In 2001, when I was still in highschool, I was turned on to digital art, more specifically digital painting, when I received a Graphire1 as a gift from my parents. I had an old copy of painter classic (back when metacreations was still the developer) and the incredibly terrible Corel Photopaint. Since then, I like to think that I've gotten a little more serious. I've been using current versions of Painter and Photoshop CS. My old computer was even struck by lightening, allowing me to get one that's more suited towards what I do with the insurance claim. However, I've been on that same tiny graphire, wearing that little plastic nib down to a pathetic little stump. I can't say that it hasn't served me well as I did get a lot of use out of it and learned pretty much everything I know about digital painting with it in those four years. Now, however, it's time for the 3.5 X 5 inch, light blue Graphire 1 to be retired after four years of honorable service.
This morning, I've placed an order for a 9 X 12 Intuos 3 (http://wacomdirect.wacom.com:80/wacomdirect/product.asp?dept%5Fid=100&sku=PTZ930) and even put down a little extra for the overnight shipping. So at about this time tomorrow (11:00 AM) the successor to the graphire1 will arrive... I will of course be documenting everything with my digital camera.

Ooooh very nice. Fancy pants. I'm still getting to know my graphire 3 :)
But I have like a TON of extra paychecks... and rather than spend it on games I'm never going to play ( I love videogames.. I just buy too many ) I'm thinking of trying to be cool and ordering the Cintiq 21UX

Congrats, Exo! I made the switch last January when I got my Int3 (an A5 tho) and it has opened digital art in all it's splendour as my old ArtPadII ran out of tips and was so terribly scratched I felt sorry for using it. But enough of me, have fun! :hatsoff:

Yeah. I can't friggin wait! This is the first summer where I don't have to spend every cent of my salary on tuition so I'm treating myself to some new toys. I've been spending a lot more time with traditional media on large formats lately, mostly because of school and I've noticed that whenever I'd return to the tablet, it felt uncomfortably small, even to the point where my wrist started to ache. It didn't feel nearly as right as drawing with my shoulder and elbow on a big sketch pad or sheet of newsprint. It'll be good to have something that I can just hold on my lap like a sketchpad and because I have a 17 inch monitor, the size ratio will be about equal. None of that proportional upscaling from a 3.5X5 inch surface to a relatively gigantic 17 inch monitor.

Wow... All I have to say is that this thing is friggin beautiful. I swear I almost teared up when removing it from the box. You always think you have a good idea of the size of an object until you see it in person. I took some shots of my new set up. Of course, the tablet will be in my lap when I use it since my work table is not nearly wide enough for me to keep it in front of my monitor but you can get a pretty decent idea of the scale I think. What I should've done was taken shots of it next to my old graphire! That would’ve nailed the point home!
I've been playing around with it for about three hours and I love everything about it. I find the touch strip to be an incredibly intuitive feature. In painter and photoshop, zooming in and out is a simple matter of sliding your finger up and down the strip. The hot keys are great as well. They come preprogrammed but can easily be reassigned. say you hold the bottom one, you'll then be able to drag the canvas around the screen with the glove tool while another key may drag out a selection. As far as I'm concerned, tablet technology has reached it's pinnacle. This is worth every last penny of what I paid.

Gah, I has a Intuos 12x18" at my other job. Weirdly now that I have a tiny grapphire I don't think it's so bad. It fits nicely on my desk. Of course there is a difference in precision.

That Cintiq was almost too much to handle.
Congrats on the Intuos! I trust that you make great use of it. :D

Congrats on the new gadget! :D
Only thing I didn't like about intuos was the mouse, it seems to be much heavier and harder to move :/
It's nice they come with 3 extra replacement nibs, :D That'll come handy, especially from what you mentioned.

actually the touch strips annoy the hell out of me!! especially the ones on the right side, before I deactivated them it used to always zoom in and out whenever I ran my arm over it while painting...what a pain. but the hot keys are dope.

bankrupt mouse painters of the CA world, unite!
if I had the extra couple hundred to throw around, i'd definately go for that intuos3, its the sexiest thing i've seen in a while. But, budget mandates that im probably going to be sticking with this good ol' mouse.

Having a decent summer job just paid off again for me. I just recieved today, from UPS, Corel Painter IX and the Wacom 6D Art Pen (to use on my spankin new 9x12 Intuos3)!! Man, I feel so liberated when painting digitally now! At the same time I'm simply overwhelmed.
I've always been one to rave about Painter and immediately jump to it's defense but Painter IX simply blows me away. I know it's been out for a while now but I seriously had no idea of what I was missing out on, especially since I skipped version 8.0. The Artist Oil brushes and mixing pallet are worth the upgrade price all by themselves.
The 6D was really more of an impulse buy and I thought it could be a cool little gadget to kick around with. I knew what it was supposed to do but I had no idea that I'd fall in love with it so quickly. Painter veterens everwhere owe it to themselves to at least give it a try. Anyone who's ever picked up a prismacolor marker will appreciate it as well.
After years of riding that graphire to death and painting the same old cliche' stuff for a poorly done website and feeling that I'm at a dead-end with an art education at an art department that's underdeveloped to say the least, it feels great to finally start taking things seriously again. I'm definitely not saying the tools will make me better. I only bought them as a result of my decision to take myself more seriously and to try to break out of my comfortable patterns that were holding me back. I'm experiencing a much needed change in additude.

Seeing as there is already a thread started about this, why would you buy such a large tablet over the A6 Intuos3. Better control? :\
Magic Man
August 27th, 2005, 07:41 AM
Obviously.
Intuos also has a bunch of things that graphire doesn't, title support, pressure levels and better tracking = increased precision.
When you use a smaller one the strokes as well as errors are magified because of the tracking ratio. Anything less than 1:1 = more innacurate than what you really are. Anything more than 1:1 = more accurate since shaky lines are minimised.
