--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Uziel:
concept: It runs, jumps and swims thru sewer...and it smells.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y231/jarrafatti2/sewer5bright.jpg
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
GreenTopaz:
concept: it pretty much spends its days crawling around the deeper and darker parts of city sewers, eating up anything that ends up stuck underneath it or on its slime trails... though most living things know to avoid them, cause of the horrible squelching noises it makes as it moves on land...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Genital Eclipse:
concept: The Moolarcher Sewer Beast is not known for it's witty banter or poliltical views, but for it's consitent appetite for human waste. The Moolarcher dangles from the ceilings of urban sewers suckling up bits of the brown wonder water below with it's dangly doo-dads or 'suckle duckles'.
The Moolarcher has a tendency to scare away most other sewer inhabitants due to it's constant wailing, which sounds sort of like "mooo-cockkkkkkkkaaaaaa-noooooooo-pantalonesssssssssssssssssssss'. Which in Moolarcher means 'ba-da-ba-da-ba i'm loving it.'
On a side note, if I were a Moolarcher, i'd play Guild Wars 24/7.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xpose:
concept: Not to be confused with the term Metrosexual the Metrosaur lives in the sewers of New York City. It's main source of food are the giant rats that live in the underground maze. Two times a year they are nearly killed off (Thanksgiving day and Super Bowl Sunday) by the extreme amounts of sewage, but the food supply is so sufficient they don't dare leave.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
MIKECORRIERO:
concept: RIBBITS
Don't ever flush mr. frog down the toilet, unless your 100% damn sure he's dead..because 20 years later you can bet your ass after he pumbles you..he'll make sure YOUR DEAD.

shadoman:
concept: Sewer Beast
Alexander Heilbronner was Hitler’s top nuclear research scientist in Berlin, Germany in 1943. In June of 1944, he received a special order to build a massive new weapon, he took a team of specialists to Dresden, Germany to a small, research facility 100 feet below in a cavern. One day, after months of failed experiments, he went down near the underground stream to eat lunch. He was there confronted by two of Hitler’s assassins about his lack of progress on the new weapon. A struggle ensued, he was shot and fell into the water where he floated downstream.
With all of the raw, nuclear waste that was dumped into this waterway from his experiments, he was mutated into the Klärschlamm Rohling, or Sewer Beast. Some say they can still hear him to this day, hissing and slithering through the sewers of Dresden, eating anything that comes in its path.

leckronium:
concept: Midnight Stinkers
Log Report:
James R. Zilk
Patrol Area 614-a
Midnight, 6-22-36
On my last rounds of the night before my shift was over, I decided to head east to get a cup of coffee before heading home. Taking the back alley way, parallel to Front St., I witnessed a strange event that locals say happen every night, the running of the Midnight Stinkers.
My first sighting was odd. All I could see was a manhole cover running towards me with what looked like a shadow carrying it from underneath. It ran by me quickly, not even giving me a glance to see what I was or what I was going to do. I got out of the car and ran after it, not because I didn't know what it was, but rather it had taken a piece of city property and I wanted to make sure it was put back to avoid any further accidents.
When I got to the end of the alley I was surprised to see more coming from all different directions. Some ran alone while some ran in packs as if they were racing. I lost track of the one I was chasing, as it darted off into another alley. I spotted a pair this time that were rather slow, slower than the first one I chased, and decided to follow them to see where they were headed. After about a block and a half there was a sewer with no lid and both seemed to be headed directly for it. The smaller of the two managed to get to it first and dove head first down the hole, closing the entrance with the cover it was carrying on its head. The other slammed into the cover but got right back up and continued on, apparently, looking for another opening. I followed it some more, passing fewer beasts as the minutes ticked by, and finally to an open hole that was three blocks away from where I got out of the car. After finally catching up I realized that everything was back to normal. I walked back to the car and drove around looking for any openings that didn't have a cover yet could not find one.
I would like to suggest a study that marks each sewer lid with a specific marking and tracks it to its new spot each night. This, I think, would help us understand these creatures better and might help solve some of the city's problems. One thing I did notice was that during that whole time, all I could smell was raw sewage. So it might not be that easy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Main Loop:
concept: Sewer Boar
Large claws help it dig underground to find its favorite sludge and refuse.. it can consume twice its bodyweight in garbage daily. It would be great for humans if it didnt break through sewer pipes with its teeth to find food..
http://www.remtek.net/0/mainloop/default/images/13/255.jpg
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
redehlert:
concept: Phylphs
Phylphs are loathsome, wandering creatures inhabiting southern subteranean waterways scrounging for any bloated meal that floats on by. An incredible sense of smell and sight aides them in their scavenging ways. Their cares are few and find the sewer systems to work quite nice at growing the nutrient rich shrooms that sprout upon their shoulders to supplement their odd cuisine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
ThrillzillA:
concept: THE DEMANIGATOR
This little creature the size of an orange lives in the sewers. But why is he called Demanigator ? Well his catchphrase is:"If you are doing your business like a girl, your in for a raise!!. He will attack people when they least espect it , the toilet. Let's say your on teh toilet and you going to take a whizz. He will wrap his long tail around a sewage pipe or roster in the sewer then climb up the toilet, defalting and inflating to crawl across the drainage pipe of the toilet. He then will stay at it's place and wait for it's pray to take a comfy seat on the toilet. He especially like the guys peeing sittign down (living in the sewer doesn't mean he likes to be pooped on) becasue he got a clear shot at the good old twins. He take a launch at your ghoulies, and if he gets them he will wrap around them and he plunges his teeth around your marbles still holding on to his anchor point in e sewer. You then can try and make a run for it, but remember this critter got strong jaws and ditto tail so leaving the toilet is not as easy (or painless ) as one may think. If you van get off the toilet he will still keep his position and continually act as a parasite on your sac. When leaving or getting agitated he will bite the whole thing off. You better buy them MC hammer parachute pants....

