to include or work on.

hey dashi,

I did a logo for a company called "club dashi" few years back.. that was fun. hehe

Back on topic, I am stumped, considering you are 16.. these are bloody good. Charcoal drawings are killers!! portrait of your mother is a nice piece of artwork. Well even if you weren't 16 these are damn good. SprayNation has been giving some good advices. Just copying stuff isn't all that helpful.. try and imply them to your creative drawings. Good going and set aside some time for careful, hardcore anatomy studies.. creative drawings are really good but without foundations you know it's not right and vice versa.

cheers,

Min

The last few pics you've posted have been really nice. A great improvement over some of the earlier pics you posted.

Its great that you're getting serious about your art before you hit college. You'll have a leg up on most of the other students. My own experience has been that Im one of the only students who in my class who actually works on art outside of class. Just make sure not to get lazy and expect that you'll get better by just showing up to classes :)

The skull on fabric for your portfolio came out nicely good pencil control on the shading. I wonder if it's the photo or not but the skull needs to be lighter than the fabric. some strong highlighted areas like the ones on the fabric would be nice on it but the area of the highlight needs to be bigger that they are on the sheet. Try using a black sheet next time and make sure to look for any reflective lighting that the skull throws on to the cloth.

If all of the pieces are as nice as the skull one I don't see any problems with getting accepted to an art school.

Are you trying to get any scholarships?

dashi
August 2nd, 2005, 09:51 AM
deez- thanks man
bengonzalez- thanks for the crit...yea i noticed the skull wasn't as white as it should be but i couldn't figure out how to make it lighter without messing the values up. i went over it with white chalk which seemed to help a little bit. I'll try using black paper...i'm looking to do a painting of a similar set up.
i have no idea about scholarships yet...though they would be nice :^^:

Looking good dude...two crits: The gal with the swinging arm - the arm looks too small for her head; and you should do some more practice with clothing wrinkles. Remember that cloth pulls at points of tension: knee, elbow, fat stomach...lol, you get the drift. Otherwise, your rendering keeps getting better and your humans are looking good!
