AI import to max? error to many charachters

ok im importing a logo in to max 5 it nothing special just circle with a letter cut out of it. and it goes through all of the normal dialogues then it say exceeds 255 charachters and fails. ive never seen this happen before, i was hopeing somebody would no how to either fix the problem in either illustrator or in max, most likely and illustrator prob, is it possible that max 5 wont read illustrator 10 files?

ok well it seems max 5 doesnt like illustrator 10 files,
i saved the ai file as version 8 and it worked perfectly
