The funniest thing about this, atleast to me, is that his neck looks like a thumb or fringer so to me it looks like a little finger puppet caricature. I like the modifications you did to the 2nd one, he doesnt look as creepy.

The face looks great! The neck...although I'm sure was intended to be super thick, doesn't look like it fits well (IMO).

However, the face, really good job on that!

about the neck: its a caricature, a deformation of reality...

thkx nutter. You are right on that point, some characters demand more work than others.

goodness nelson, I'm pretty sure this is the best one I've seen you do. Likeness is working, and you got a good amount of structure in there. Maybe you just spent more time on this piece? Not sure, you should make every piece at least this polished from now on. A few things though:

-the neck thing Nappydog mentioned is kinda right. it's not a matter of size or shape, but the angle it joins the head is what people are reacting to. It's obviously a caricature, but that's not the issue. The head feels like it's kinda jammed onto the neck, not like it's actually connected via bones and muscles. I think just a little curving of the neck to have the neck-head angles flow together would not only make more 3-d sense, but it would also help the design flow better, which is really what we're about as artists.

-the chin isn't bad or anything, but I think you could've done more with it. In some pictures he's got a reese witherspoon kind of chin. I think playing that up would've flowed nicely with the mouth and moustache and made for more dynamic shaping overall. Also, the asymmetry with his jawline doesn't seem to serve a purpose.

-the texture you added behind his head is definitely not working. When you use a textured brush like that, it needs to be more varied and interesting. Vary opacity, size, etc. so that it doesn't look like a texture made with a brush tool that's sticking out of the picture and taking away from colin's cute hunky face. Basically, just be a lot more delicate with it.

Like I said, I'm seeing great improvement, and this is the best likeness I've seen you do. For the future, try more three-quarter angles. In general I think you should try to use more shape overlap in your pictures, and 3/4 angles are good for that. It's easier to make a dynamic drawing when your features have more spatial interaction. (just like your avatar. It's great, and a big part of that is the overlaps.) Also, try to experiment with color palettes a little more. I think Court Jones does a great job of this. (Kruger too, of course, but that goes without saying.)

By the way, are you an NCN member? They easily have THE best forum for caricatures I've ever seen. You're obviously a caricature fiend, so I'd officially recommend checking them out. That's where Joe Bluhm, Obdebeeck, and everyone else posts now. You have to join the NCN, which costs money, but it's awesome.

So there you go. Keep 'em comin'!

Great to hear from you Andy! You are absolutely right in everything you said, especially the 3/4 question, this is my prefered vision when i work live because you can capture the 3D look of a character.
I also believe this is one of my best caricatures till now, and i think i´m understanding a litle more about lights and shadows, i might be failling in my backgrounds, i guess that is a weak point, have to improve that in my future posts.
I was looking at Colin´s caricature one of these days and i think that decreasing the neck could bring that structure you are talking, it really looks to be in a wrongle angle. Some features will come with time. I´m reworking my Angelina Jolie caricature and i hope that she could be my best caricature ever.
About the NCN i´ver heard about that, everyone talks about it, its a question of time to join in, wich will happen in a month or two. I´m going to a convention in Spain and definetively hope to get in touch with one of my idols there: Opdebeeck, he was the one who i started learning caricatures when i boght his book.
By the way hope to get a Penelope CRuz from you for the contest man!

see you later!

lol nelson,
very good work. You guys that do this kind of art always make me laugh. The face is a very good likeness. Maybe a little adamsapple on the neck would help sell the neck issue. Over all I think you nailed it, or should I say "BULLSEYE". :rendered:

Looks great, nice caricature and recognisable.

My only crit is really that I think you should make the mole or dark freckle on his left cheek, bigger and more obvious, since I think that's something that makes him even more recognisable... maybe it's only me who sees that, though :P

As an Irish man I take offense, nah us irish never really liked colin, thats why we gave him to america.

I dunno why but the caricature reminds me of BOTH colin farrell and george lucas. i think its the neck.

Good job though I like it alot.

now that ^ mentions it, the first one would be a dead ringer for george lucas with some grey streaks and chubbier cheeks.

Thkx guys.
-Bruce you pointed another way in the neck question and you are absolutely right, definetively have to change that neck :)
-Mop you gave me another light in this one thkx.
-Tobin, dont know why you dont like Colin, the man was caught with a playmate for what i know, this could be another home-video-steal-hit like the one of Paris Hilton. Oh ok lets forget the neck if this was the times for French Revolution i would guillotinate this guys neck! just joking :)
