Proceedure Help

I wanted to know how it is best to deal with a drawing. Should I make a hard copy and then scan it and color it? Or, should I draw it strictly in the computer? Should I shade the drawing I scan in? Or should I just leave it sort of blank without any shading? I'm just really trying to get a handle on this coloring thing, and it is becoming quite difficult for me. I just want to know how others go about it, so I might find a way. I just know that my hard-copy works are infinitely more impressive than the ones I draw in the machine.

I also wanted to ask that if color is really nessicary; especially from a job perspective. Will they just want the critter, or does it have to be a critter in color?
