dude, that sumo character rocks, and those mech silhoettes are awesome. what was your technique for doin those? i've tried doin silhoettes with a marker, but it bled too much...couldn't get a sharp edge.
were you usin wacom? i dont have one of those yet....
Lone Wolf

Kenny Fuller-thank you very much Kenny.
complete2-thank, I'm glad you like it. The silhouette's we're in done with a wacom in PS. It's a incredible tool.
When you use markers you really have to have experience with them. It takes some time to get use to them and predict where and how they will flow.

Feet my brutha. Go and check out mentler's sketchbook. He breaks down the foot like no other person I've ever seen. A feast for thought.
The poor dark wizard...is walking on shtumps. :( Some really evil footwear peeking out from under his robes would be nice. Cool handling of the cloth. Keep it coming man!

Ok bro...really quick...
1) If you're not wearing flats or sandals, usually in real life...the toe of the boot will come slightly back up off the ground. Check ref for this or this pick.
2) I modified a loomis sketch (I know...blasphemy, heresy and all of that) but hopefully what you can do is sketch your foot out underneath the shoe..and build the shoe around the foot. Right now..they kinda look blobby. (sorry) :bashful:
2498
2499
I hope this helps bro. I don't mean to be nit-picky or retentive..but the rest of the character is great...it just needs that little bit to set it all off.
Cheers

Hey Mack, knarly dude! :)
Have you looked into George Bridgeman's "The Human Machine"? Another artist friend recommended his figure drawing books to me years ago. They are less stylized than Hogarth's. A little more natural drawing style. But both sources are good to practice from.

Hey Mack.. this is interesting, combining the chaotic natural forms with the figure work that you do.
With the profile pose...it would be kind of interesting if his head were turned back around to the viewer 3/4 not full frontal so that it breaks that flatness up.
Also...perhaps a little bit of figure/ground relationship would be cool..seeing how he relates to his surroundings. i.e. is he floating?, or perched up on top of a cliff edge looking down...etc.
Otherwise cool bro.
Cheers!

Hey Mack,
Sorry for the absence, but t-dome had the best of me for a while.
Interesting form on that second tree entity (i'm guessing female). Also great that you gave it some context. Looks like you had some fun with the log as well...nice texture and natural forms.
The enviro is a bit of a challenge from where I sit. It looks like you have a ton of things all competing for your attention at the same time. Im not quite sure the focus of the piece is defined. unless it's the dual moons and sun near the horizon. Then you'd need to have the branches here in the foreground do more to bring your eye there than just across the frame via the river. Perhaps a larger canvas to play on would help. because it feels a bit hemmed in and squashed. But hey..that's just my two nasty pennies.
Keep it comin bro. Cheers!

Hey man, nice work in here! One thing I'm seeing in both your pencils and digitals is over-emphasis on details and a lack of structure underneath the tatoos, the folds in cloth, the texture of tree bark, etc.
Let's take a look at the skull for example: There are many things that are preventing the skull from appearing truly three-dimensional. The light source is vague and as a result flattens the front, most notably flattening the spherical shape at the top. I'm not sure what you're using as reference, but try to figure out the primary light source. It looks pretty good around the eye sockets, but it can be pushed further. If you happen to have a skull (or to go back to basics, use a sphere or cube), find a nice dark room and shine a flashlight on the object, and study how the appearance of one light source differs from the many sources hitting that skull. Better yet, put the object up to a window :)
It is very important to remember that the value range in the lights will never overlap with the value range in the darks. In other words, the lightest darks will never be lighter than the darkest lights. I hope this helped in some way :)

I'm really enjoying your studies and several of the works from reference, but there's a noticable disconnect between them and the stuff from imagination. One exercise I've found helpful is to draw something from reference, then draw it again without reference. This really accelerates your understanding of the object and is especially nice with faces and bodies. I think the most to benefit would be those faces, hands and feet.
It looks like you have the Hogarth book on drapery; you'll find it profitable to take what you've learned there and do several clothing studies from reference. It will really cement them and will help remove that recognizable Hogarthness (which seems more stylized to aid in teaching) from your folds and such.
Oh, also focus on finding the most interesting pose when you're working up a piece. In the early cowled zappy guy, that pure profile is among the less wow! poses (along with the pure front pose). A little hint of an angle, a twist, some elevation, will go a long way to giving a pose some life (or unlife as the case may be).
Cheers!

Lore Dwarf- A ancient race of dwarves that used to be great artist's, storyteller's and warriors. Individual Dwarves travelled abroad and recorded with words and drawings all they saw. Many of the books pages we're filled with drawings of the slain. Many feared them for tales tell of blood thirsty Lore Dwarves that wanted there sagas to be the greatest of all.And they killed to filll their sagas with heroic deeds. Each great volume is as distrinct as the Dwarf that wrote it, which makes them very sought after. Lore Dwarves also frequently travel in dark places that no one dares visit, so the knowlege in their books is extermely rare. Many desire to possess these great books, and sometimes traveller's come across dead Lore Dwarves and find there great sagas. No one has seen their tribes as they reside on the Norhtest parts of the world, and one can only imagine the great libraries that must exist in their villages.

