Is there a substitute for the tria inks coro uses that could give a similar effect? :bashful: I know I'm being cheap and I should get the real deal, but I can't afford it heh heh.

ive tried computer ink and these colored calligraphy inks and they just dont compare...

but i guarantee you, if you use the EXACT materials i use, it'll get youa lot closer to how i do it. think of it like a recipe, if you dont have sugar and the recipe calls for it, and you use salt instead, its not going to turn out the same. i'm all for experimentaion, and i'm sure there's probably an easier way to do it, but in the 10 years i've been drawing continuously in my books this is the best combination of materials i've found for getting the most out of a piece of paper.

the tria inks are ink from marker and they will not buckle your page unless you add alcohol to them. (they alcohol based) you cant beat geting good colors down without buckling and streaking in your sketchbook. they a bit pricey bu worth it. i bought about 40 of them at $7 a pop over the past 2 yrs

It was also Coro who said, don't go cheap when looking for art supplies. Quality usually comes at a price (although there are times when cheaper things work just as well) - but this is not one of those times.
Cut down on spending in a different area (drink/food/whatever) and go to www.letraset.co.uk and order a couple of Tria 6-packs. They're well worth it, and last a lot longer than you might expect.

The extra expense is definitely worth it... anyway, I've never even HEARD of a different brand of alcohol-based inks that get the same effect as the Tria ones.
Can you get Copic inks in bottles? That might be worth checking out... the Copic markers tend to be cheaper than the Tria markers.

Probably adding a fuel-grade alcohol will work temporarily. It sorta worked with 70% alcohol so it might do better. Just don't use it near flame.

If you want an alternative, you could just buy yourself a set of tria markers, or have a friend do some swatches with tria markers in your sketchpad, scan, and then turn them into a color pallete for use in photoshop or whatever digital imaging program you prefer. That's an experiment you could try out.
