wow jon, i'm always impressed by the movement within your illustrations. i love this piece. great composition.

Haha....this "x"-ed people at the bottom are awesome!

About your concerns...you dip the brush in paint, then...er....then................huh?............. ..then......................

amazing work jon. just a picky thing: there's something about her right arm that doesnt look right...

Goo
March 19th, 2003, 11:31 AM
i believe its the left arm?

her hand is motioning downwards yet the perspective of the gun is pointing upwards.... great piece though, the composition of the piece really blows

BRILLIANT!!! The highlites on the pants really set off the whole piece!

The great thing about pixels is you can't spill them on your floor.

What is 'The Uninvited'?

Okay, put both your hands in front of you. Now, put the index finger straight up, your thumb straight to the side, and the rest of yiour fingers closed. Your left hand makes an 'L, while your right hand makes a backwards 'L' (not an L)
Anyone facing you, their right and left arm will be reversed from this technique.

The painting is really rad. No crits from me.

excellent jon. everything is so neat, from the pose to the compo. :D

Very cool! I'm very fond of such contrasted colorschemes on cloth or armour.

I like the highlight on the pants aswell, reminds me to keep highlights/speculars contrasted when rendering gloss materials and not go into greys and gradiation stuff.

I would've been tempted:
... to do schablonistic fire colored gunflares.
... to put a screamin mouth on the face.
... to make a more clean photomodel face.

Probably not good decisions, but I would be tempted :D

This one is awesome jon. The clothes you put on the woman are awesome. Her pants = awesome awesome. The guy in the background is fantastic as well..as well as the guys at the bottom...ok truth be told everything is great. The only things I would bring up...and I only bring them up for your benefit cause they don't bother me that much...are her arms and her hands as well. The form of both hands are not as clear as the rest of her. This doesn't bother me so much although her right arm fist holding the gun is bigger and draws more attention and her left fist/gun is a little hard to read at first. These are things honestly that wouldn't bother me in the least if you changed them or not...and I know you already are aware of them.

Seriously though...overall this pic kicks total butt. The composition and the color palette and everything is fantastic. You are getting better man...really..I even see improvement over the earlier ones on your website. Keep it up bro.

first of I love this piece, I love the pallete the rendering and mood are brillient. Buuuuuuuut, oh god I know this is going to hurt -me- but something seems a bit off on the composition. Its just one persons opinion-who by the way is years away from your skill level- but it seems a little light one the top of the painting. I would love to hear your thoughts on this if you have the time. Thanks for posting.

March 19th, 2003, 03:41 PM
this is a nice piece. love the scale, comp.
nothing about the anatomy or perspective bothers me personally

my 2 cents--

the shape that is created by her left leg and where it meets the dudes head (on the right)is a little wierd for me. if you look at it abstractly it almost looks like that leg is coming out of teh head--but maybe by lining up the edges like that you were trying to create a shape...?

the red x's are a little flat compared to the rest of teh rendered parts of the bottom figures

these are small nitpicky things that are prob just personal preference--keep up the great work!!!---ty

wow, I like this painting a lot. The only thing which bugs me is the position of the gun in her left hand, but that is pretty minor. OVerall I think it's great. Very inspirational.

wow! I love the gesture of the lady! breathtaking!

I would love to see something painted traditionally! Do you have any quick paintings done in oils btw? I'm currently working with them in my life drawing class, and man is it hard. I'm slowly progressing, but anything you can throw my way would be great.

Can you post the oil painting of this that you did before you scanned it? I'm just really interested in your process! :)

foster
March 19th, 2003, 05:54 PM
thanks for all the comments and suggestions! i will address those that stand out in my mind.

sorry to say for any that wanted to see the scanned oil that there is none. that is what i meant when i mentioned my fear of loosing any facility i might have had in traditional media.

fozzy you will help me! when it comes back to you let me know so that i can believe it is possible.

this one was done in painter and photoshop like all the others for the past year or so! good grief! maybe i need to throw a brick through the monitor to get off the habit. sit down, lean back, don't need to mix color, don't need to clean brushes, can hit multiple undoes, can resize, edit, cut and paste with the click of a button (or two), shrink, warp, fade, saturate all with ease! and that is just the beginning. i'm not sure i should go back to traditional media except that i have this feeling that my work is just not the same, not as good, or lacking soul. it feels incomplete.

well enough of that! felt good to say though.

o.k., who gets in funks monthly, you know the classic artist funk where you have no idea what you are doing. anyone? by the looks of what i see on this site you all are doing magnificently and full of creative energy. no funk out here!

love the word funk.

