i kinda like those "crap drawings", too.. keep on doing them, your anatomy seems to be not all bad and the first one is a life drawing, right? always good to do those..
concerning those first few.. you have to learn perspective in order to be good at architectural drawings and such.. be sure to learn the basics before moving on..

first attempt
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4/mowmew/d.jpg
second attempt (I m really cheap when it comes to paper, dont want to spoil any paper when it not nesesary, so doodled on top of this paper :) know it doesnt fit with the drawing beneath it)
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4/mowmew/b.jpg
and third attempt (this is when I realise that the background totally didnt fit the drawing, the pose nor the feeling I wanted to expres.. the character isnt frustrated by nature, that free beautiful field.. thats when I thought: crap did all those attempts for nothing! AGR!) but do tell me what you think about it :)

Keep working--you show a lot of creative potential.. your drawings have an emotional content that is clawing it's way out. Long road to travel but you're young. Check out some of the construction drawing books: hogarth, vilppu, bridgeman. It will help you add dimension to your work (esp. without reference.) keep on. cheers

*hi-jack-mode-on*
You said you were drawing from photos to learn how to draw realistically...i want to suggest that you should draw 10-20 images of one subject (like only faces, only anatomy or only animals -> zoo!) from real life and do the same amount of drawings from photo reference.
You won't need much time, maybe 10-20 minutes on every image...after that show the results friends, family etc and let them judge and judge also for yourself...
I would bet most of your viewers will like the ones with reference from real life better...also you will learn more about light/shadow, form, shapes, anatomy etc...when for example the light conditions change during your drawing session or the reference person moves or the perspective changes etc...
On a side note it's MUCH more fun drawing from real life, it's like watching sports in a stadium...you will experience the same object in a different more intense way compared to watching it on tv...and you can throw popcorn on people and bear the consequences, the question is if this makes much sense when drawing someone :) :perv:

yay...glad someone read it at all :)
The drawing looks very nice so far, but i have a suggestion regardin the composition: the red belt distracts from the focus, though it has not an equally weighted meaning...
maybe weaken the belts intensity a little bit would do the trick, something like this:

check it out, i'm totally digging your art. now, i'm not a very good artist (and i don't have a sketchbook on here, yet, to back up my claims) but I really like your no reference stuff better simply because i feel like you've got an awesome style just waiting to ooze out of you. of course, on a technical note, doing drawings from reference (pictures and life) is an outstanding way to learn, but the style of drawing hyper realistically is (in my opinion) vastly overrated. it takes practice to learn how to draw realistically, but i think it takes style to catch someone's eye. My advice, definitely learn to draw realistically for the sake of personal growth and development, but don't forsake your style, and don't neglect your style (keep drawing from your head). awesome stuff!

great work, your style and you skill is very good for a 17 year old....like Foz said mor from life....if you sketch more from life and learn more about antamoy you will be so much farther ahead of other people when you become a professional interms of a skill and built up visual dictionary, and stop using graph paper what a waste of a good drawing...if you are going to draw in class you might as well use good paper !

Cool stuff man, unique style of people looks cool, but my only suggestion is you need to some more say studies or something of anatomy. Life drawing classes are great, do you go to any?. I think you need more variation in body sizes and positions and stuff... life drawing helps immensly, especially when u get the fatties and oldies.. tonnes of varition. Same applies to like faces etc. Looks good though.
This (http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4/mowmew/_1.jpg) is excellent the face and anatomy isnt really excentric so works well. reminds me of Matt Rhodes' work , top notch.