The lore dwarf...great character. He's got a ton of things on him, with various textures and sadly the shell gets lost among them.
.Also the mountains look odd to my eye, they are a bit too simplistic.

Wow...workin that black and white like a champ.
Got just a couple of crits....
The hand on the first image...those fingers aren't convincing me that it's holding onto anything. Put a five pound bag (2kilos) of sugar in a pillow case then hold that up in front of a mirror....see how your fingers have to really clinch to keep it from slipping through your grasp. The wrist is reading flat.
The right side of the cowl got jammed up by the border.
Other than that...the third image, watch his head on the left side...it looks like it's caved in because of the shadow...just put a scrim of white to suggest his head hasnt gotten mashed in. :)
Good Luck with White Wolf bro..keepin fingers crossed.

The Frost giant design is wonderful...the bit of problem I have with it is the paint up. Remember what jason used to hammer home...using a complimentary shadow.

Heya Mack,
it seems your the only person that enjoys my stuff.LOL
I doubt that very much.
If I may add this sidenote...i think especially here on this forum...most people didn't see your earlier work..(ie. KL) and thus dont have a very long view of your progress. Whereas, I think that if they did, they could readily see the improvement and diligence with which you are striving toward your goal.
Keep your chin up friend and those concepts cranking.
Cheers!

Hey Mike, thanks for the support.
Here is pic of my recently deceased dog Rambo. He passed away on Nov.4 2006

I was in the USA when he passed away and never got to see him for the last time, his death came about unexpectedly. My brother took this pic before he took his last breaths.
He will be missed, he was my best friend and a great dog. He was a German Sheaperd mixed with Irish Wolfhound. He was about 10 years old.
Here is pic from this summer.

Not the least hard thing to bear when they go from us, these quiet friends, is that they carry away with them so many years of our lives. Yet, if they find warmth therein, who would begrudge them those years that they have so guarded? And whatever they take, be sure they have deserved.

Im sorry for your loss Mack.

Hey there Mack...
Just a couple of questions...do you plan on inking those pencils..both graphite and blue line?
Also great job there on ms.blue! The only thing i see that's a touch odd are the thighs..under the fishnets...if her skin is consistently the same hue..then that flesh is going to do the same. I think it would pop against that black and yellow.
Again...great job on her.
Cheers!

Helzon- thanks. I am almost done inking the Hellboy in the forest piece. The blue line was just a skethc so i want be taking any further.
I thought a bit darker skin under the fishnets would look cool, but your right the lighter skin tone will pop out better.
Thanks again.

Though your improvement is steady going and obvious, I would still like to see you do more with life drawings- It seems like every few weeks I get an epiphany about something- I will draw from life for days and days and then stop... and I fall into a rut, then I just sit back and observe without drawing, then I come to CA.org, then I draw like a nut again, good or bad, then I discover something.. It's a great cycle, let's see you join the marathon eh? =D

Hey Mack,
Sorry I've been a bit late in getting back here...just a ton of shit and holiday thrown in for good measure.
Seems like you got this wild wood block feel to your stuff lately.
Heavy black and white...nice sinister feel to it.
The one observation i do make time and again...are the toothpicks, cigars, cigarettes, wheat shafts..in other words your characters have oral fixations...;)
As for the Hogarth study...the hand is a bit awkward.
The webbing between the hand and thumb is missing. It should look compressed and drawn down by the thumb. Use your own hand as ref, you'll see. The pinky should be more toward the profile side..(not completely) instead of facing back.
As for the plague zombie...bro...he's looking a bit stiff...i'd say it's the feet on the same plane, inflexible arms...etc. Don't get me wrong though..the texturing is great...he definitely has a plague feel to him...it's just that you need to loosen him up a bit.
Keep ripping at it man.
Cheers!

Thanks for all the crits Mike. I use to smoke so I think as part of the healling process I make most of characters smokers! Almost make it feel like i'm smoking.
I'll make the changes on the zombie thing and re-post soon.

I don't have much time to look through your entire SB- but if you could I would say go out and draw people... do some gestures (Capturing general shape- look at Kevin Chen's stuff (http://www.characterdesigns.com/index.php?sitepage=tutorials)) and also do some blind contours-
The point of doing a blind contour (Using 1 constant line to describe what you see) isn't to be able to "Draw without looking"- which many people believe. It is to get you to look at form, and make other observations such as hue/value shifts and edges. It is an incredibley useful excersize, just make sure the person isn't looking directly at you- The stare one emits during this excersize would even phase a proffesional model, I swear :D
And right now, the snowy dude in the hat-
A note about the values; You need to make a focal point with them, all 2 of them. While it might seem the face would be the focus, because of the way you set up values, it's more sort of the tip of the hat. I can't really make any suggestion- perhaps try re-working it. Use the large value planes (The brim of the hat, the jacket) to create geometric shapes that sort of "Point the eye" if you know what I mean.

This is probably my last post in this sketchbook. I think that I have reached a milestone in my art and I want to begin fresh. A new sketchbook for the new year!
The stuff on the first page is over two years old and I want to put it behind me.
Thanks to everyone that posted and gave me crits.
I will start a new sketchbook soon with some new great work.
Later