I totally love this one! Mostly because of the figure in the background, and the weird creature at the bottom. The textures are extremely well rendered.
I really like also the contrast between the shiny leather and the rough cloth ot the figures.
Excellent!
Powerful!

yo foster, this piece is TIGHT! i love it! i especially like the figures along the bottom and the figure in the back. the central figure is stunning as well. i know your concerns about digital and traditional media, i struggle with it often as well. my advice, PAINT A CANVAS!! i think there's something very tactilly satisfying about doing traditional that you just dont get with the computer. it feels more tangible to me, and i think working traditionally keeps me sane, in a way. i Reek of funk. i'm constantly finding myself uninspired or feeling as if i'm stagnating somehow. i'm realaizing the older i get that its just a cycle i go through. i think one of an artists biggest fears is losing his ability, or edge, and a lack of creative inspiration causes this. i wish someone knew the end all cure for these feelings, but i find that no matter how low i may get creatively, i'll alway sfind my way back on course and some new obsessive creative spurt will take over my life again. its the artists curse... like a bipolar disorder, kinda .i think its great that you share these feelings, because i'm sure we all feel them from one time to another, and its nice to know that even the super bad asses get them as well. i realize that you are human after all, not some state of the art image producing machine, as i first thought. again, great image, now go get a real canvas and REALLY paint something!-c36

pick up a brush! You know you wanna! Personally I just find so much more appeal in the traditional pieces you have done. Conceptually your work has always been strong, but I know from you speaking you've been working on your aesthetic ideas. Painting takes forever and the finish usually takes a bit of digital touching, and with your current popularity I'm sure you want to finish things faster so you can get more work. However figures seem so much more solid when done in a traditional medium.

I guess what spawned this is the fact that I see the background imitating what you used to do with oils, but its so much more... yummy with real paint. Thats me.

Of course, I do really love it! Really!

P.S. You teaching anything besides sophomore drawing next time? I didn't get in your class :-(

here is a partial compilation of the various steps i save at. it obviously is too small to serve any other purpose than showing all the wrong directions i went. well that is even hard to see but it makes an impressive list of files in a folder.

also check out david dorman's web site here.

http://www.wastedlands.com/

he is a an amazing artist and the one who started this venture of "the uninvited" you will get lots of background bits and pieces of del's writing to wet your appetite.

hi joshuathejames, great to hear from you. yep i did that cover. or perhaps i should wait to find out what you think of it before owning up to it.

ironspy, have we met yet? i teach on monday afternoons in rm 202. stop by if you want to get some drawing in. as for other classes, they are still arranging schedules and faculty so i am not sure i will be teaching anything in the future.

thanks to all for their enthusiasm!

Jon : Just a little funny thing: the color scheme you used for this piece reminds me of the colors of the conceptart board here...
It's quite the same tones, like if you did this on purpose...
I don't know if you worked on it, thinking of it and on its integration here on the board :)

Or more possible, this place had maybe influenced you in a such way, unconsciously...:)

Conceptart addict :)

Hey Foster. This is really good stuff! I love the loose yet effective style you have going there.

I just have one question for you though.

You wouldn't happen to be a fan of artist Phil Hale's work by any chance, would you? I was analysing the style of the woman's face, the way the flesh is rendered, and just the entire style of the peice, the loose painted look, reminds me of Phil's stuff. Everything down to the pose style complete with the 'pinched facial look'.
Not that its a bad thing if this is indeed the case. Every artist has his / her inspirational art god.

In any case, excellent job! Can't wait to see more.

Cheers, on me,

:chug:

All the showing of steps and technique has really helped me in these past months.

So, I was wondering - does this image have anything to do with an old graphic novel by by Dave Dorman titled Rail...? The characters seem sort of familiar....something cooking with that book?
