View Full Version : Spam Tag?

It's not so long ago that the stars system was implemented. I've got a question, we get so much spam on the forums and it really bugs me. I don't think many people *like* advertises, but i really hate them. And even more so if they are not paid for.
Now I think maybe we can vote for a thread that every member can clearly recognise as spam. If the thread gets more than, say, three votes, it's locked and invisible. If people misuse the system, a moderator can then unlock the thread and deal with the /m\, but if the thread was really spam, he can delete it.
I just don't want to surf here with stupid pricks posting ads on the one page in the whole wide internet that doesn't support ads when there's so many people here that can take care of that. I don't know how hard it would be to implement something like this though.
Thoughts?

good idea :)

however...
...it will require messing around with the database (not very complicated, though)
...we will need a place for moderators to delete/unlock "spam tagged" threads. it can be done either from the normal list of threads, or on a special page.
...if we're going to do this we will also need a function "delete ALL threads/posts by this user AND ban him/her"...which I, at the moment, am not sure how to do in a way that isn't ugly and wrong :)
...people may misuse this function to "get rid of" threads they don't like for some reason. this means more work for the moderators, and also that some sort of permission system for this function will have to be implemented, so that users who misuse the system gets locked out from it.

all in all, I feel that this is too much work for too little. I mean...how many spam threads are there? not too many IMHO. if we start getting much more spam it might be interesting...but then there are also other ways to keep people from spamming.

:)

How about just a simple can o' spam icon up in the ratings? It could go right below the single star. Don't worry about all the permissions. :P
There was some talk about doing humorous ratings not long ago - I think this could fall into that category. :teeth:

[edit: hell, if we had that, I'd rate my sketchbook as spam just to be a punk :donk: ]

Hey, i tried this way of making money on the internet. I was sceptical at first, but it really worked for me. For as little as 1 hour of effort each day i was able to make over 5000 dollars a week! This is not a pyramid scam, and no payment exept the inital joining fee of 100 dollars is needed.

Too good to be true you say? I say not. I have seen it proven over and over again, with as little as ONE hour of effort each day. To sign up go HERE, (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=244118#post244118) and start making money with little or almost NO effort at all!!

We need to do something about the spam. It is appearing faster than the mods are deleting it. john o's idea rocked, but if that won't work let's figure out what will.

i think we should be able to vote on a member's behavior... if they get, say, 20 or 30 negative votes, they get a temporary ban, and then the mod can review the person and figure out if he should perm-ban them

Thank you to whoever deleted those threads but you missed one:

at least disable the link, make it link to the FAQ instead or something.

The Adobe User to User Forums have a 1-week "SinBin" where bad members are "temporarily banned." After the 1-week, they have to e-mail a mod to be re-activated. That way, the "drive-by" spammers, who only spam once, will probably never reactivate anyway...

Another way could be to give new users a probation period of a month or something. If during that period two or three people vote their post spam, the posts are removed, simple as that. If it was a newb he can pm an admin to review his case and end the probation so he can post like the regulars. If not, tough luck. Most users here should be decent enough to vote honestly.

Just an idea. I know mods are busy, and if the situation doesn't get worse there's probably no need for more work.

You guys are nice. I'd permanently ban the fucker. Spam is vile and has been poluting the net to the bone. I have zero patience for this crap and the associated poopster. /kickban *spam.*

Problem with that is most mods don't browse the lounge all day like we do. :teeth:

This wave of spam is all pushing a link to the same site, is there a way to prevent a specific link? Would it be possible to set an auto correct function that would change "http://www.pdv001.com" to the word "spam"? There has really only been a handful of sites that generate spam here, the problem is they do it over and over again. If their links won't work they will stop re-registering and posting.
