This is my first post. I just knew this website few days ago and found this helpful topic. After I learnt several techniques from Bumskee and others members, I am able to do one apple of my own. Here it is. I am improved at second one. Comment me.

tmyohlaing: try to add more details in the first apple, it look like'snot finished yet. Work with brush with smaller opacity on higher resolution. The second picture is too torn it will be look better with brush with softer edges :)

Thanks Alkazaa for giving me comment of my paintings. I appreciate that.
Alright. Here you go again. This time I painted over the same apple and used too much of smudge tool. Lol. The second one is the persimmons fruit. I took my time when I painted that one and went over detail again and again. Hope it looks good.
Comment, please.

tmyohlaing: now it looks better :) this second is really good in first you better try to work more with highlights i think is too many light in the top of apple
Ayladriana: you show us eight diffrent colours ;p in apple i can see only half of them ;P if you use all the apple will be more realistic :) and it's too small if you show us igger version it wil be easier to see details

All Hail Bumskee. And Tei, since those two started this thing.
I read until my eye was wet while at work tonight, and put to practice on my warm ups when coming home.
I don't know how much I've been struggling with colours. This is as Bumskee told in the first post, hard edge, blending with colours, all that. No dodge, burn, smudge, etc. Just as explained.
I think I might have to tell my husband I have a crush on bumskee's technique.....

I've coming to this thread for a while, mostly when bored just to check on the new painter's works and everything. Obviously I'm bored now and decided to post the steps of this "stone" I did instead of an apple. I made this around November 6-ish. Its not that good... The "ridges" were added last and made the rather simple looking stone more "lively" and less barren.
I would like to get a tablet but they're too expensive. :[ I have he money I just have this thing where I research it to death, hesitate about buying it and don't buy it, thinking there's something better... Idk... lol. Just enjoy...

Having recently blown the dust off of my painting and drawing skills I've found them to be incredibly rusty. So I've been practicing, practicing, practicing.
I found this thread, amongst others and I thought I'd join in. The life drawing is an excellent exercise and I'll be trying some of that soon.
In the mean time I thought I'd try colouring Teigrob's ink in my own style.
Advice on how to improve it would be warmly welcome.
I've included the various steps to show how I work.
I turn the lineart into a multiply layer. Under that I block in the colours. Over the colours but still under the lineart I drop in a a texture layer (usually a photo of concrete or rust or something).
Then I paint in a layer on top of the lineart using the methods espoused here.
Cheers,
Crow

I am stuck, been trying to follow those beginning steps and make an apple...but I cant get the lines of detail right.... (those lighter "Stripes" that run down the apple)
If anyone has advice on what I can try to get the lines to fit? I might just start over again tomorrow and see if I can get more done.

Hey guys, great thread with helpful tips.
Although ive used PS for a few years, I've only used it to create textures for level design and 3d models, never really for "painting", this was my first bash at it, my own portrait.
Some questions, opacity and flow, to me they do similar things, whats the main difference and what situations would you use a low flow instead of low opacity when painting?
Whats the general thought about painting in grayscale first, then painting the colour in later? I thought it would be easier as it would easily allow me to change the colour tones. (which you can see i have trouble with)

Amazing little walkthrough~~ It really helps a lot :)!
Oh! & Just a little shortcut for those who might not know; you can set you wacom tablet pen buttons to "alt" so you can just click the button on the pen to pick colors instead of having to hit alt on the keyboard or select the eyedropper tool all the time~
Start -> control panel -> ( switch to classic view in order to see ) pen tablet properties
Select "modifier..." for whichever button you feel you will use, and check "alt."
Hope someone finds that useful~!~

Fabulous :}
Here's a another technique to blend colors I've just learned today...
The idea is to use the healing brush tool in phoshop. You know...the tool that
looks like a bandage...
_First you got to create an image 32 X 32 or any square type image I guess.Fill it with any color you want.
_Then, you go to edit/ Define pattern/click... and you close the image.
_You begin to paint or edit a painting and use the healing brush tool with the pattern mode on (in the option bar).
It's working pretty well.
Here's some tests i've done as well as my contribution for this thread...

