Hi, I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but I've been looking for help with my Painter for a very long time. I'm so glad I found this forum.

The problem with my Painter 9 is that everytime I try to run it, it won't start and it gives me this error message saying "Can't open file PAINTER.PRE"

It was working beautifully for me up till a few days ago and it's driving me mad because I need to finish up my work in Painter.

I've tried reinstalling it, restarting my computer heaps of times, even tried downloading the trial version but it still won't work. But when I look in that directory, the file Painter.Pre is sitting there grinning back happily at me as if the world is right.

Has anyone experienced this problem before? Please help! I need my Painter to work as soon as possible!

Try a reboot install.....

When you are clicking on the Painter IX icon to open it...at the same time HOLD DOWN THE SHIFT key. This will give you a clean install to the defaults and usually fixes problems like this.

You might also want to take a look and post this over here:

Hope this helps you!!

dominique and charge,

It's only fair to mention that when we hold down the Shift key while launching Painter IX (9.1, or IX.5) the program is reset to its installed state and all custom preferences and other custom settings are lost.

If you've spent time setting up Painter IX the way you want it, and don't realize this will happen, you're probably going to be a bit disappointed.

If you depend on your program being set up the way you want it for a smooth and efficient workflow, it could be more than disappointing.

Solution:

Before holding down the Shift key while launching Painter IX, make a back up copy of your Painter IX User folder so your custom items can be restored later.

Mac - /Users/[User Name]/Library/Application Support/Corel/Painter IX/

Windows - Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Corel\Painter IX
