View Full Version : DSG 780: Environment: MONSTER ISLAND

I'm posting this a little early since yesterday's topic generated so small a response.
.
As a child, your imagination probably bubbled with its first exposure to the concept of a Monster Island.
What a miraculous notion: An island so remote that it hasn't been charted... Thick with lush vegetation fed by the nutrient rich volcanic soil... and then the kicker, the thing that makes it brilliant and exciting... it's teeming with monsters. Weird descendents of dinosaurs and other prehistoric beasts... some things that may have even originated elsewhere... Who knows where these things came from. How incredible, how perfect a set-up for the young believers amongst us. Our imaginings of what else might lurk there would linger with us for days, if not years.
Well... if any of that rings a bell, then now's the time to tap into that magic and honor your former, younger, self with something that would've stirred just such a reaction.

When it comes to giants everything takes longer, especially when it concerns juveniles on vacation... For the last several hundred years, Jorge's mom has been trying to get him out of the water, of course, but he's having way too much fun.
painter, 45? more?

Hasta Your recent works are much better than the ones I've seen from you when I joined the DSG, at last I can see details, keep it up!
Yaso Kuuhl Yours appeals to me the most as for now. Nice for the eyes and with an ok concept.
Monkeylizard Cool and fresh. Nice graphic ideas.
xenos Not too entertaining, but I like the dinos in the bg and your style.Could you tell me what brush settings do you use?
machzero Also moderately interesting. I'd like some more ambience, but it's hard to do with your style.
Eriboss Tim Burton is cool, isn't he? :) A pity you didn't have time.

Hmm, havent had time to do more than 20 mins of work on this one. But I should be back more regularly now that I'm done with my deadline.
yes, it's an amusement park, just think of the money the monsters could make.

Been a long time since I've done a DSG, and I could definitely do with the practice.
A scribbly monster island.

eh, yknow, all those "children's" books with really creepy monsters used to scare me when I was a kid. I think doctor moreau (the book) pretty much sums up the whole "monster island" thing for me. . .anyway, something a little more subtle.

Man, the bg got really screwed up, but I'm trying to spend less time on these "speedpaints," so thusly it will stay. There's some other people doing some awesome work on this topic. . .

Edit: Once again, special kudos to William B. Hand for the great, well-though out topics. </edit>
As an excercise for myself, but if they happen to be helpful, that's good too . . . :
monkeylizard : Welcome! You'll find this an awesomely fun thing to do, and stuff will start to come faster. . .don't worry too much about context, the topic is mainly meant as an inspiration, not a formal assignment, although you can treat is as such. By the way, I really like your use of warm and cool tones in the backside of the mountain and especially in a little bit of the sky above and to the right of his head - that's really cool.
xenos : That's really cool. Imitating your use of color in digipainting is going to be *my* next step. If I were to make a suggestion, it might be to make the important elements of your image readable from a distance - the t-rex type thingy, although it's really important to the story you're depicting, took me a while to notice. Awesome job!
machzero - good to see complete image, I always admire the detail you put into your dsg's. . .If you ever find yourself with some time, try doing a ballpoint or other pen line drawing from a photograph, with the intent of achieving a variety in line shapes - even one of these can be super helpful.
yaso : that is indeed awesome - eyecatching and well rendered. The only thing that bothers me is the horizon line - it's super sharp and straight (kinda like a horizon, I know. . .eh) and doesn't really seem to fit with the awesome style of painting in the rest of the image.
hamsta : dude, you and machzero amaze me with your diligence in posting. Very cool. . .someone else mentioned the increase in detail :hip:
eriboss : I really can't comment - that's exactly the kind of thing I was talking about:S Good interpretation of the topic, though.
will chill : pretty cool, I like some areas, such as the sea/beach transition, but be careful with using a (filter?) like that all over. You'll notice that experianced painters will only leave a stroke texture like that in certain areas. . .
wethamster : sorry man, I'd really like to comment, but I can't honestly tell what's goin on . . .that and
nogrindnoshine : hmmm. . .know exactly what you mean. I think my first dsg was about five hours and total crap. Perhaps a suggestion: you seem to be drawing the image (detailed, finished line drawing, more or less) and then coloring/shading it in detail. Just for the dsg/speedpaint type stuff, try a more painterly approach - where you lay down large masses of color and gradually work from the larger shapes down through the fine details.
advocate : ya, that's actually kinda funny. . .
flip : nice, striking image . . . probably the biggest danger of digipainting is the awful perfectly round brushes, try to conceal them, even in a speedpaint. Great piece, though; I'm really enjoying how you worked through the spectrum from warm to cool, and your reflection is schooling me. . .
jkior : you need to uh. . .use the um. . .oh. yeah.

Jakub Sudra - there is no style... it's just a damaged 4x5 wacom with no pressure sensitivity and an old 15" monitor... heh. The cursor jitters all over the screen unless I switch to larger "pixels" for the brush.
jkior - thanks for the comment! i'm trying to improve my composition plus other things. Which means I'll attempt some perspective, anatomy (still sucking hard), and mechanical designs in each DSG if possible. Did a "new year's resolution" started february... 365 pics, daily if possible. But a lot of it are thumbnail style pics... like this one. BTW, haven't touched my prized set of pens for almost two years already. My weapon of choice was stippling... but that does terrible things to the wrist... heh.

jkior mmm... mushrooms... oh, those are trees. I agree that the bg island is wierd, but not enough to look intentional. I like the over exposed, bright sun effect though, and how certain things blend into each other.
Jakub Sudra nada from you today?