OK - before voting/posting read this!!!

1. Please give c&c or a reason why you voted for the image!

2. Feel free to comment on any or all entries, the artists will appreciate it!

Note:
not accepted entries:

possessed quote from posting-thread:"Ok, possessed i appreciate that you didn't give up, i am happy about that, which makes me not feel like the art-director from hell, but i think i have to say that i can't see a real creature on your image...there is no clear anatomy, which makes me say "ah...ok, there it is...there is the head with its eyes and the body etc"...there are colored areas which look like a very very blurry anatomy of something which could be a creature...there is no real definition, but that's what concept-art is about - there is a detaile concept behind so there must be something defined to show..."

hallo There was only a WIP in the posting-thread...

other entries, which made me thinking about taking them to the poll at all:

Main Loop hmmm...it's just a boar (with a tail and back legs of a rat)...

My vote goes to shadoman :

Love the story (though it reminds me of "The thing from the swamp" or so - don't know the title), but it's cool to imagine that there is something in the sewer like this :) lovely rendering too...

other favs:

Genital Eclipse: Awesome rendering and mood...but it seems that you "modelled" your concept after doing a cool sewer-creature :) Also the slightly humanoid look pushed me to shadomans entry...

leckronium: Cool rendering as always and very creative concept!!! The creature itself isn't that breath-taking ;), but your concept called for this look...

darn, was working on a better version ...

I love the rendering on the head on Metrosaur, I wish you would have aplied it all over it's skin. Still get's my vote though.

Has to be some of the best concept writing as a whole, well done everyone!
My vote went to Shadowman - loved your story, the angle you chose was dynamic and all I wanted to see was more time on coloring the character with milky greys, blues, purples, etc. to marry with your greens. Great job!
My runner up was Leckronium with a superbly funny story and very compelling sense of motion and character correlation with the story. Like Shadowman's, your creature was plausible. In fact, what I really liked about yours was that this was several creatures whereas Shadowman's was just a solo beastie....like I said, it was a tough call!
Small turnout this week....makes it easy to do crits at least! I think I'll try to do some.
Cheers,
D

Fozzy-

I have absolutely no comprehension of what you mean in your first comment.

The second comment about being humanoid. I really don't care. It's a creature, loosen up a tad. :grandpa:

I voted for Xpose, because he's my boy and I can see that his hardwork and constant contribution to this thread is paying off.

The second comment about being humanoid. I really don't care. It's a creature, loosen up a tad.

Easy, if you don't agree with a comment/crit you can just ignore it, you don't have to scream it out.
I love your creature but it looks more like an alienqueen than a sewercreature to me.

Mike, thats some f*cked up muppet you got there :P . Very amusing

GreenTopaz: very nice, vrey slimy, like a sewer. I think I'll vote for you.

shadoman: Nice creature, looks mutated

redehlert: The anatomy doesn't feel right

Main Loop: Try to be original. a boar with a rats tail it's so...not original.

