This is a really nice peice, but it doesn't read as a montage, it reads like a regular illustration with one character that just doesnt seem to fit due to placement. The little guy. He could be removed and I don't think I would miss him being there. Everything in the image is rendered so nicely, and it is a great illustration, but I just don't read a montage.

the backround is perplexing, the angle of the cloaked man and the city seem to conflict and so Im unsure of the perspective. The design is good, I dont care too much for the color scheme of the demon though. Also I think more of the demon should have reflective green hue on his skin, on the arm and the side of the stomache.
The color thing is all prefferal, but I thought Id share with you a 2 minute edit of colors I think make this look spookier and consistant:

That demon reminds me an awful lot of a picture you did a couple years ago. He had the same coins for eyes, a skirt, a sword and similar tattoos. Is it the same character or are you just stealing your own ideas? Either way, this guy looks way cooler and really shows the progress you've made since then. I love the glyphs encircling his arm.

Hey, awesome paint. I disagree with the previous color reedit Ryan did. I like the color variation in the one you painted better, but I agree with him that the background perhaps needs something more. I read this as a bit of a poster piece, where each character ,and the background are on different perspectives, or something, but the background could stand to have a bit of a color shift here and there to unify. Just not to the extent that is shown.

Thanks everyone!
Ryan - I see what you are saying about the green. I actually think it might be a good idea to add a bit of green reflection, but I think I may keep it minimal. Thanks!
Cannibal - Thanks, yeah I see what you are saying about the BG.
Smitherines - Point taken. Perhaps "montage" was the wrong word. Maybe if the definitions of the demon's lower section were "cloudier" or if there was a "fog" in between the demon and the human figure....
Okelvin - Yes, same character. Thanks for noticing!
bluepup - Thanks! I assume you refer to the hand with the fire?

sean- yep, the hand with the fire.
ryanwh- i have to totally disagree with you man. i think that sean has his own style that keeps his stuff very original. also anyone can copy current trends and jump on the bandwagon. also anyone can make a harmonious picture with earthtones.i guess its good to see something other then star wars "remake concepts, dragons, samurais, and women with large tits, and any combination of those(samurai women with large tits, samurai dragons, star wars remakes with large tits). just my opinion.
sean- keep being original and ballsy with your work and youll have at least one person to look at it . ;)

Im not sure what you mean, I dont think inconsistant lighting and hue,and luminous colors which wouldnt exist with such a small lightsource is staying off the bandwagon so much as keeping the picture from coming together completely. thanks for the passive insult though, yay Im a sheep ;)

I find Sean's original colors to be better. I think there is a better contrast between the character and the BG the way he did it. I think you're redo isn't as vibrant as the original. Also, I honestly think it is kind of rude to redo someones picture like that unless they are in dire need of help and teaching.

Whoa whoa! Let's not get into a knock-down drag-out in this thread too!
I see Ryan's point, and it is totally cool to do a paintover, I know he did it to help, not to be a jerk. I may not agree with going THAT far with it, but I definitely think I could take that green and move it into some other areas.
One of the things I see too often these days in movies is this tendency to color shift the entire movie towards one color: Matrix is green, Kingdom of Heaven is Blue, LOTR is Grey, etc. Not that I have a problem with this at all, but I am interested in exploring more colorful images, without being technicolor, like Puddnhead... his color usage is so vibrant, yet not un-realistic.
ANyways, I am flattered that you guys like the color the way it is. I may bring some greens into the parts of his skin that are closest to the flame, but not much more than that.
Now, lets all count to ten!

Hey, Sean great work as always.. im with you on the experimentaton of color... When I do color in images I always try to go against the grain and try do develop contrasts and ideas to fit the characters personality... Usually havnig a color idea already implemented.. But, Puddhead has to be one of the best examples of what your trying to accomplish..l his work is killer!

I've taken up browsing Conceptart.org again recently, and I keep running across your work (the dragon in Mike Corriero's thread being the only example that springs to mind), and I'm always impressed by your use of color.
Looking only at the images, I immediately enjoyed your original. The paintover I saw as an unnecessary "washing-out" of the scene's vibrancy and life. There's something to be said for consistency of lighting and hue, but nonetheless, my eye much preferred the original.
Awesome stuff.

The tapeworms coming out of the guy's ears are a nice touch. :dur:

Ok, just a quick take here, but I really enjoy the piece and wanted to throw in my two cents. The only aspect of the original piece that I think does not mesh well (save from the dude in the back, hell, I don't think I'd be hanging around this guy) are the golden coins over the eyes. I don't really get a Greek feel from him, so they look a little comical. The runes encircling the forearm are wonderful, by the way. It's the little touches like these that make a piece great.
