More of a charging station as of a docking bay.
Or it´s an energy portal of a docking bay, in another dimension, on a mountain.

Fast pencil sketch and Photoshop.
About an 3/4 hour.

Wanted at least one to support machzero. (You´re one steady guy btw*impressed*)

Very nice bbwolf, but the ship on the left looks a bit off, the perspective is a little strange compared to others (but ok nonetheless) but the light isn't making a reflection against the mountain. I like it though.

Open Canvas doodling before work...er, I think I need to go learn how to draw things like buildings and ships and such. X( I'm so easily sucked into monotones, too.

machzero: These are great, I love all the planning and the aircraft; I especially like the helicopter (?) on the second sheet. I have a great respect for people that can draw technical things.
bbwolf: You, too. I like your ships and port. (and turquoise!)...The portal concept is excellent.

About 1h30. I might work more on it.

I'm afraid I took the topic quite literally... ;)

hmm, not exactly a mountain...but this got stuck in my head so i went with it. took about 1.5 hrs. PS/wacom

@sillyurchin, those pillars in your pic seem to be more in the way of your focus, the craft. maybe those should go, it may give you more room to put detail on your ship, and draw more attention to it.

Hello all. I really enjoy this group and hope to dedicate myself to it daily.

*I'm trying to learn how to make the boosters on my ships look nice and firey. Any tips on this are welcomed greatly.
[i'm talking about the top right ship that's flying in the canyon : it looks more like spreaded egg yokes than scorching engine exaust]

The mountain range seperating Asgarnia from Serunia is a haven for aviation nuts who come to watch all manner of aircraft pass through, most of them belonging to traders.
painter, artist's oils 2 hours I figure, ref, the aircraft ruined it, it was all done on one layer, so I'll go hit myself now

MattGamer - it'll look fine without plumes of fire. Right now, it looks like a suicidal pilot on full burners with the landing gear down straight at a canyon wall. However, if that's the intent, google some jets taking off/landing. Heat distortion is prolly what you're looking for.

edit> on second thought... i'm talking crap... something like this?

asbestoshazard, bbwolf - thanks for the compliments. Really appreciated.

edit2> for you guys... since "thanks" is cheap.

btw, aircond's busted and it's hitting 30 celsius at night here with 90% humidity. Comp gets too hot and uncomfortable to use so last couple of DSGs have been fountain pens, dip pens, and pencils.

Now that's what i'm talkin about! Haha, no. Thanks for the image, that's exactly what i was "attempting" portray but it came out like old dried up poo on a babies buttox.

Jakub Haha good thinking on his one, brilliant :teeth:

I like the rendering as well as the idea - nice roughness to the stone, nice depth to the foreground, good palette.
Maybe the landing pad is a bit too sterile - maybe missing some flying debris or maybe more light from the mountain top engines, might help establish scale better but I'm nitpicking

Hamsta Well, thanks. I figured that giving you such critique as I do, I should at least try more to do the things I want you to. I might refine my piece later. Well, actually, I did it already... But it's not a big difference and I am not satisfied yet ( http://www.deviantart.com/view/20012490/ ).

As for your work, it's good to see more detailed parts. Some cool ideas also there. Only the landscape throws me off a bit - some parts don't seem too well defined (ex. the lower left part).
And generally I suppose artist's oils is a nice tool for painting, but, especially focusing on conceptual art, I still really advise a mix of tools. Scratchboard Rake is nice, if you learn to use it well. You can add some texture with a small sized Sponge. Nervous Pen rulez a lot. I like also Oil Pastels and Loaded Palette Knife (use it also for details! , with size about 2). You might try these. Try as many as you can.

MattGamer, the propulsion devices on your ship should be the brightest part of the image, given that they're the only visible light source, so make them considerably brighter than everything else. Also, let the light from them affect some of the background.

Although it's normally advised against, the dodge tool in photoshop is good for adding some heat to things like this. Just don't rely on it for things like highlights and shadows.

A brighter and more saturated yellow would probably look better, fading into a white core. Or if you want sci fi, blues and purples, the core of the flame should be white really, or pretty close to it at least.