Even though the number of entries was a bit disappointing, there was some great variety on display here. Great jobs from Mike, GreenTopaz and Leckronium. My favourite this time around was Shadoman though - you get my vote.

Yes Fozzy, I didn't get to work on my pic any more, it's been a quite labourious week for me.

My vote goes to GreenTopaz - Great picture, really slick and clean presentation. Plus it's a cool creature.

Very cool entries this week, not very many but, still pretty cool. Shadowmans, Green Topaz, Genial Eclipse, leckromium was pretty neat too.

But ultimately I had to vote for Matt Dixon, awesome work!! :hatsoff:

Ok Redehlert her we go.
1st the arms: they look elastic (right elbow missing?) and the upper arm is very small when the lower arm becomes heavier at the wrists.
Same thing with the legg it becomes wider when you go to the knee.
2:the schoulder-humps are not good positioned. one is more up front than the other.
3:Hips? where are they? And i would have given the creature more bodyweight.
When i read sewer Beast i don't expect a skinny little fella :teeth:
So i drew a very fast impression of his big bro to give you an idea how I look at your creature, perhaps fozzy would have called it too humanoid.

top3:

1.shadoman
2.MIKECORRIERO
3.leckronium

All done a good job, shadoman's design was the most inspiring concerning the subject "sewer", as well for mikey's design and leckronium.
Others were nice too, but i missed the sewer-theme somehow.

Well, the deadline was over for hours (like always)...i close the rounds always that late to give everyone a fair chance, but still there are some WEIRDOS like you who cant make it in time ;)

Genital Eclipse
It was just my personal impression...you don't need to care, but if everyone would react like you, there would be no motivation to comment on someones piece...with my first comment i meant, that your creature doesn't look like what you would expect after reading the concept. Not at all. There is no relation between your creature-design and your concept, which made me think that you "just" drew a cool creature, put it in a sewer-like environment and then wrote something funny, just to have a concept-text beneath your pic...it's just this thing, which i crit...your design, drawing and rendering is awesome as i said...no hard feelings, just honesty...

BeatnikArtCritic
Ok, i nearly was in the same reflex-behaviour like you:
1. open voting-thread of cow
2. clicking "post reply"
3. writing that Matt Dixon had a killer piece and that i voted for him

...but WAIT!!! There was no Matt this time...the difference between you and me was that i noticed it before posting :)

I voted for green topaz entry because of his concept.

Genital eclipses entry is better rendered (The concept is boring though).

Main loops entry has really nice colors. It just doesn't look finished enough, and the concept is boring too.

Wow, thanks everyone for the votes. I didn't think I would get any at all this week since I really didn't have the time to work on it like I usually do. I thought my story was good but the execution didn't quite turn out like I had in my head. The only thing I liked about it was the sewer lid. I attempted to redo the background but just didn't have it in me this week. Maybe I need a break and just don't want to admit it. :[

And now for this weeks comments:

Uziel - This could have been pushed a little further. It's a good start but still a little hard to see the creature.

GreenTopaz - Very nice entry. I like the scale you gave the creature and the concept reminds me of having snails in an aquarium. It's good to know there is something cleaning our sewers ;)

Genital Eclipse - Nicely rendered piece of artwork. I like the composition and the mood you created. I think the whole concept of something being attached to its surroundings by cables/cords/umbilical lifelines/whatever has been overdone though. This thing really doesn't remind me of something you would ever see since it looks as if it can't move 10 ft. Plus I have to give negative points for linking your concept to one of the worst advertising campaigns out there right now. I stopped watching tv a long time ago because of crap like that. Please don't make me tune out conceptart! :P

Xpose - very creepy looking creature. I think you're in the same position as Uziel though, creature is still a little difficult to make out.

MIKECORRIERO - The concept was funny and I liked the color and texture you put into it. The only thing that turned me off was the generic frog pose that kind of killed the energy to the piece. Where the feet or toes go into the water is kind of awkward for the size of the creature. Great water though.

Shadoman - Very cool entry this week. I like the concept and the rendering is very nice. I would have liked to see a little variation to the color palette though. I think the greens tend to turn a little too cool for a sewer setting. Good job :teeth:

Leckronium - So, an eight-legged turd with a sewer lid on its head walks into a bar... :nohope:

Main Loop - While I can see yours a lot better than Uziel's or Xpose's, The lighting could still be improved. Plus I think it's looking exactly like a boar which isn't being creative. You could still keep the same features that a boar has but change something major about it that gives the eye doubt to what it is exactly. This could be changing the size or length of the head, moving the position of the eyes, extending or replacing teeth, etc...

redehlert - I like the look you gave this piece. The composition and mood is good and the concept has a slight twist to it. I think the look of the creature may have not been very eye catching. Maybe if the pose was a little more dramatic?