Hello there,
Are you dutch? Saw some dutch text about "morele ontwikkeling" hihi :P
I really like the last things you posted, though it would be nice if you would post newer stuff to give me some idea of how you're doing right now and how you've improved.
I like the poses that give me an idea of movement (like this (http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4/mowmew/ein.jpg) one) and the doodles show a lot of fantasy and imagination.
The figures look very nice..
I think my advice to you would be to do more studies from reference, and get some anatomy studies.. Don't do too much of them for I don't think you like making realistic stuff, but it will always come in handy when you know a bit more about the human body and such.
By the way; What education are you having?

wish I could post some more recently things, but unfortunly enough, my horrible laziness and my cool new classmate keeps me from doodling :bashful:.. I do have some recent paintings I m dying to put it on here somewhere.:bounce:

ehmmm... I went to try out a (nude) life drawing class once, nobody said anything about me being 16.. The teacher almost begged me to sign up for the course (okay that is very exaggerated, I wasn't that good for a first try :P), but I can't because I already have dance class at that time (this year, next schoolyear I'll start the figure drawing course though!)
So, I don't think there's a problem with you following life drawing courses..
It could be that your parents need to give you permission or something, I don't know about that..
But I think it would be weird if they refuse that you take such course because of underageness.
Oh, and on the last update, the necks of the people are too thin and the foreheads are too small.
But nice update!

(waw you commented twice in a day .. I feel honoured *giggle*)
erms.. well here is the thing, I live in a very small town, there is a litle afterscool-artschool here, where you can only follow live drawing classes if you are over 18 or just finished secundary school. Cuz if not you have to go to classes where they kinda teach you all diffrend kinda ways to create art, after you finished high school you can choose which way you want to go: painting, live drawing classes, keramiek.. so..bla
but dont like that artschool anyways, m just waiting till I finished high school so I could sign myself in.. although I am doubting between painting or live drawing clases, cuz you cant do both..
hey thank you for the critic, I really never ever noticed I drew my forheads too small.. and thin long necks.. thats just something I will never have but I want my characters to have.. I know what youre thinking.. this way I ll never be able to draw realistic.. but... agr.. no buts.. you got me there...
anyways, thanks for everything and I wish you all the luck and fun (which you ll probably have) with the classes next year..

Hey S+A, thanks for the peek at my SB and I'm returning the favor. I just got finished looking through you images and I like what I see. I would say to keep working on anatomy and sketch anything and everything. You really seem to fly when you experiment with different images and colors and I like to see that kind of exploration. The figure curled up with the fire blazing in the background was a really interesting image. Keep at it.

Hey what's up man. You've got some cool looking schtuff.
This isn't quite as important yet as some of the other things other guys have probably hit on. Anyway, i think your faces are all looking somewhat similar to one another. Maybe you're just using the same refs or person for each one, but if you aren't, just try drawing some really different looking people compared to what you're used to. They don't have to be supermodels- just draw anybody. I don't think this is quite as important in the beginning stages than focusing on things like line quality, but i figure people already touched on those subjects. Anyway, keep up the good work!

@ Sith: I think your comment is very usefull and I thank you for that. You are totaly right, I really always draw the same faces. Think that is because I m not used to drawing other faces, dont know why, but for all the rare times I try to draw from a reference, the face always look the same face like I always draw.. need to practise on that guess :).. anyways thanks a lot for your comment :)
Forced myself to draw from a ref, I m really not used to that, cuz in one way or the other, it feels like stealing.. used to really be anti-drawing from ref.. but think kinda realised that that is nesecery to become a better 'artist'

Hey! These are really good, just keep values and line weight in mind. The way you draw is a bit stylish, I'd say go for a more realistic direction, when you know how things are Supposed to be it's cool to make your own variations then. So nothing else to add than what has already been said.
Well... I guess I'll just say the classic phrase. 'Keep it up!' --d

Hello there!
Those last few updates are very nice! I think the drawings from ref are good, and they will learn you a lot.
I agree about drawing different faces. Oh, and maybe try drawing a face of a very old person, or a fat person? Or just someone average who isn't a supermodel. I think you can find a lot of things in those faces you cant find in the average "vogue" picture, and who knows, maybe you'll like some of those features.
I like your pen sketches a lot! I never really draw with pens, but maybe I should try it out too sometimes, it looks very nice in your sketches hihi.
Keep drawing and posting!