I have been lurking around the CA forums for awhile, mostly in the "It's finally finished!"-forum. Found this thread a couple of days ago and decided to give it a try. So here is my first attempt to try and paint in photoshop. This was done with Photoshop CS2 and a mouse (!)(yes, I need to get me one of thoose Wacom drawing boards). I decided to do the apple and used bumskee:s line drawing as a sketch to start from. Critics please.

After viewing most of this thread after choosing to delve into any sort of drawing or painting for the first time since middle school, I made these two.
Crappy Apple: looks like plastic, lacks a lot of detail and I am not happy with the ending colors. However I am extremely happy with it for how long it has been since I have worked with anything resembling painting. Pretty much followed bumskee's directions. Time spent: about 2 hours.
Flower thing: Once again not happy with the coloring. You may notice the leftmost petal has a little detail the others were lacking. I tried for at least an hour to add the small details from my source but I could not make them look right at all. At that point I pretty much gave up to try to improve my skill elsewhere. Time spent: about 5 hours.
Point out anything you guys notice about whatever. I definitely know I need work in every category but It's nice to see the problems that jump out at others.

Hey guys, saw the thread, saw the author and could not believe I stumbled across it. Bumskee it is very generous of you to be spending so much time in sharing skills and knowledge about photoshop and in such great detail with simple to follow exercises. Many a tutorial out there as some will have noticed will just be a snapshot, walk through or vague description with a lot of hidden details and not much in the way of visible or public Q&A interaction. Kind of like, here's a program there's the result and fill in the method completely yourself.
It's good to see someone able to inform what tools are a good idea but more importantly why or how it is so. And taking time to make sure that people understand things if they feel they have missed something important.
Admittedly I haven't managed to read past the first page yet, because I am not skipping the reading, I plan on getting around to reading the lot over time.
I'm an AIE student and concept art is a big thing, these exercises would surely help out a lot in that endeavour. I mentioned, "saw the author" up there, there is a reference drive at class that contains a large collections of reference materials and images. For Bumskee I noticed we have an entire folder named/dedicated and I must say I am in awe of the quality and skill in the works. I hope to one day reach a point where although continuing to improve, can be content. That is my goal.
So time to start, the apple exercise of page one. I unfortunately forgot that with an expensive rebuild I could only afford half the ram I used to have for the time being and well of cause I forgot to save regularly, and have less programs open than I used too. x.x Crashed and lost my steps.
I copied the apple over to the side and played with the smudge tool turning off smoothing for performance sake and turning on scattering. I used a default brush that time but it works with custom brushes too (but avoid going too far with the choice of brush, it has a bit to calculate you know) I find it can provide interesting results. I didn't quite achieve as good as a water colour effect as I have in the past but it'll do. Still I don't use it all the time, just when I feel like doing something different; some of my class mates saw me use it and felt inspired to ask me how - so I decided to put here too. Sorry if it has already been covered in the posts I am yet to read.

It's too small to be a nectarine-about half the size of my thumb.
But that's ok, I loved painting this cute little thing :^^:
Btw, I use both Painter and Photoshop to paint.

Alright, I've been browsing through this topic, and decided that it was time I give it a try. This is my first attempt to ever paint anything in Photoshop, or any program for that matter. I went with an apple, as you all did in the beginning of this thread. I'd like so say that I only spent 20 minutes on it, but I actually put it to rest after a couple hours. Yikes! Anyway, please leave comments and criticisms. Thanks!

Hiya Stout, nice apple, I admire your attention to detail especially :confident though it looks floaty if you know what I mean: like it is hovering. Try including the context to ground the image, for example the shadows in your ref. They are interesting and they frame the apple and give the entire image depth.

Brilliant!
I don't have fruits nor vegetables in my house (:[ Yeha, I know!), so I used your drawing, I know that that's not good, perhaps I should bought some fruit.
The good news is that it looks pretty good, the bad ones are that it took more than half and hour, and mine doesn't look to much like an onion.
I think that the first step (blocking colors) is crucial, pretty much as gesture at (or in?) drawing.
Ok, thanks for putting it on the net

Sup everyone. I'm new and I just have to say this is an awesome website!
This forum rules, and this thread is like two years old and still going!
Tried to paint an orange. Took like half an hour. Damn slow I am.
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/58007490/ :)
Technique note:
I did the skin texture with the standard round hard brush at mid opacity and lo-flo but if you’re in a rush or this was a smaller detail there’s a dotty standard brush further down on the list.
You can adjust the individual dots sizes by choosing any size of the brush and then resizing it.
For example choose a small brush (small and few dots) and with the slider above make it big as hell. That will give you a brush with bigger dots than the corresponding size of brush in the library, and vice versa.
Site note:
hows everything with sharing images on this site?
Can I upload? or do I have to put stuff on sharing sites that shut down the images after like two days?