ThrillzillA - I'm really afraid of this creature and will never sit down to pee ever. :$

I ended up voting for Shadoman. I think it caught my eye the most and was overall well executed.

Uziel. Your written description is clearly something of an afterthought, which is a shame as it would have been nice to think there was more thought behind the interesting visual design on your creature. Your rendering isn't helping sell your creation either; there are lots of points I could raise here, but the main fault with your image is the poor value placement which allows your beast to get lost in the background. It looks as if you were trying to illuminate just a portion of your creature in a pool of light, but that doesn't mean everything else has to go to mush - you should have tried to make sure that significant parts of the creature's silhouette remained visible ( however subtle ) with a difference in value between subject and background.

GreenTopaz. Nice job. Again, it would have been nice to get a few more details from your written concept as it doesn't really add to your image as it stands, but the creature design is cool. Are you aware that you seem to make a lot of narrow marks when rendering? It almost looks as if you're "sketching with colour" if that makes any sense. Perhaps you might look at using broader, bolder strokes when you paint? I think this would ultimately give you more control over your painting, and is certainly a more efficient way to work if you're comfortable with it. An observation more than a crit.

Genital Eclipse. Some more text that, though humourous, seems largely irrelevant to the image. An image which, though attractive, seems laregly irrelevant to the topic. It's a good concept image, and your economical technique is solid, but there really don't seem to be many concessions to the sewer environment other than your palette. Maybe I'll be proved wrong, but I'd expect you to feature highly in the poll however, as this style of image ( also favoured by Prostate Sunrise and Android ) seems very popular. I'm afraid I don't think you deserve the votes in the context of this topic.

Xpose. The text is pointless, but what we can see of the creature looks believeable. Read my comments on Uziel's entry, because it applies to you also. If you must fade your creature into solid shadow, try to ensure that the forms that are visible are very clearly defined and imply a connection of some kind to the obfuscated portion of the beast.

MIKECORRIERO. That's a good concept piece - we can discern all the important elements of the beast, it's pose and expression communicate something of it's personality and the background lends mood and clearly shows the creature's habitat. I don't get a whole lot of frog from the design however, and I think it would have been more effective with an obviously amphibian element or two in there - thick glistening skin, or frog eyes, for example.

shadoman. Great concept and a good looking image. The pale flesh of your beast is handled nicely. No major crits, but I think some punchy specular highlights to imply some wetness on your creature would go a long way.

leckronium. Well presented description, and your image is great! Your beast shows a great deal of personality and for such a simple picture it has a remarkable narrative quality. Very well done. You choose some very interesting colour schemes in your work, though I notice they often seem to be drawn from a limited palette - perhaps introducing some varying hues would be something to try?

Main Loop. You don't need anyone else to tell you that your beast isn't very exciting. To be fair, a creature that has similarities with "real" animals is not a bad thing and adds to the believeability of your creation considerably, but you'd need to push it just a little further in that case, in my opinion. That said, your painting looks good. I hope Uziel and Xpose take a good look at your piece, as you've handled the fade-to-shadow well on your creature by clearly defining the forms that are visible and placing enough of the beast in the light to allow the eye to successfully "fill in the gaps" even though we can't read it's silhouette.

redehlert. All the elements are there - posed, expressive beast and atmospheric background, but I'm afraid your image falls over in the composition. The vertical break in the middle of the image is very disruptive - especially so as the creature appears boxed off by the archway on the left, and the wall on the right is featureless apart from the torch. Almost two images taped together. I like the one of the left, though. :)

ThrillzillA. So close. The expression on your creature is great, and suits the style of your funny description very well. If only the image didn't look so awkwardly cropped - it's almost as if the beast is squashed to fit the space provided. Your colouring is also very messy - more time here would have been very well spent.

Enjoy the break.

MOO.

Uziel - Nice Entry but it looked like more detail and time was needed to develop it into a stunning entry.

GreenTopaz - I loved this entry, its an all round pleasing piece: nice concept and artwork, the only crit i have is the walls and roof - they just have a strange look about them

Genital Eclipse - This is great artwork but i'm not getting a sewer beast vibe, more of a alien plugged into some sort of matrix style machine

Xpose - Great idea but the rendering of the head is different from the body: the head looks scaly and the body looks matt. The legs are a bit chunky to. If more time was put in this would have been another great piece.

