Blue Submarine no.6 is crazy... awesome animation, insane details etc.

I don't have a clue why nobody mentioned the series around the Gundam universe. Ok, the story is nuttin' but the Mecha-Design rules.

Already said, the animations/books by Masamune Shirow are a must-see.

Cowboy Bebop has the coolest intro ever. period.

Nothing comes even close in terms of color, soundtrack, and pure style.
I think they made only one season. Killing the main guy, kinda put a damper on things. still he could be alive.

Grave of the fireflies is not a Miyazaki film... it IS a Ghibli film though... it is directed by Isao Takahata... who also did Pom Poko (excelent), My neighbors the Yamadas (funny, different style for him, really fun), and Only Yesterday (very very good) those are his Ghibli films anyway, and they are extremely worthy of the Ghibli name.

I also love Neon Genesis Evalgelion, (the series) Cowboy Bebop, POKEMON... ;) i never said it had good animation.. but it's FUNNY, okay! there's another one... FLCL... Fooley Cooley, that i've never seen in english so it's really confusing.. but it's really fun, random stuff. and it has an anime character with lips.

Oh my, oh my the shock of my life... besides almost every anime has characters with lips, thought about girls/women with lipsticks etc... they usually have L I P S...

but quite funny to have usual characters with lips, but ya gotta admit my lips are the best ones :3 <- if you can call it lips...

i really like these:

macross plus: great robot designs.
cowboy bebop movie "knocking on heaven's doors" if you haven't seen you your mission out.
initial d: a car racing animation which is quite good.

btw...don't you guys just hate dubbed animations...you just lose so much more of the animation when they're dubbed.

Akira I feel would be at the top

The Hakkenden is excellent, based off of novel written in feudal Japan

Evangelion is great as well

and of course Ghost In The Shell

and anything by Mayazaki

tedsuo... is that the same one that's also translated as i can still hear the ocean? it's about the guy who goes back and meets his high school friends or something, right? i've seen that one. i think it's good but it doesn't stick in my mind like only yesterday, of course, that's my boyfriends favorite film, so i guess it wouldn't... ;) i really like them all, ghibli just comes out with high quality stuff. the only ghibli film i haven't seen is the one with the fat cat (not the catbus, i know, that's totoro).. oh wait, maybe i have... hahah, i can't remember if i've seen all of it or not?!?! :)

severith.... what i said about lips was very tongue in cheek... have you seen the lips on the girl in FLCL?

ps how come nobody mentioned "speed racer? " hahahah

tyboogie
March 22nd, 2003, 11:49 AM
haha speedracer---

what was the cartoon that Nickelodean showed in the 80's about a boy and his big white dog? it looked like a ghibli style of japanese animation

Alright Mtom!!! i though i was the only one who has seen the hakkenden. werent some of teh stories based on japanese mythology? or the entire series was from a novel/novels?
Id like to find the series on dvd

Hi there japanimation fans :D
Checking throught my library of films, I find such old gems as (personal rating 1-5):
Rai - grottpojken (Rai the caveboy???) 5!
Cobra - assorted episodes, think theres 31 or something around 4.5!
The dagger of kamui - 3.5
Captain Harlock in Arcadia 4.5
Jungle boy keniya 2.5
Galaxy express 999 (8or 9 episodes I think) 4.5
and of course, there was the flicks my sister used to rent...
candy candy
Sandybell
and my brothers old favourite, Starzinger (6x3 episodes or something, I think)

Theres also Tekken, the movie hmmm, 1.5
Ninja Hellspawn - suposedly a follow up on the great Ninja Scroll
Also theres Ghost in the shell Tv-series, about 10 episodes, I think

Also I would like to know - how many GunnM aka Battle Angel Alita are there around?
Also Ive heard that theres Patlabor the movie 3 and 4 available, but havent seen them.

Fletch: Nope, Ocean's a different one which is also not bad, but definitely not as memorable as the rest. Whisper of the Heart is, in fact, the one with the fat cat. :) I don't think it was ever released over here. Right now they're making a wierd half-sequel to it which has almost nothing to do with the original, but still looks interesting.

Tyboogie:

The Hakkenden was based on a serial novel written by Kyokutei Bakin back around the early 1800's. It is set in a historically sound feudal Japan, but Bakin added his own twists of lore and mystism to it. Each Ronin are linked to a bead which has actual traditional Confucian virtues( Brotherly Affection, Filial Piety, Faith, Loyalty, Wisdom, Proper Form, Duty, Sympathy) Linked to them.

Its a great series and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in ancient japan, and samurai.

Johannes:

Theres only one animated Battle Angel/Gunnm, but a ton of manga.

The Ghost in the Shell tv series is called Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex which is 26 episodes long.

There are 2 more Patlabor movies, the fourth isnt finished yet that i know of, but the third is called Patlabor:WXIII

:)

Tedsuo... OOOKAYY... i got it now... :) i've seen parts of it, we had a teacher that would show the scene of her trying to do her homework and she's falling asleep. AND i remember why i haven't seen it! we were going to, but the DVD was messed up :( boo. When i went to japan (only for a week) i saw a series that i really wanted to see more of.. I finally found out what it was, "Future Boy Conan" that might be what you're talking about, tyboogie, because i found out on imdb that it was directed by miyazaki and takahata. (yay!) i had cable off and on when i was a kid, so i can't confirm that, but it makes sense.
oh, and i like macross plus.

tyboogie
March 25th, 2003, 12:01 PM
hey Fletch that future boy conan show looked cool, i saw the intro to it online..

but the show i was thinking of was call belle and sebastion, and i believe it was done in france, and the story took place in france--but it had a simple ghibli feel to it--and it ran on NIck in the 80's--aahhhh good times....