Hey Funkyskull,
Great lighting and details on your fruit. I really like the way you did your highlights on your orange.
One thing I would suggest is using a direct link to the image instead of a thumbnail so people don't have to leave the site to see your full-size picture.

Hey there BWT, Impressive done by a mouse, not sure how you haven't got RSI.
Crits wise:
For me starting out block in all the colours on the canvas, so don't start with a white background if you are going to change it.
The colours are great and has real form around the stalk and top, seems to loose it a bit toward the bottom where i think you got bored of directional strokes.
The dots all over really help with the appley texture! (i don't think thats even a word)

I think it's a nice drawing. I don't think your assessment of yourself is entirely fair.
I think that your colours are nice, but maybe tend towards brown a bit more than I'd expect in a rosy apple. The specular light on the apple looks good. The appley lines that spread out from the stalk describe the form and make it look appley (to use Badger's terminology ;) ) But on the other side of the apple in the lower right red area, there are some brushmarks that make the apple's surface look rough and textured. Maybe you should try to keep your brushmarks all going in the same direction to help describe the form better?
If you had tidied up the edge around the apple to give it a crisper form I think it would look more solid, and maybe including the shadows would make it seem less like it was floating.
Bones Weep Tedium
July 4th, 2007, 04:14 AM
Hey comixnut, I really hope you don't think I'm being unpleasant but what is this a drawing of? Is it an apple or a capsicum/pepper (depending on which side of the pond you are)? The stalk and the appley lines make me think in all likelihood that it's an apple, but the shiney surface and it's shape make it look like a pepper. I think that the brown you have used at the bottom of the apple should be tonally darker becasue at the moment I don't think it reads like shadow.
Before you start to do shadows/highlights you could use a hard edged brush on a low opacity with the green colour to build up some texture and detail on the surface of the apple, becasue at the moment it looks so smooth it could be mistaken for a pepper.
The most striking thing about this image that really grabbed my attention when I first saw it was the shadow. It is way too heavy. If the light source was strong enough to actually prduce shadow as inky black as that then it would cast similar shadow on the apple. The shadow on the floor would be so tonally different from the shadow on the apple if the shadows are cast from the same source.

Uh if it's alright, I did one myself. I was sick and had to stay home today, so I tried this out. I actually got an apple from the fridge and started working on it in PS CS2. I guess it took about an hour? It's not the first time I've colored something in PS, but I believe this is the first digital painting I've ever done. It was definitely educational. I honestly thought it would turn out a lot worse. I'm kind of proud of it. :)

This is actually the final version, but I don't like how the shadow came out. Here's another version that doesn't involve a crappy background and shadow, but I think it still looks okay. :bashful:

I prefer the version with the background, I think the one without looks like it's floating and the colours don't look as rich without the coluor behind them.
The texture and the specular highlights are really nice, and I love the deep, rich red of the apple.
One question: was the apple actually that outlandish shape, or is that a stylistic decision of your own?

Thanks. I think you're right. The background does kind of bring the colors out more. And yeah, that apple did look pretty much like that. Go figure. xD But of course, maybe my perception is warped and I can't draw, but I copied it from life, so it really did look top heavy and weird.

Hi Janooh..
Im still amazed abou how good it came out in the end. It took almost five hours. I read the tutorials over and over and only stopped when the yellow was looking like green to my eyes.. It was very early almost 5 am.
Im sure you could do it too.. it was my first attempt and i just learned that what you need is patience and more patience.. A little brush here and there and with time it will slowly get better.. Icant remember how many times I painted it over and over and over so i could be satisfied with it.
I just learned about speed painting and I can only say that i SUCK at it..
But i just took 30 days off from work and I will be painting all the time till I can paint better.
Oh..anyone can drop a few tips on how to paint landscapes or rocks? Im having a hard time at it.. Some explanation on what brushes to use and with what settings would be appreciated too..
Bye..