MIKECORRIERO - i liked the concept of the mutant frog, that was perfect but the artwork could have been better - the work i have seen on your employment page is much much better than this.

shadoman - I liked the artowork and concept had some nice ideas in it. My only suggestion is that the water under its arms should be less cartoony - it has a different style to the rest of the piece.

leckronium - I loved this idea - as with much of your work but again this work has its flaws - the creature itself looks a little flat - and the sewer hole seems to be less detailed than the creature

Main Loop - Like foz said, its kinda just a boar with a rats tail - however the style is great

redehlert - Another nice one, however the back wall and the wall next to the creature don't look right angle-wise, wither the front should be sloped towards the viewer more or the back should be sloping away from the viewer

ThrillzillA - I liked this because you have a style that isn't seen here much - Kinda like Quentin Blake (artist for the Roald Dahl books) - It may have been nicer with a background though.

Sorry for the lateness in this response... vacation first.

Thank you all for your kind words, votes, and helpful critiques. I am happy and sad about the COW summer break. It will hopefully draw more users in with more passion, but I will really miss the thread. Time to get out the oil paints...

TOP 3 VOTES:
GreenTopaz - I thought that this image was great. I liked the composition and rendering. The water was good as well as the lighting. And the ickiness of the ooze from the creature sold it. You got my vote.
GenitalEclipse - Great design and the McDonald's reference in the concept. The overall feel to the piece was very Gigerish by the lighting, rendering, and head-on composition. The only thing I think that needed some work was the lack of depth.
leckronium - I loved this concept and the style of the writing as a log. The lighting, rendering, and textures were good, but the difference in style between the creature and the manhole cover threw me off. The creature just seemed more cartoony than that of the manhole cover.

thanks to everyone who critiqued my piece rather than just saying "it looks like a boar" Although thats valid, since i REALLY slacked on the concept and decided to make it rendering practice.. i just dont like to create stuff out of scratch on a wacom.. next time i participate i think i will sketch it out on paper first.. So yeah, even the negative crits help the most

edit: just in case anybody voted for themselves or had buddies vote for them and knew they didnt deserve to win.. shame on you :nohope:

WTF I have a vote? Somebody must have clicked the wrong button.
I think my PS coloring skillz suck, compared with others but I'll work on it during summer didn't had much time lately.
Thnx for the c&c

Shadoman - Thanks for the comments and I agree with the lack of depth comment. Will try to push that further next time. I enjoyed your piece a lot and it definitely achieved more 'sewer' feel than mine!

As far as comments on the story. That's great. My dad has yet to write a serious story for any of my lame CoW entries which obviously hurts the submissions. I apologize for that and will talk to him about being a bit more serious for my future posts.

Tough choice between leckronium and shadoman for me. Creep-crawling, writhing, ugly, miserable things, I easily see both of their creatures living down there with all our gunk. Leck's critter looks like the personification of poop itself! While Shado's slug's orifice looks like that which spews out the stool. Hmm in the end, a coin toss was in order, and so Shado got my vote.

Grats to everyone who joined the last round. Looking forward to seeing COW's resurrection.

leckronium's seems the most realistic and interesting one, got my vote.

I'm not sure "Realistic" is the word. It's more cartoony than real. Main Loop's seems the most realistic IMO< but i still voted fro Green topaz, cause I dig the way she colors. I like dem eyes Gray, they're awesome! (BUt the water seems fairly sketchy.)

There was a special place reserved in my heart for Leckronium's entry the moment I saw it... so I voted for it <3 Many other great ones as well, but you just don't forget your first love...

Again everyone thanks for sending votes my way. I'm glad you enjoyed the concept. From the reaction I'm getting, I now wished I would have spent more time on it to make it look a little better. :^^;:

bluefooted - Really? :bashful: I've been thinking about taking the text and illustrating a few pages to keep me busy over the COW break. If I go through with it I'll be sure to post it for everyone to see. :^^:

Come on now, that's no way to be. I'm sure if all the boys and girls at ArenaNet would stop voting for one another it would probably not come across as a conspiracy. I'm sure that's all that Mike meant by his comment.

Well....for once I'm happy to announce that I tied MikeC! It was a tough battle, but the two votes garnered by each of us was a tough battle to say the least. Let us shake hands and do battle once more in a month. :tihi:
Cheers!
