that looks damn awesome!

A smal question: Ive seen you, foster, and ashley wood all paint a similar looking character. Are you all involved with him somehow, or is it just that he's such a cool, yet simple looking, bot that all the pro's paint him?

I really like his design, and his simplicity! :D

Actually Ink we three are part of an elite crime fighting squad who remain incognito as artists until we're called to duty. At which point we all hop in unique, highly armed and armored, yet surprisingly normal looking vehicles and meet at an undisclosed location where we assemble our collective transports into one giant fighting robot, (that looks remarkably similar to the robot we three paint.) and clank about.

But you didn't hear it from me.

Incredible, as always. I love the color scheme and the whole concept is wonderful. You have that great 1950's retro feel to your robots that I love. Plus the fish. Oh yes, the fish. :D

I love these...your stuff always have this fun dreamy feel to them. This is really picky but if you add motion blur using the smudge tool (Painter 6), it would add some soft edges into your painting. Thanks for posting :)

Thanks all for the kind words on the latest piece.

To put a more truthful answer to ink's question, (Though I still stand by my earlier explination...) the reason we all do the same robot is simply that we are all drawn to the same shapes and in no small part are all influenced by each other.

Hopefully we have all inspired you in no small part and so the circle will continue.

Thanks again.

Awesome work Imp Head. :chug:

I'm amazed you get such clean lines in Painter for the wing tips etc. Did you use layers here at all or is it all on one layer?

imp head:
as i think i have written at you before, i love your artwork very much. i just love your style. after browsing your website months ago i was blown away at how work at that level was possible.
i read through your site and found your tutorial on one of my personal favorites of your works, i love the 100 robots idea. at any rate, i read that it took you around 50 hours to complete and i realized i never put more than 3 hours in a digital painting. so i slowed way down and spent more than just one sitting on a painting and created one of my best digital paintings and was my first time using painter:
my 40 hour digital painting (http://images.deviantart.com/large/indyart/indymisc/apoc_engineer_final.jpg)

it sounds kind of weird but, i just wanted to thank you for vicariously helping me out by showing me the way you worked and for the insiration.

i love your new robot very much. the wings are wonderful! is the robot count up to 12?

Always spectacular, 'specially like the feathers. One small crit however, the fish looks a little fuzzy, as in non-slick.

That's awesome. The robot seems sad.

This reminds me of one of my favorite books. There's a kid in it who's basically lost his soul, so he clutches a dried up fish as sort of a replacement.

This is such a glorious piece I had to bump it. The feathers are amazing. It is such a great thing to see the professionals posting for the dreamers in all of us, and cause our cups of inspiration to be refilled. Wonderful sense of sobriety in this piece.

Have you thought about changing your handle to Pill Head though Brian :D

Thanks again to all who wrote comments... Though this thread is a little long in the tooth more questions answered:

ceeda- "Did you use layers here at all or is it all on one layer?"

I primarily (like about 99 percent of the time) paint on one layer. Back in my Photoshop days I used layers to paint the different elements but ultimately gave it up as it gave me very VERY clean edges which belied it's digital heritage. In an attempt to make my images seem more "painted" I adopted the "single layer" approach. The only time I ever use layers these days is when I need to make color corrections or size changes to a particular element at which time I'll pop the image back into photoshop do a rough selection of the element, copy it onto it's own layer, change the color and/or size and then flatten the images back to one layer before going in and fixing any anomolies the change may have made.

killing.people- "is the robot count up to 12?"

As much as I would like to say, "yes", I can only answer no. The robot count is up to a stunning 4 robots. Due to my full time gig, (Kept artist at a game company) and the fact that these take so long to do, the whole thing is taking quite some time. The numbers in each robot piece are just arbitrary numbers that I've picked because they "feel" right rather than the order of which I painted them.

Nirox- "I've always wanted to see a fat version of that robot
CONSIDER IT A CHALLENGE BRIAN!"

Would you believe that I've got a bunch of these guys already sketched out and there is in fact a fat one amongst the crowd? Perhaps I'll paint up that one next.

Irate Customer- "Have you thought about changing your handle to Pill Head though Brian"

No, but I'm sure my wife has! Woooo I'm here all week.

Thanks for the bump by the by.

Okay kiddies, it's back to the Wacom tablet for me.

Man I LOVE the detail in this work! Not just the artistic, but the image~mythos motifs: the angel wings, the "halo" antennae and the fish all bring to mind a fallen (Judeo-christian) Angel motif.

My god. This art piece simply blows my mind away-- Your head goes wild with all sorts of possibilities that can be read into the scene and it's so visually appealing to boot.

I have sooooo much catching up to do.