Why do the brush strokes not seem to coincide with the size of the cursor circle unless you press down really hard?

maybe the image doesnt have to be quite so huge for such small studies?
These are very nice, esp the cherry. I can see from your paint daubs that you have got the hang of changing the satuation and level of your paint, maybe you would get some good experience mixing a few extra tones into your work as well? See what some subtle elements of purple bring to the otherwise lifeless banana?

Most of us are years away from this but it was great to watch. It may look like he spent 30+ hours on it and it looks very refined from a distance but if u look a the .psd at 100% it's actually very rough and quickly done. Used bits of photos here and there to save time too.
http://thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/dle01.html
I've lost track of how many times I've watched this. This is superb speed painting and he has a technique of using custom brushes that save tons of time in the beginning. Goes through 5 or 6 paintings covering using the brush technique and some preliminary paintings that then lead up to the final painting as seen on the cover. No use of photos.

I made my own (help me paint in ps thread) only to find out This amazing thread was here. I can't wait to read and attempt all 38 pages of apples and such.
Anyway I just got my first gfx tablet a few weeks ago (intuos3 A4) and am only starting to take art seriously, and love it now more than anything else.

Here's my apple, it's pretty godawful.
[Reference picture. (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c261/AmpersandTR/ConceptArt/gala-apple.jpg)]
#1 - Basic colours. I accidentally coloured on my sketch layer, so couldn't get a picture of it. :^^;:

#2 - Trying to add more colour and define some details.

#3 - Applied some texture, still adding details.

Hey thanks for the encouragement 4ntimatter, makes all the difference. You guys overseas must have different apples as I notice the one you painted doesn't have the color variations of the red delicious, I reckon I got lucky with that as it allowed for a lot of random texturing to trick the eye. I do love your style however. I'd love to get over my obsessive compulsiveness for detail and get that soft effect that you've achieved. Keep it up!:painting:

Yes. I used a different brush there. dont remember which exactly: Splat or splat 2, from the brushes that bumskee posted. nice random effect eh.

1. put down color flats
2. LOTS of resampling and blending
3. add details and highlights
lessons learned: zoom out frequently and look at entire painting to check for mistakes, save highlights for very last, stay away from soft brushes (too much = blurry painting)
still making newb mistake of picking too saturated colors :( need help on how to properly select colors using PS's "color picker". slowly going to iApathy's link in the meantime.

@Ampersand: nice apple! try pushing the colors more. what really jumps out is how grey it is. may want to try adjusting levels or saturation to bring out the shiney apple
@SVargo: it looks like the apple got lost in the small brush detail. think there is some nice transparent layer build up underneat but I can't tell because it's overwhelmed by the skinny lines. if you look at post #6, bumskee sticks with large brushes and use detail brushes sparingly and lightly towards the end.
@JoeX: wow, i envy your ability to paint water drops. only thing i can think of is the black too black? maybe make it a richer black by mixing in some color in there. maybe more reflective light? light bounces off surfaces and casts light back up at the object even in shadows.
@PaperWings1: Yep, needs more orange :P
@Bertoxxulous: looks fuzzy/airy. think it needs a little more layering of color and blending. looks a tad too grey, may want to try out a little adjustments as a test
My apple needs more green and needs more darks in places like the stem area. (゚⊿゚)

No, I actually didn't look at anything while I made it, I just thought of an apple from memory. I would have used a ref. but it just so happened that we were out of apples at the time. I did learn a surprising amount about how to shade from just doing the 1 apple. It's amazing how just trying different things can help so much.

aah, hmmm...I have a brown mixed in with the black, but I think when it was compressed to a JPEG it got a bit darker. Plus I need to continue adding some leaves around the apple & that will help with the over all black feel the image has now.
Water drops aren't even completed yet... ;)

