Yeah a lot of people have had this problem. You might want to check out a thread I started over at CGtalk about it. We've been trying to figure out how to stop it from happening. Heres a link to it.

I noticed someones started a thread over at Eatpoo too but they're not sure whats causing it either.

Hi:
I'VE GOT THE SAME PROBLEM TOO!!!!!!!!!!!
Got my PAINTER 9 from Amazon UK 3 days ago and I'm ringing them this morning asking for a returns number.
I can see now why the programs is being sold at a 40% discount.
The program to me is pure rubbish to keep crashing like that.

Hi,
I know it's not much consolation when you don't know why Painter IX crashes, but a lot of people are using it happily and without problems, and using it in all kinds of ways, including high profile professionals.
From this, and I read posts all over the Painter community daily, I conclude that it's not always Painter IX that's causing the problem. It can be system problems, software conflicts, any number of things. (Read DigitalShade's post at CGTalk's Corel Painter forum... information from Corel, for instance.)
As hard as we've all tried, we can't find a continuing thread running through all Painter IX users experience to figure out why this is happening.
Not that this is at all a scientific answer, but my intuition tells me it's related to the X's in our OS versions. Something's been whacky ever since the X's came into the picture.
;)
Maybe they've put a OS-heX and Win-heXp on us!
I hear it even happens with Photoshop sometimes, for pity's sake!

Hey Jin do you think we can get some of those tech support recommendations added to the sticky for keeping Painter running smoothly?

DigitalShade,
It's a thought.
However, information in that Sticky list was gathered over a long time, years of experience, and lots of checking and double checking was done by a lot of long time Painter users with successful results before I put together what we'd learned and "signed my name" to it.
At this point, I don't feel OK about adding things to that list I've just heard about once, indirectly, from an unnamed source at Corel. I'm interested in learning more but not ready to jump on that information as if it were tried and true.... yet.
Unfortunately, Corel tech support is not always right and this, too, we've learned over years of experience.
If you can e-mail me the name of the person at Corel, along with a copy of what you posted at CGTalk, I'll try to find time to look into it. Then, if I can feel fairly solid about any of it, I'll think about adding it to the Sticky.
Think about it, remember... not necessarily add any of it to my list in the Sticky thread.
Until then, as long as it's OK with the person at Corel, why don't you post it here in this forum too? Then maybe we can gather more feedback from real users.

P.S.
Notice I haven't updated the Keeping Painter 6, Painter 7, and Painter 8 Running Smoothly thread to included anything specific to Painter IX.
That's because everything seems to be up in the air with all the POOFs and crashes people are having. We don't know enough yet to be sure what to recommend for Painter IX. No one seems to have found a reliable solution that can be shared and counted on by other users.
I do often refer people to the Sticky but on a "case by case" basis if it sounds like their problems might be eased by following that list of suggestions.
I've planned to write a whole new list once we know enough.. but that ain't happenin' .... yet.
What a poop! (not me, of course)

Lol alright I was only suggesting it. :) I thought maybe it might help someone else but so far what they recommened didn't do much good for me. Maybe the patch will come out and we wont have to worry about the poof any more.

Shogmaster got me to register on CGtalk (and here as well.)
I've only recently had a single Painter Poof, and this is after nearly two years of not having a single one.
I have a theory as to why the "Poof" happens. Or at least one reason why. And a possible fix.
Of course, CGTalk's 24+ hr "confirmation" period prevents any of my posts from showing up.
I have a question:
How many here work in the drop to canvas a.k.a. "Ryan Church Method" of copy canvas, paste layer, paint away, delete areas, drop to canvas, rinse, repeat?
How many here work in several layers going between Photoshop and Painter?

So far it's been great since the patch no problem. I only had it poof once and that was due to the brush getting larger then the PC could handle. I had increased the brush a small amount and the program thought I held the tablet pen down longer making it a size 798 or something. Luckily I was able to get most of it back by the script. Other then that no problems been very happy with being able to use the program again.
I just piant and make a new layer paint, don't know anything about Ryan Church's method.

I've just decided to avoid Artist's oils. For me, it doesnt crash, but it crunches real slow, skips and freezes my screen for a second or so. Never a full crash... but i dont like it. :upset:

Photoshop is all about RAM RAM RAM.
Painter is all about CPU CPU CPU.
Painter is one helluva CPU hog.
BUT, Painter has a very ineffecient memory system. There is never enough RAM for Painter. And I think Painter 9 has even more problems with memory. I suspect there is a memory leak or something going on.
