View Full Version : DSG 801: Storybook Character: REDESIGN SLEEPING BEAUTY

The idea here is certainly not to regurgitate the ol' Disney™ image, but - of course - to kind of take that basic character background and riff on it. I'm so tired at this moment. What? So... yeah... You know what to do.
Storybook Imagery: REDESIGN SLEEPING BEAUTY

. [I had a dream with all these spiders in it... jees, the webs were all over me... some of 'em had abdomens the size of a pea. It doesn't have anything to do with the topic, I guess... but, I was just thinking about it.]

quite broad topic though... any suggestions to narrow it down? genre, time period, gender, etc?

na this is a great topic... Machzero, juss do whatever you want man.. could be like sleepying beauty in a cryogen tank 2000 years in furure like Ripley at the beginning of Aliens.. hehe theres lots to play with if you think about it.
i think there was a Wizard of Oz redesign once that was rockin'
If I can break away from work for an hour or so Im wellll looking foward to this one,
nice one Mr H, and good to see you posting pics again :yayca:]
Edit: Spiders Hand?.... See, now I see that as a coool dream.. one of those freaky as hell ones but o put it into excitement perspective.. I dreamed I was sat in a coffee shop last night... for like hours... and the only interesting thing that happened was that I got told of for "maybe" stealign a cup... I think I bored myself awake :nohope:

Tony's wife was left in a coma with little hope of recovery after the car accident, but he spent every waking moment with her for the rest of his life. When asked why, he said he couldn't imagine her waking up one day and not seeing him there for her, as he swore he always would be when they married.

Hi all, time I started practising my ass off again. I've been getting very lazy recently. Heres my contribution in Sin City style, admittedly its definitely not the most original style (seeing how many other artists are taking thier shots at it) but i found it fun anyway. This one was pretty quick.

i first was gonna draw some archeologists finding the sleeping beauty in some kinda crypt, but in the centuries shes been there she's become an zombie/mummy :P and when they get closer her she grabs one of the archeologists and whispers "kiss meee!"
but i would be drawing that till tomorrow, if i wouldnt have come up with this idea .. okay shes not yet sleeping but wait a couple more minutes and she will be knocked out for hours!

We always fear that Prince Charming will never come. He didn't this time.

A 20 minute sketch colored in Photoshop.
I really like everyone's modern interpretation of Sleeping Beauty. Funny how almost all are fairly cynical.
JWSamsara - I really like the dramatic light - with the blueish tint. It has such a wonderful cold feeling - and yet the expression on the figure's face is so warm. I find that really interesting.

Unfortunately not very original, good or interesting. A truly terrible quick sketch adjusted for way too long in Photoshop (resize the head, rearrange the face, etc etc). Still far from perfect.

Throughout the centuries she lost track of time. How long had it been since her nemesis had turned her to stone?

JWSamsara - nice concept
DeadPepper - cool style
Eriboss - cute, she has such precious lips.
xenos - scary, great technique
doyoobi wrangler - like the angle, perhaps a more exaggerated way with her head back more as if straining for that love that never came (like needing air) if that makes any sense.
machzero - just beautiful
Hamsta - would love more detail on the face.
Will Chill - a little more depth on the tank would be great
Jaer - I liked how the hair turned out, clearer detail on the eyes and lips would be good
frostsnake - like the depth and color on the gun, hard to tell if its in a holder or evidence bag
DuneFishUK - like the depth would like more detail on the face. Is she holding something?

One might ask why there is no visual of sleeping beauty in my picture. And I would answer, "Because I SUCK at drawing human anatomy". Ha. Please crit.

Xenos- hahahah I love that, it makes me laugh.
trevor - very beautiful, I really enjoy the monocromatic greenness of it. I'm not sure what's going on in the background but the thing she's in as well as the girl herself are really nice. I'm assuming it's a she cuz she has boobs :bashful:

I'm not entirely sure what you are asking. So will try to answer what I think you are asking.
There is no reference to me in the image I created for sleeping beauty.
It is a compilation (that I created) of three photos (that I took). It contains two cemetery statues and one of clouds. I did it with this assignment in mind.
I was told that I could post what I like so long as it is all my work. (emailed William b. Hand before I made my first post)
As far as not knowing the process making it impossible to critique it; it has not seemed to keep you from (less than constructive) criticism.
If you have a specific problem with me, let me know.
If you have constructive criticism to my posts please share.

Nineve Sorry if it came out bad, nothing against you or your work (my crits aren't constructive?)
Now that I know that your the photographer as well, I my come up with something, but photography isn't my forte - I only took the required semester.
Did you change any of the colors? I love the mood they create. Were the pics taken at about the same time? The statue and the clouds are lighted from opposite directions, maybe you should have flipped one? Cropping heads is usually a bad idea, but it dosen't really bother me here.
The clouds are at an odd shape, not sure if you should have used these, they make me think there might be a hidden message - a nuclear holocaust?
Everyone Feel free to tell me I suck - as long as you say why ;)

Hamsta - Sorry if I was defensive. Easy to take things in the worst light with written text.
Yes, I changed the colors so they would go better together and to set the mood. I ended up replacing the head because original did not have enough detail.
If you look at the sliver of light reflected on the statues skirt, sleave, and hair you will see in reality the light is coming from the right corner, but it is probably too high on the clouds. I think your right though about how tall the cloud column is, it does give it a fake or even a holocaust look.
Shaky - cool, like the bubbles, the image is perhaps a smidgen too dark I think.
trevor - very cool, love the light on the hand especially, think the color on the face needs to a be a little bit more saturated.
Grace - now there's a spin, bet her mother had to tell her not to run with scissor hands. Little darker facial features, especially eyes and mouth would help definition.
Monkeylizard - like the hair, not sure why you have the pixelated areas (I know its on purpose, sorry I don't get it).
