3 painted (environment) illustrations

Hey,

Here's the cover + 2 booklet illustrations I did for the upcoming new cd of a dutch rockband called 'Epica'

All illustratios had to look 'epic' and in the mood of the LOTR films, other then that I had alot of creatieve freedom. Thanx for looking!

Wow Edwin you are really improving yourself time and time again. My only crit is that maybe you could've pushed some colors more, make some areas stand out more, now it's a bit monotone. I like the ship the most it has the best composition imo. Great pieces!

This has got to be the freshest environment work I've ever seen! I adore the faceted form of the rock created with the confident thin/thick brushstrokes and the natural flow that they have. The diving figure is a great focus point, too, and I'm enjoying the LOTR feel you've put in these without using that distinctive foam-cut rock that you see in all the movies :^^: One of these is wallpaper of the month for me easy!

My crits on the water splashes in the first and third - it's too obvious that a brush has been used and there's not enough scale difference in the water droplets in regards to their distance.

Woah, moving up, hmm Ed? Mooi gedaan, man! Your environments are always awesome. Good job.

I got 1 complaint, and it prolly doesn't even qualify as a complaint. These images don't seem 'tied together'. The first one has that LOTR/magical fairytale-mood going the most, the other 2 kinda lack that imo. The third seems more like something from the greek mythologies or something, i keep thinking of odyssius now. Since you said it's for a cd-booklet, maybe that's something you should consider.

Wow, these are just awesome! I think the person diving off the cliff there really adds to a great atmosphere. Beautiful! :teeth:

Love the first one the most. Was watching LotR - Return of the King last night and they showed a beauty shot of Rivendale. I was thinking how cool it would be to do some base jumping off of those really high bridges.

Your strokes really add a sense of movement. I feel like a strong wind is blowing though all the pieces. Taking something static and making it move, fun stuff. Thanks for sharing.

wow man good stuff. maybe some detail textures on the foreground elements? they have an 'alan lee' quality to them without looking 'alan lee'. nice job.

I'm no artist just a critic and admirer and let me say I really like this work. I really like the top one with the city, not sure about the diver but overall excellent work thank you for doing it and sharing it with us all.

Thanx guys, really appreciate the feedback. I really have been focussing on digital painting, means alot people are starting to notice improvement in my wo rk. Big change in regard to older painted works, is that nowadays I first work out my paintings in greyscale, which helps me keep my values in check.

Also, alot of good critiques on my 3 illustrations and what could have been done better, I especially appreciate the one wi th varying the size of the splatter of water, very useful tip! Adding texture to foreground elements is another very useful one. :)
