battle axe in each hand, my friend.
as for the critics, i think the front horse legs after the knee shud be longer, but im not even sure about that. havent studied horses, so dont take my word for it.
im expecting badass horns going forwards in front of his face, and badass hulkish muscles :D
right now he doesnt look very buff, but since u dare call him a centaur "lord" he better be hulked up a lot more :bashful:

you were right on the front legs i was off in my bend will correct that. Horns are good! i was kinda leaning towards the battle axes too.

definitely go with the axes, you need some rearing horse ref as well the rear legs are nowhere near bulky enough at the top and are too fat and long at the bottom.
His c of g is really far forward too, no way could he stand like that without his feet nailed down.

Heres my first battleaxe. Kinda rough, but its all a learning process. i probably should be using something like aves apoxie for the axe it would be alot more sturdier? now to work on the other axe.

i have to agree the axes look alot better than the spear. thanks for viewing guys. this forum is great. i probably would have never started sculpting if it were not for the great artists and wonderful help i've received from this forum! once again thanks for viewing.

Looks like this is coming along well. For animal anatomy, Animal Anatomy for Artists is a great reference. Can't wait to see some follow-up pictures.

the back legs definetly need to be bent more to support the centaur's weight raising up...love the pose and idea.

hope to have him finished by the weekend. I tried to fix the back legs but due to the way i strengthened them to stand without the bolt they were not moveable. i will remember to get my anatomy for the armature closer next time. they should be bent a little more to be supporting the weight of the horse but we live and learn. still needs a lot more refinement on the overall musculature.

I suggest getting as many horse references as possible to help you with anatomy and porportions, especially horses rearing with riders. Horses actually have rather thin legs (save for clydesdales and draft horses).
As far as anatomy goes, not too bad, although you might want to check on the size of the hooves, it looks like one of the front hooves is slightly bigger then the other. I also suggest empthasizing the ribs of the horse a bit more. Horses have gigantic rib cages, and stretching back to rear like that would make it more visible under the skin. The human part also looks more muscular then the horse part, with how the arm muscles bulge, I suggest either toning him down slightly, or googling some clydesdale pictures (which would also give you cool extras, hair around the hooves, maybe a mane going down his back, etc) and buffing up the horse.
As far as the battleaxe/spear and shield debate goes, the axe is mad-cool, but I don't think it'd be good to have one in each hand, one axe and one sheild throws off the symmetry, makes it more balanced, more interesting to look at. Ideally, one of the hind feet would be more off to the side, slightly more forward or back, and one hand would be forward while the other was back, ready to swing, but the hind feet can't be moved, so they can stay.
For future reference, remember the most dynamic poses are generally those at the beginning or end of an action... in this case, either just finished rearing up, or right after the apex of the rear, and is beginning to come back down to clobber someone/something. Also, while designs may tend toward symmetry, it's more dynamic, more natural, to be asymmetrical, having one side different. You have one forefoot more extended then the other, that's good, but you should look for ways to push your designs, make them more visually interesting.
Good stuff, I'll be looking in on you in the future. The more practice you get, the better you'll be.