Hey guys!
First of all I must say that I'm ablolutly new to digital painting and to this forum - I love both <3 .
Especially this threat is really helpful to people like me and thanks to bumskee, Teigrop and all the others full of tips. I can only thank you for this!
Well, now it's time for one more apple, I think :^^:
1st step: only colors, without any line-painting (I don't know why...)
http://www.lizzynet.de/home/miracula/_apfel2_1.jpg
2nd step: blending, blending, blending
http://www.lizzynet.de/home/miracula/_apfel2_2.jpg
3rd step: more blending... I tried to add a kind of structure - without success
http://www.lizzynet.de/home/miracula/_apfel2_3.jpg
4th step: this was most difficult, adding the highlights and - again - STRUCTURE *argh*
http://www.lizzynet.de/home/miracula/_apfel2_4.jpg
5th step: here is some structure but I think it makes the apple appear flat. I added the stem and a touch of brown
http://www.lizzynet.de/home/miracula/_apfel2_5.jpg
Well, I think it's not too bad but there are still a lot of things I have to improve. First of all I have to add a shadow next time - it look a bit lost without. In addition I'm unsatisfied with the lower part of the apple. I think it's too flat, doesn't look threedimensional there. And the strukture of course.... I've no idea how to add it without destroying the blending. :nohope:
But I'll never give up! ;)

Ptaah, I think your apple looks much better than mine - and I like your background. Did you use any reference?
But here I'm missing the typical texture of an apple, too. Those red and brown spots and stuff like that....
Well, I'm going to practise ^_^
Ptaah
August 14th, 2007, 04:32 AM
i dont really think that my apple is better. in my opinion u should add some shadow & background next time (or at least shadow), and that should be it :)
and about textures, i didnt add any to my apple, will have to try it in my next paintings. as a reference i used some photo found on the internet.

August 14th, 2007, 05:52 AM
Yeah, you're right. Painting something without shadow isn't a good idea. Maybe it's because I've not much practise in paining....
Next time I'll use a reference too and watch it carefully . It's already in progress ^.^
Edit:
It's finished, voilà:
http://www.lizzynet.de/home/miracula/Apfel2_komplett.jpg
I cheated a bit with the colors, because they were...well...colorless -.-. So I added more contrast to the final picture.
Now I'm quite satisfied ^_^

Yo... New here. Hi...
Can someone, like, give me some advice? My work is (if I may say so myself) very good when I draw by hand. But when it comes to colouring in photoshop, i think I lack something... Contrast, maybe?
I've got some photoshop experience, but I've only been working on it for like a month or so... And I'm applying to a school that requires coloured pictures, preferably digitally edited, so I need to be as good as I can be... Any Ideas?
I've put one of my newest pictures here (if I can get this Gawd-forsaken thing to work). Nothing start-to-end here, just want to know what's wrong with it (in my oppinion, yes, there is something wrong with it)...
Any advice or criticism?

Let me start by saying I like your drawing, and am only being picky becasue you insisted ;)
The very first thing I noticed was her left eye. If her ocular orbit has been shattered away, you wouldnt see an oval-shaped eye like you would with an intact face; you'd see the entire spherical eyeball behind her face.
Her eye drew my attention to the yellow stuff on the left of the image. Smoke? Fire? After some consideration, I decided it was fire. . . . ? If so, this is the weakest part of the image. This would be a powerful light source that would cast deep shadows all across her face. You should also consider the picture's overall tonal values, becasue to make the flame look energetic and bright, it would have to be the most saturated colour and the lightest tonally. Working on this would also help to tackle another issue, the lack of contrast in the image.
If it's not fire, then that is an indicator of somehtig else to spend further time on; texture. I couldnt really tell what the yellow stuff is, and her hair is a little under developed.
Finally, the black background is a little severe; maybe if you used a 100%flow 25%opacity soft edged brush with a dark colour to sketch in some vague details/shapes it would help to liven up the whole image.
Good job, though. The delicate rouge of her cheeks is very subtle and her lips are very well formed (though maybe the gap between her lips is a bit severely black?

I'm pretty new to this site and haven't posted anything yet...however, I'm really fascinated with all of this digital painting. I'm very glad that I stumbled upon this thread because everything in the first post in which he said not to do, I was doing.
I'm currently experimenting with how the brushes react to my pen and tablet. I've noticed that some people took off the 'brush size pressure sensitivity' while others enabled the 'pressure sensitivity opacity'.
I can get almost the same result with either, I just wanted to know what would be better to use for digital painting.
If there's something that I missed, then feel free to inform me about it as well.

