It's looking good so far, especially for your first digital painting. As far as critiques go I'd need to see a larger version before I can give you feedback, as this one is too little to see much detail. Something that's at least 400 or 500 pixels in width, or bigger if you like would help :).

One hint from me...sharpen the edges of the single elements...like the tree and the grass....they are washy...

Thanks for loading a larger image :). In terms of a critique I agree with Fozzybar's suggestion of sharpening the edges of the grass and trees. The background could also use more detail so that the trees look more like trees and less like random brush strokes (forgive me if I sound harsh but I want to offer you a useful critique if I can). I think the tree looks great, as does the little lamp on the rock to the side. Seriously, for a first digital piece this is really good. My first digital works were so abysmal I cringe to think of them (still are sometimes). Hope that helps :).

One thing to keep in mind elwood is that you need to treat digital painting in the same manner you would with a regular painting...start with a big canvas and then zoom in for the details...then zoom back out to see it's effect on the piece (just like taking a step back from your canvas).
