Hi all, my first post here, I'm looking for any feedback, would be appreciated.
This is my second almost pure digital painting, treating it almost as regular painting, so I'm using it as an exercise to refine my skills - although I have been using photoshop for a number of years, just not as a painting tool.
Alright, this is the initial 2 second 3cm sketch scanned in and the subsequent block in of color after a few stretch and skews:

Roughed in colors for the ear, although I'm not happy with the proportions so I will alter it...

Altered and refined to a reasonable level - I'll leave the fine fine details when I upres to my final resolution for print...

This is where I start to get real wierd...the ultimate halloween house, quick sketch on separate layer to determine composition.

Thanks mate, no no, the smoke is on a separate layer - I just turned it off so that I can concentrate on the rest of the image.
I have a problem with instant gratification see - I block block block...and then I gotta do a little bit here and there that looks finished so I can sit back and go "teehee...I can still paint...somewhat... :yayca:"

Looks like you're headed in the right direction! Can't wait to see it finished. You should make a whole landscape of head houses in the BG. Like a city.

Thanks for the responses thus far - I've added more experimentation, threw in some steam pipes in the eyes - I'm sitting on the fence with them, dunno if I want to keep them just yet - thoughts?
The reason I did that was because after compositing the sketch and turning on all layers, the smoke and the attic window were competing for attention.

Someone said that the pipes look more like incense (sp?) sticks...that totally blew me because, f*ck...this is starting to look more and more like a statement piece on organised religions...*mischievous grin...*...so I am going to head off in that direction, already the mouth alludes to blind belief. And to be honest, its started to really reflect my thoughts on organised beliefs in general - maybe my subliminal thoughts are taking over?!?!?@2221 Heh.
To any religious people out there, this isn't a bomb on any religion in particular, so don't go declaring jihad or its bretheren on me or anything. I think this embedding of sublime messages is something I want to delve into a bit more, I used to study classical master works for a while and they were really intriguing in how cleverly they did it.
As such, I've taken away the house head concept and will be replacing it with something more appropriate to the subject matter =)
I'm going to do a few studies and then throw down a few deisign ideas too before I recommence on the piece.
Here is another screenshot of the front teeth and a new stairwell leading into the subconsciousness of the Kroenen's head.

Thanks for the comments guys.
Alright, now for the centrepiece, hmm, lets have a look, we need a messiah or a chosen one, lets see...a carpenter?! No...thats been done. A business man? No...thats been done. A computer hacker!? No...thats been done. F*ck it, lets just use a farmer...and lets call him...Don. That sounds kinda crap...lets add to that and call him Doncaster, there, thats wanky enough. Doncaster the Farmer, BRILLIANT! He will save humanity and lead everyone to saviorisms!
The statue of doncaster is cast - 3 minute quick sketch in pencil and copic marker - don't worry about proportion, I'll fix that when I start painting.
Btw, thats not a Halo...that would be too christian.

Import into the main piece to check composition and throw down some super quick 30 second values for the statue.

Quick detailing of the head city, just letting the stylus find composition, not really worried about the designwork, just the tangibility and practice of mood.

Holy hell thats one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Can't wait to see the finished product. I personally prefered the first house design to the second, more castle like look.

Whoa! I'd say you're off to a good start for your first piece. Head City's looking nice so far. I like the style of the roofs and railings.
It's really awesome how you've laid everything out from start to finish (or at least start to however far you've gotten.) I love being able to look at the evolution of such incredible art.

Now this I really like. It looks awesome.
I´m not so fond of the stairway on his cheek though. Maybe remove the teeth shown in the hole and put the stairs there instead (then the teeth on the front of his face would look as if they act as a door for the guy sitting on his chin).
Even if you leave it the way it is it´s still a kick-ass piece, no question about that. Looking forward to seeing the finnished version :)

wow, this looks awesome. i dig the concept so far and really nine painting style too.
my only crit is that the chin of the guy is competing with the nose compositionally, protruding too much. im not sure you're willing to change that as there is guy fising on his chin!!...:)
anyway this look kickass:D

Rargh! Thanks all, I'm sure this piece won't be finished for a while, see, I keep this as a practice piece that may end up somewhere someday - when i need to practice rendering say, oh, a rooftop or an ear, I'll come back to this and do one, thats why there are bits and pieces of everything everywhere.
This is essentially a massive compiled render practice sheet, by the time its finished you should theoreticaly have one of every natural and man made problem of rendering in there heh.

MM,
Holy hell dude, looks sick! I like that you added a dark bg which adds great contrast to the pic. The orange hue on the skin is something I like as well.It looks like everything is coming together and I personally have no crits except that I hope you keep working on it until its done. :confident