October 26th, 2007, 07:05 PM
kode, it's not just all random.. don't try and see blending as just smooth gradient of two colours but tackle it as in next part of blocking in the colours but just in a smaller sizes.. so you are just refining those blocking ins.. and then u will notice a surface that seems to smoothly integrate with another, then blend those two.. other times just keep putting down those colours you see.. but yeah smaller block ins!
jonor and syon, there's thread #2... pretty much the same as this but just a new thread.. :)

If you do decide to get a Graphire, that will do for beginners.
However, after that, it might be...a waste....in my opinion.
In the future, when your hands and skills are more refined, you might grow to like the idea of the more sensitive tablet; Intuos3.
I myself started out with the Intuos3. And finding that it will be a suited tool for a VERY long time. It was expensive, and things were tight for a while. But I don't regret it.
Go to this page and compare tablets. :)

its amazing how much I needed this thread, painting in PS can be overwhelming if you dont know the workflow. The thread also shows the struggles I have had when starting out.
btw your workflow is similar to ron lemen's, id say its the way to go =)

This is my second attempt at painting in PS and making an apple…It still looks painty and I want to make it look fairly realistic. I need help...The bottom is weird and I dont know how to fix it. The steam needs a shadow but every time I tried to put one on it wasn’t quite right.
And suggestions? Thanks friends.

kurisute_hasu & carboncillo:
Keep in mind the types of edges on your apples. the side of the apple that is closest to the light source will have the hardest edge and the side that is furthest away will have the softest. There's a post somewhere on conceptart about edges if you want further information.
Basically you have four edges: hard, dull, soft, and lost.
more specifically, kurisute_hasu, soften the edges of your apple towards the bottom of it near the shadow. This will ground the apple and give it a rounder feel. Good job on the rendering, but i don't really see any value on the apple. Remember that an apple is basically a sphere. You have the highlights but it needs more of a shadow.
carboncillo, get rid of that black line around your apple. It flattens the apple and makes it look like a cut-out. Your second apple has much better edges to it, but they still can be pushed further. Also work on your apple shape. Once you have the actual shape of the apple down, then work on color.
Hope this is helpful and I apologize for not being able to give an example; I don't have my wacom tablet with me.

After browsing through this thread I thought I'd give it a try ;)

First try at the apple. No ref used, no lighting and whatnot. Just trying out the tips Bumskee gave at the very beginning.

Here's my attempt. I'd really like some critique on it if anyone has the time. Took about an hour with my wacom 3. I found it hard to connect it to the shadow on the floor though. With too much dark it just makes it wierd but too light and its too separated....
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/1152/redapplejt2.jpg
Oh and a tip, for the little spore blotchy things (i dont know what they are called) I put a drop shadow on the layer to make them highlighted more :)
@ Icechip - Great apple, but lose the outline and it will be great
@ phatpuppy - Try not to be too saturated with the colours and try to make the reflection flow around the apple more, rather than just a spotlight hit.
@Jonor - I love how you put the flooring in to have the colour diffuse, but just try to soften/lighten the edges abit to stop it looking too cutout from the rest of the scene
Btw Bumskee, thanks for this thread, it maybe a few years old, but i've found your tutorials and comments really helpful. Oh and I loved your catacomb entry the other month, neither of us won though unfortunatly :(

Wow. I have been useing photoshop to paint for a couple of years now. I feel like I learned how to paint backwards. I tend to use soft brushes to blend I cannot get the same look with hard brushes.

Chuck, did you use a soft brush to render it? it looks way out of focus. this thread (and the other) were focused more on blending brush strokes made with a hard brush (no alias).
also the other thread Digital Painting in PS #2 is the updated thread that people actually are working with. this is an old outdated one.
hope this helps!

My first attempt at an apple with a shitty glitchy mouse and a little determination. Had some issues with blending, but I'm getting the hang of blocking and some minor details. Any tips pls message me or reply to this. BTW Look at my horse. It's amazing.:mod:
I also had no reference. So it made it waaaaaaaay harder. altogether it took 2 hours.
