Hi there. I'm very interested in learning Painter, but have very little experience with traditional media (aside from pen & ink). I want to explore the world of digital painting, but I find that I'm lacking more than simple tool knowledge. Would it be a good idea to buy a book on actual oil (or watercolor) painting & learn to paint within Painter? I'm talking about sitting down in front of my computer & tablet with a "how to oil paint" book & going through the tutorials therein with painter. It that a silly idea?

If it makes sense, does anyone have a recommendation for the book I use? I have a long background in figure drawing, and I've been using Photoshop professionally for 8 years now, with a Wacom tablet, so I don't feel that the learning curve with painter should be too problematic. I also have a subscription to Lynda.com, in case I come up against a Painter problem. I just need some painting know-how.

:)

...Ok, I'm going to simplify my question in the interest of getting an answer:

What's a good book for a beginning painter? There are a million out there. I want one that gets deep down into technique & theory.

I always recommend Jeremy Suttons Painter IX and Chers Painter IX WOW books....you can see an in depth review of Cher and her book at the www.digitalpaintingforum.com forums. Michael Campbell interviewed her personally.

These two books should give you enough to do for a long time...
