distinguishing from local color

Here is my situation; I am having trouble when trying to render objects from life. It is very hard for me to distinguish the difference between the local color and the different shades. How or what can I do to get better at this. I would greatly appreciate any help from you.

here's what i do.....
color is relitive, you can't! tell the color of one object, or one section rather, without compairing it to the color next to it. it's all about the relationships of things. someone will seem darker next to a lighter color, something will seem lighter next to a darking color.
