What’s crackAhLating'yall?
I have a question; I have never taken a regular art class before I’ve taken 3 oil painting. 2 Illustration (markers, color pencil, acrylics) I intend to take life drawing next along with story telling. The question is this; if I draw a character what would be a good method to determine where the shadows go. Can I just use an orange or something of the sort hit it with some light and go from there? What would you do or how would you approach this? Anything and everything is appreciated.

if your drawing an orange, use an orange... if your drawing a person use a person. i know i've said this a lot in this and other forums but it still stands.

figure out what your character's pose is, then ask a friend to stand/sit in that pose and shine a light on them. study the shadows and what they do.

the best way to figure out a problem is from life. there's no way around it.

I'm less then a newbie but I try to help you as much as I think I can.
Buy a spot light and work in the evening. The goal is to work with only one light source at first and on complex forms.
I've bought myself a statue replica of Moses by Michelangelo - unfortunately now, my spot light just borke (i'll fix it this weekend).
Place first the light above or in a 3/4 position and draw what you see. Try drawing only the darks and work where the light meltts with the dark areas.
Use only few values - 2, 3 max in the beginning.
Use crayon or charcoal on paper - try only few before going digital.
Later you will buy two more spots and use them for lighting effects.
I hope I didn't make a foul out of myself - and that this helps in some way.