As for your conundrum with no life drawing classes, have you tried getting a friend to pose for you? I'm 17, and had a girl I barely know posed for me in her underwear, under the condition that I gave her the pictures once I was done. So I got in some practice from a live model, and she got some drawings she really liked. Everybody wins. This won't work if all your friends are prudish, though, but it's worth a shot.
If that fails, or if you're too shy to ask, just try sitting down in a coffee shop and drawing people around you. People are usually too wrapped up in themselves to notice if someone is drawing them. It's better to do this in summer since people will be wearing less clothes, and thus, will be closer to a nude model. You still get a feel for gesture either way.
Goodluck, and keep it up.

@ OldNoobie : danke :)
something I strted painting when it was already like midnight.. soo tired
I m trying to use the advice I got here, to use other colours for shading, very scary ... but very proud of the result
used a ref, its not finished yet, planning to paint a lot of flowers around her, but still doubting bout which one and which colour... I know her mouth is weird, I could correct it with photoshop, but it wouldnt make any diffrend cuz in the real one, I cant change it anymore so bla.. the real version
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4/mowmew/ab018.jpg
used the same picture before last year, when I was too chicken to use diffrend colours.. didnt even finish the picture cuz I chickend out...:nohope:

Neat style going on here - elegant, but not prissy...I likethe fine art/big eye painting feeling, and the way you use pen (classical american illustrator style? you like the gibson girl type illo?)

Miro lol, no offence taken, why would I? there is nothing wrong with studying humane wetenschappen, but those were sketches on some stuff van 6 de middelbaar
thanks for the comment :) see you around neh?
Don-key thanks :) and... maybe?
marc_taro thank you :) I like to paint it big eyed indeed :cheerleader:
euhm, dont sure know what you mean with classical american style.. and then completley lost me with the gibson thing... the actor?:bashful:
sorry..:bashful:
I dont know lot of artists or styles.. I try to keep my artmind pure.. or something like that..:bashful: weird that people always say, I can see that influence and that influence in your art.. maybee arty thoughts are limited?even if you want to stay serene, you get the same ideas?dunno

Hey Sopor, thanks for the message in my sketchbook
Nice style you got going, reminds me of this guy http://www.dadaly.net/
Funny how in your ref drawing you do the same thing as in your regular drawings, blow up the proportions of the eyes. Mayby you should see drawing from life or from ref just as an exercice for yourself. No need to think of it as stealing, you're not selling those drawings. Just learning how to draw better.
Mayby try drawing some full body poses, you're mostly doing head and torsos.
The problem of drawing the same faces over and over seems to be improving in this last batch. Lot's of different characters, nice hairstyles! Keep going!

Can you make enough money from art to survive?
I dont know
I dont only want to have enough money to survive, but I also want to have enough to travel a lot
So till now I havent dared to make the big art-school-step
I m kind of hoping to make it into the art world without an art-diploma
or is that impossible?
anyho I doubted for so long I finally had decided to do an art-entree-exam
in like the best school for design in the whole world
didn t pass because of my lack of motivation
but it still was the most wonderfull experience in my life
never saw so many creative people together
I doubt a lot
here are some pictures of drawings I made during that exam

hey, why didn't you ever show me this sketchbook? You've been drawing longer then I have :)
Anyway, I saw some really good stuff I didn't know you could do (/did) I think you should start uploading your stuff here again.
Also I think you'll improve quickly by doing live (nude) drawings, you'll do some at school.... And also draw some ugly people ;) to bring some more diversity and broaden your range!

I really like your sketching style and teh way you draw/shade faces. its a very distinctive style that works nicely. Your drawing class studies show real proportions and a very good eye for them and values. The colours on the last one look very muddy/not appealing. Try changing them a little!
